4th of July parade shooting in Chicago suburb (1 Viewer)

Pretty ironic that the latest mass shooting comes on a day we're celebrating "freedom."

Condolences to the families affected.

When will we do something?

Suspected shooter is in their late teens (18-20 yrs old)...seems to be the norm for mass shootings.

What I don't get is, they havent been alive long enough to be mad at the world to the point of committing these kinds of acts, yet it keeps happening.

It's a mad world.

This isn't Chicago. It's 30 miles away and has virtually no crime.
Yeah, Highland Park is a classic north shore, wealthy suburb …truly one of the last places in the Chicagoland region where you’d expect an incident like this.  Just mind boggling and demoralizing.

I hope it won't end up being anti-Semitic, given the large Jewish population in that town.  Or I guess it doesn't matter whether it is or not.  Awful.  Sorry, I'm not making sense.

The teen mind is prone to extreme thoughts to begin with. The troubled teen mind can be particularly volatile, even over things that may not make any sense to adults.

It makes sense …it’s a tragedy, for sure.  Adding an anti-Semitic element just adds more complexity and another set of emotions.

A psychiatrist friend of mine posted on FB about an associate of his who has some knowledge of the family and shooter.  The shooter is described as being “off.”  Hardly technical, but some indication of a young man who probably had no business having access to a high-powered rifle.

Interesting.  I sort of take a different perspective.  Problems that a more experienced/mature adult may be able to shrug off can be significantly magnified by the mind of a younger person.   A pimple can mean the end of the world to an adolescent.  Younger folks also may not have developed the coping mechanisms yet to deal with life's issues.

Given Highland Park‘s demographics, I had the same thought.  It’s evil no matter what, but it’s still sad that this thought comes to mind right?

Yep.  Ditto.  Had at least 5 friends and their families at the parade.  Thankfully all ok.  One friend’s SIL got shot in the ankle.   She’s fine (mostly).

So glad to hear that.  Didn't figure you'd be there, but figured you might have folks who were.  I'm glad everyone is OK.  I haven't heard from everyone on my list yet, but the two remaining are those I'd think least likely to be there.  Only one person I've been in touch with was actually at the parade with her family, and they are all OK.

Hope you hear back and get good news soon. Still waiting on a few others as well, but odds are low that anyone else we know was there.  The whole thing makes me feel ill.   We were in Wisconsin all weekend, nowhere near thankfully.

First the religion angle, now this? Fox was covering it all day without even talking about anything else.
Turned to see their spin on it. Sat through two complete segments on unrelated things that spanned 20 minutes with no mention of it. Not even words on the screen mentioning it.

My son had a couple of friends at/in the parade, but they’re OK.  I’m so sick of these shootings.
Glad they are ok tri.   What’s really sad is that while the specifics are atypical for Chicago (parade, wealthy suburb) this outcome isn’t abnormal for a Chicago summer weekend.  So many things wrong……

They're doing pre-recorded Independence Day stuff for prime time. I'm sure they would cut in if anything developed but should they keep going if no new news is coming out?

Not retracting your religion comment?

Not yet, no. There was tons of stuff on Twitter about it - not exactly the best source, I admit.

As usual:

this kid has been screaming from the rooftops about this well in advance but as usual we totally missed it:  Weird how we fail to focus on this stuff... still

1.  What do you suggest we do about disturbing posts and feeds?

2.  What is the "cutoff" for when we take action, and what is that action?

3.  Should we really be linking and clicking on these things to begin with? - fame is increasingly a motivation for some of these people.   I know I am always torn about wanting to be informed, and giving them the exact thing they want.    I like the book's idea of treating them like other types of crimes - don't say their name, post terrible pics of them, and focus more on the survivors and people who caught him.

Thanks for posting the link. How didn’t anyone around him pickup on this
Who's to say they didn't?

Hypothetically speaking, let's say this guy lived in your neighborhood and you became aware of this video, maybe even knew him to be a bit "weird".  What do you do about it?  Serious question.  Even if we suspect someone is capable of doing something drastic what can you do?  Arrest him on the possibility of what he might do?  Force him into some sort of therapy (perhaps against his will)?  Trample on his rights to privacy with a pre-emptive search warrant based on him being weird?

I know that it's not the PSF and many you purposely don't go over there.

All I will say is that one of the best reads I've had in awhile is THIS BOOK.    They studied these types of shooters, talk about their common traits, and talk about solutions they would try out to help prevent more.    Can't recommend the book enough for the info in it.

This is the rub.   More times than not when I am reading it seems that somewhere in the process something couldn't be done for a variety of reasons even if people think they needed to be looked at more - can't hold them long enough at the hospital, can't do anything because they haven't committed a crime, can't force them into more therapy,  etc..

I don’t think there is much you can do here, which is why we should have even slightly tougher gun laws, but this country is insane about their guns and would rather have these shootings than any rudimentary laws so here we are. Sucks.
