6 Top 5 Country Music Hits in the Last 3 Years Are the Same Damn Song (1 Viewer)

You Know Exactly What These 6 Country Songs Have In CommonMaybe you've noticed that many hit country songs sound the same. Nashville songwriter Greg Todd heard similar melodies, music beds and solos in six "bro country" songs — by Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Parmalee, Cole Swindell and Chase Rice — and mashed them up with some pitch- and tempo-shifting.

"It was only when I started really listening to the lyrics that six out of the six songs talked about moonlight or the sun going down or the sunset," Todd tells NPR's Melissa Block. "All six had to do with picking up a girl who wasn't yet their girlfriend or the love of their life or something like that. It was just a summer thing. And almost all of them had a girl that was either in the truck or was going to be in the truck at some point during the song if all went accordingly."

As a songwriter, Todd says it's hard to break past the gatekeepers of popular country music. But he's considering writing a "seventh song that fits right into this mold. At the very least, they can't tell me it doesn't sound like a hit."

I know a lot of people don't like country music and based on my listening preferences I actually might be one of them though I guess I have listened to my share in one form or another....

...but whether you are a country music fan or a plain music fan or just are a cynic and cannot believe how much mierda is out there on the air waves you have got to check this out.

This is a FORMULA: these six songs have done the following:

No. 1 hit song 2012

No. 1 hit song 2013

No. 1 hit song 2014

No. 1 hit song 2014 (second one)

Top 5 climbing with a bullet 2014

Top 20 climbing with a bullet 2014

Note at one point three guitar solos are playing over each other and they are exactly the same. At another point (2:44) all six songs overplay each other perfectly.

I don't think this is just a country music thing, I think this is going on all over the place, though to his credit and because of his profession this guy took the time to prove it.

I've loathed country music for as long as I can remember.

The truth is though, the country fans don't care. They probably actually like that all of the songs are the same.

I like country music but hate country song writers because they write for the least common denominator. Its infuriating that these ### bags are successful while good country musicians founder.

Drink in my hand (eric church) - give me that wink (Neal McCoy)

So on and so forth.

I saw Luke Bryan live about 5 years ago. One of my wife's friends worked for a huge country station and had a bunch of tickets. She invited all of her friends to go as part of her birthday party. So I pretty much had to go.

Oof. Every single one of his songs sounded like what the guy described above. I think I heard the word "truck" 15 times that night.

Most of the "fans" of these songs shop exclusively at wal-mart. So there ya go.
The average household income of a country music fan is $75K annually, which puts most of them in the Kohl's and Target demographic. But feel free to keep on spouting your ignorant stereotypes.

Sorry if I touched a nerve.

And if you think that's "country" music feel free to keep spouting stupidity.

 I don't even like that music.

Contrast this with pop music which has probably had at least 6 top hits by Taylor Swift during that time period about the dude who did her wrong. But we know it is all about the bass.

I don't consider this country music. It's reaaly just a sub genre of the same over-produced pop music that's on the top 40 charts.
Exactly. That's why when I listen to country, I listen to REAL country like George Jones, Johnny Cash, Freddie Fender and Conway Twitty.

If you want some country to listen to, check out Brett Detar's website. Free downloads.

My first thought was that all music that gets played on the radio has become so cookie cutter that you could do this with any genre.

That's not real country music. It's country-pop music.

You wouldn't ever catch Waylon, Merle and Johnny writing the same song.

I've been thinking about this a bit latley... I pretty much loathe country music too, but concained Waylon Jennings is one of my all time favorite artists. I love that old school outlaw country stuff and I consider that to be more "rock" than "country".

Surely we've all had enough tailgates and mason jars and front porches for a while.

Bro-Country. pfffft.

Gonna see Ricky Skaggs later this month. Little bluegrass/country cross pollination.

That's pretty much how it goes with all mainstream pop stuff. Find a formula and hammer it into the ground until there's a new formula. Only difference is the formulas.

Yeah this is ONLY a country music phenomena...

and am I the only one who thought that was a whole lot better than any of the songs individually?

Yeah.. Pretty much. Can do this for just about any genre as others have said. If it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality.

Saw FGL in Dayton, OH over the weekend with the wife. Was an interesting mix of rednecks, college kids hitting it way too hard, middle class - middle aged folks, and this old Italian couple dressed to the nines who sat in the wrong seats next to us for a while.

Yep.

Some artists are willing to take a chance but even if they do get picked up others will soon copy the style.
