Footballguy
This is all about my fantasy team, but it's a serious question I've had for a number of years as well.
In our league, the only way you can replace a guy is when he goes on NFL IR. So when someone on your team is seriously hurt, you hope they eventually get placed on IR so you can replace him.
Two of my players got hurt at points this season, but never made it to IR.
One was Matt Schaub. The Texans were convinced he was going to come back at some point, which is fine. But when you become eliminated from the playoff race, I think sometimes you are better off not playing a guy who is your future and risk him getting further injured.
The other was Willis McGahee. The Ravens said all week he wouldn't play. There was no reason not to IR him as far as I could tell.
So why would a team not IR a player and create a roster spot?
