A new annoying analyst phrase (1 Viewer)

Hat on a hat is not an analyst term. It's used by coaches at any level. More coaches are in the analyst ranks, hence you hear it more now than when Howard Cosell was an announcer.

I remember my Pee Wee coach talking about "hat on a hat". Just because someone says it on TV and it's the first time you've heard it doesn't mean it's a new analyst term.

"Sugar huddle" is one that has always annoyed me, although thankfully we don't hear it as much as we used to.

Didn't that start with Boomer and the Bengals?

WTH is a sugar huddle anyway? Are they trying to sweeten the play-call or what?

I know that we're talking phrases here, but the most annoying thing from any analyst in my opinion is Troy Aikman's unnecessary addition of the word "what" in almost every sentence.

"He can read defenses better than what he used to."

"Brett Favre has less arm strength than what he once had."

It drives me nuts. Bet it would make a great drinking game though.

"Drive" is the most over-used word in football. Really, the team just had a 50 yard drive? I must've missed the cars on the field.

"Illegal". They say it all the time - "illegal contact", "illegal man downfield", I mean seriously, what laws have been broken? :goodposting:

You guys have obviously overlooked the most TRITE phrase of 2008 and 2009 and I am honestly disappointed in you all! :(

Actually, I want to apologize for saying that. Didn't mean to "throw you under the bus". ;)

"Having said that".

You can make any statement, then totally discredit it. Now, I've got to get back to watch the game. Having said that, Gruden on MNF makes it unlistenable.

I hope when you wind up in hell you find yourself shackled at the ankles to a demonic kornheiser.

also annoying when people take lines off of sitcoms and pawn them off as their own.

Just heard Jaws say this one... and Greg Gumbel does it all the time, as do many other guys.

"We asked [insert coach here] about [insert player here], and what did he tell us?"

I have no idea what the coach told you. I wasn't there. How 'bout you simply TELL us what the coach told you?

Phil Simms is to thank for this one. It started with him years ago.

And when did I claim to have invented this phrase?????
