WHICH IS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BED?

Got into an argument about this recently with my GF.

Option 1:
You walk into the bedroom. You are standing at the end of the bed where your feet would be, looking at the head board. Is this the LEFT side of the bed on your left as you stand at the end and center of the bed?

Option 2:
You are lying on your back in bed, with the back of your head on the pillow, looking at the ceiling. The pillow is close to the head board. You extend your left arm out and it hangs out, over the edge of the side of the bed. This is the opposite side of Option 1.

WHICH IS THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BED?

I think you're intimate enough with your bedding to make it a this side/that side sort of thing. Like you point to it and go "this side" or "that side."

Otherwise, I say it's when you're standing at the end of the bed where your feet would be and looking at the head board.

Option 2 agrees with adjustable bed controls that I've seen. Don't know if all brands are the same but I'll stick with 2.

The correct answer is Option 2. Think of the bed as a stage. If you're on a stage, stage left and stage right are determined from the perspective of the performer on stage looking at the audience, not from the audience’s point of view.

But seriously Option 2 is the answer. You spend 99% of your time laying in the bed, not standing at the foot looking at it. Thus the left side is the side that is in your left side while laying on your back.
Agreed

How is the left and right side of a vehicle determined? From the sitting behind the steering wheel POV.
Driver and passenger sides of course. Does anyone say left or right?

How is left and right field determined in baseball? Standing at home and looking out over the field.
Hockey, Soccer, Football? Standing at the end looking up the field,
Same works for the bed, standing at the end looking at it.

Exactly. Stage left is left.

what side is it if you lay on your stomach to sleep?

so what you're saying here is you like to perform in front of others....

Mechanics and repair shops.
Wrong... Mechanics and repair shops INVENTED the "driver's side" and "passenger's side" because people are dumb.

I remember asking a customer, "driver's side or passenger's side" and she repeated over and over again and louder each time, "RIDER'S SIDE!!!".. wtf??

Driver and passenger takes the guess work out of LEFT or RIGHT..

In order to not sound like a noob, I always say passenger side/driver side when talking to a mechanic. I like to think it somehow saves me money on my bill, but probably not.

Hmmm... standing at home plate is also the beginning, and the beginning of the bed is the head (if, by your logic, the foot of the bed is the end). Option 2 is still correct.

bad logic here. You walk into the bedroom, and 99 times out of 100, you'll be at the end of the bed first. That's the beginning, or home plate as eloquently stated before.

Do you place the foot of your bed nearest the headboard or wall of your room? Much like the outfield wall being the "top" end of the field, the headboard is as well. You start at home, or at the foot of the bed.

Option 1 is still correct.

What if my bed has no headboard and floats in the middle of the room?
As you are a footballguy I would expect nothing less.
But which side is the left side??
STRONG SIDE!!!!

I would ask about the pillow placement but you'll tell me that you have your pillows in the middle of the bed :lmao:

(FYI, pillows would be the side that normally gets the wall or headboard, so in essence nothing has changed. Left side is the side on your left, while facing the bed from the foot of it, or the opposite side of the pillows)

Where are one's eyes, or one's brain? In their head, right. So directional POVs come from one's head. Where does one place their head when they sleep? At the foot of the bed, or at the headboard? Option 2 is still correct.

And when you lie down on your stomach, with your head at the headboard (obviously), the left side is still the left side making option 1 correct.

And all of this is why, when asking a gf what side of the bed she likes to sleep on, its prefaced with "while standing at the foot of the bed facing it...."

Which also happens to be the correct way, and Option 1.

We just had this discussion since we put an older sleepnumber bed in the guestroom. Needed to designate sides on the remote. After my failed attempt to convince her to use port and starboard, we ended up with window and door as the identifier for the respective sides. Only one that we agreed was idiot-proof for guests.

Bad logic is not following the design of the equipment. Where your head is at determines what is left and right.
By this logic the first place i usually see my car is at the bonnet/hood, so left would be, in your case, the passenger side.
But logically using the vehicle, in your case, you drive on the left side.
What is the left side of the car?
