6 - 1 x 0 + 2 ÷ 2 = ? (1 Viewer)

So the rule is to assume parenthesis even if there aren't parenthesis? I didn't realize this. (Or at least if I learned it in math I've forgotten it.) I would have gotten that wrong.

If there are no parenthesis then you do order of operations which means multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction.

OK- so why do we have an order of operations rule? I get that we have one but what's the logic of it? Wouldn't it be far simpler to go from left to right unless there were parenthesis?

Working left to right.

Or we could just get jon_mx in here to get the answer wrong three times, stumble upon the right answer and tell everyone why he's the best at math.

Aside from destroying the commutative property and all proofs that depend on it, sure.
