I wonder with WW2 being less than 30 years old at that point if that played a role in the critics judgement. Sill too much resentment towards Japan.

It was also a different type of film, the way they simply told the historical events without focusing on two main characters. 1970 is also the year MASH, Patton, and Love Story came out.

Critics hated this movie...

Every person I know who actually saw it hates this movie..

But I always have to watch... Death to Smoochy.  This has it all; ice skating, a punch-drunk boxer, Nazis, a little person, the Irish mob, phallic pastry just for starters.  All in the guise of children's entertainment
