49ers homers - Alex Smith (1 Viewer)

Alright, here is the deal. I just lost Trent Green, and my QB situation is dire. I have Aaron Brooks as a backup, who is at Baltimore next week and then a bye. Is Alex Smith a legit starter? 288 yds and a TD is pretty good. Do I go with Pennington, Carr, Brunell, or Losman? Brad Johnson? Who would you pick up and do you think Smith will get better each week, or was this just a fluke?

Not a homer, but watched most of the game.

He did look poised, but he was not always accurate. A. Bryant made a couple of nice adjustments to catch balls that would have normally been incomplete. Smith did suffer from a few drops, most notably a costly one by Vernon Davis late in the game that stalled a drive.

OT. I'm already sick of Vernon Davis & his attitude. They showed him presumably going to the locker room in the first half, taunting the crowd, even though SF was getting beat at the time. He did have a nice TD reception, but he also had cruciall drops. He needs to act like a rookie, shut up, and make his statement on the field.

Anyone know if this guy is represented by Rosenhaus?

I think Smith will have an OK (but up and down) year, but I think the real sleeper may be whatever QB plays against Arizona or Tennessee each week.

No way is he an every week starter right now.

This was the Arizona Cardinals he was playing.

While his performance might surprise those who thought the #1 overall pick would not show any progression from last year  , I would consider Smith--at best--a QB2 this year.

I am in the same boat in one league - I lost Green and my only backup is Kitna. For some reason, I don't have good feelings about that. The only decent looking QBs on the WW were Frye, A Smith, Losman, and Grossman. I picked up Smith today. I need to someone to tell me I will be okay. :(

I like Fry. Looks like he may get some rushing TDs. Had 40 yds rushing. Better coach, Winslow, and Edwards. But check the schedule and see who has the good matchups when Kitna has a tough matchup.

good post about Cleveland, but they have a killer schedule, while Kitna's is pretty soft . . . same for Smith . . .

Similar situation, but I have the Smithless Delhomme and Kitna at backup who faces Chicago D in week 2. I elected to take Alex Smith. I like that Gore has emerged as a nice outlet, Bryant looks good and the schedule is soft, especially looking down the road at week 16 when SF faces AZ. I also picked up Romo off of waivers for later if Carolina continues to struggle on offensive.

You will be okay. I too have Kitna and I am benching him in favor of Smith. I am trying to work a trade to get to Rivers before the weekend because I like his match-up at home against the Titans. If the deal can not get done before then, Mr. Smith is my guy. I'll take Smith against the Rams D at home  instead of Kitna vs. the Bears D on the road. :X

The rams D played very well last week vs a good bronco Offense. Plus with Jonas and Allen (even though Allen was out pretty much the whole game vs the cards) out this weekend. Kind of makes me worried.

If the rams D plays the same as they did last week, we will find out if Alex is the real deal or not.

Local- Smith will go as far as Norv Turner takes him. He could even start to scramble a bit as they are frequently rolling him out of the pocket. Additionally, they have two good TE's that really should help his development. Personally, I would look at Carr and Johnson based upon match ups, but Smith should also be tossing a lot due to playing from behind as the 49ers secondary remains suspect.

I have Brooks and Simms, and Young, so I am in the same boat. You are lucky so many QB's are available to you!

do yourself a favor and pickup Rex Grossman instead

sure, Smith is gonna have some good performances as he did this past Sunday, but he's also gonna struggle as well, especially on the road IMO

Seriously though, it would depend on your league's scoring

if you are penalized for incomplete passes then i would say no, because he tended to throw alot of balls away or throw them at his receiver's feet when in trouble or pressured

Smith is much better than last year. Not top 10 or even top 15, but close.
He definately looked poised in the pocket and alot more confident, but with the injuries to Larry Allen and Jonas Jennings, I'm not sure if he'd be a good play this week. I really can't say how much of his success last week was simply based on the fact that Arizona could not generate any type of consistent pass rush

Smiths hands are too small, the ball squirts out too easy and someof his throws drift.
Link? Serious question, as I hadn't heard this.I hadn't really taken a look at Alex Smith up until last week when I drafted him late over Losman. This week he's a viable option to start ahead of Delhomme and Brunell. Never thought I'd be saying that in Week Two.

Where did he play last week?
Arizona hardly classifies as a hostile road environment
Nice stadium though, AZ!
seriously, the people out here were more happy about having a climate controlled stadium than they were adamant about cheering against the Niners or for the Cardinals

I'm another guy who (evidently) took the QBBC approach. I've got Green, Brunell and Smith. Brunell's getting the start, but I'm definitely monitoring Smith closely and like that he seems to have improved since last year. I knew I was playing matchups at QB this year anyway, I was just hoping that I would do it with Trent Green in the mix too. :sadbanana:

Its' the Zone, bro! Few are hard core about football like other teams. It's a novelty right now and soon, you'll be able to get tickets like before but in "a climate controlled stadium ".

For this week I would go with Carr assuming Houston will fall behind to Indy like they always do.Long term I think that you would be better off making a trade for a player that is a good buy low candidate right now, like Jake Plummer. If you have an overall solid team and want something around a 200 yard 1 td performance every week, I would say Brad Johnson. All this guy does is win. And if Williamson starts hanging on to balls....

what a joke!just last year no one out here would even think of admitting to being a Cardinals fan, now everywhere you go you see tons of brand new Matt Leinart and Edgerrin James jerseys!

talking to these people is the funniest part, they try extra hard to convince you that they've been a hardcore Cardinals fan their whole life, but just now decided to buy season tickets

other say they moved out here from another state a few years ago, but just this season decided to change their allegiances over to the Cardinals.

All of them really believe the Cardinals are gonna win the NFC West too and possibly go to the superbowl

quite hilarious talking sports out here :lmao:

They will be able to in 2008!!

I have the exact same trifecta of QBs, and I didn't think twice about starting Smith at home over Brunell at Dallas this week. I can't tell you how impressed I was watching Smith last week. I was wondering who was wearing his uniform -- that's how night and day his performace was compared to last season. He was poised, confident, and light on his feet. The same QB we remembered seeing at Utah. It looks as though the game has slowed down for him in a BIG way.

Everyone overreacted to Smith's performance last year as a 21 year old rookie, I'd caution against doing the same based on 1 game this year. He's a very talented QB who finally has a little bit of blocking and a decent running game, but he's still incredibly young. If you are counting on him as a fantasy starter this year, I'd be more than a little concerned.

more of a bye week filler...

I attribute Smith's improvement this season to his intelligence. He is too smart to not get the NFL game. He struggled because of the transition from a spread offense to a west coast hybrid. He has physical tools and supporting cast to succeed. I wouldn't use him as a starter, but he would be adequate in favorable matchups.

Most importantly to Fantasy GMs, is Smith's play has made Bryant, Gore and Davis legitimate options. He will play well enough to be conducive to good production for those guys.

Vince Young is on waivers in my dynasty league....do I cut Burner Turner or Alex Smith and scoop Vince or Keep Smith.....?

You'd be absolutely nuts to cut Turner. I'd rather have Smith than Young, as Smith is a lot closer to being a credible QB.

Guys question here... in a dynasty league and I picked up A Brooks who I thought might turn it around this season (doesn't look good after one week). I also have Warner who is AT Seattle this week. Would you go with Smith at home against the Rams OR go with a tough matchup and Warner?

THANKS!

This is really an ACF question, but I'd go with Warner despite the matchup.

Brunell has put up good numbers against the Dallas defense, not great but good. Isn't the Rams defense pretty good against the pass?
