QB Aaron Rodgers just won the NFL MVP award, as voted by the Associated Press. The award was given in Indianapolis as part of the "NFL Honors" awards show, which is airing later tonight. Rodgers is the Packers' first league MVP since QB Brett Favre in 1997. Stay tuned to packers.com for more on Rodgers' MVP award. A full story will be posted later tonight.

Sweet. I knew he was going to win it. Link.

"Some pretty remarkable things happened that we were all lucky to be a part of," Brees said, reminiscing about his season. "The older you get the more you appreciate the opportunities and the moments."

Had a great year, but how valuable is he when the backup steps in and does what no other Packer Qb had done before? ;)

Will somebody make sense of Rodgers getting MVP and Brees slam dunking the Offensive MVP (43 votes to 7).

The NFL writers are ####### idiots.

Brees should have won this award hands down. And I'm unbiased with no dog in the discussion.

Hands down?I thought it may be closer...and both had outstanding years.
I don't deny that Brees, Rodgers, and Brady all had outstanding years. But Brees seemed heads and shoulders over the other two this year.
How so?Because he threw for more yards?
Seriously, Brees was not "Head and Shoulders" above Rodgers unless you're simply talking about shampoo.

No way. Rodgers had more total touchdowns, less turnovers, nearly a full yard higher YPA, had the highest passer rating in the history of the NFL, and led a team with statistically the worst defense in the league to a 15-1 record. Brees was awesome this year as well, but Rodgers was just a little better.

Remind me of the name of the award again? Brees was clearly more valuable to the Saints than Rodgers was to the Packers IMO

Rodgers earned 48 votes to two for New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees in balloting by a nationwide panel of 50 media members who regularly cover the NFL. The Packers star is the first Green Bay player honored since Brett Favre concluded a run of three straight seasons as MVP in 1997.

I don't understand how Brees got two votes, but Rogers DA man

Pride of my alma mater, Pleasant Valley High in Chico CA. Salute!

(Likely to be re-named Aaron Rodgers High in due time)

Pretty clear the voters were looking to spread the wealth and give an award to both deserving guys. These things just become paperweights or get sold on ebay in 20 years anyway, and players know what they did with or without the hardware. Little reason for a lot of angst and debate over it.

A fair few clams at 6/1 at the start of the season. At least this Niner fan got something out of 2011 - Plus half that on Von Miller.

Not Arian Foster for the rushing title at 50/1 like last year, but free money as far as I'm concerned. Both of them were put in, take out.

Thanks Bet365.

Exactly.
Clearly, as reflected in the voting.
Clearly proven wrong during the last game of the season.
Clearly Jay Cutler was just behind Peyton Manning then. Rodgers was an out-and-out gun this season. Flynn may be one of the next stars in the league, so to discount Rodgers' season because of one great game is simply ludicrous. The kid is a FREAK.

I think a lot of people's argument, mine included, is that the nfl is basically just giving the same award twice. Rodgers had a great season, but I am not convinced he is the most VALUABLE player to his team. Foster would be more fitting for that, imo.

Tim Tebow should have won, took his team just as far in the playoffs too. Flynn shows it's the system.
So the Packers have figured out this miracle system that teams like Browns haven't, and any 11 dorks could go out there and put up 42 points with it. Cool.Guess what? All teams have good systems that, if executed perfectly, results in a TD on every drive.Maybe, just maybe, the players actually have something to do with it.

Personally, I think Brady and Stafford both gaining 5000+ yards this year took away Brees's record, and lessened the effect a bit in the voting.

Rodgers had a helluva year, and would have had even greater #'s if he had played that last game against Detroit. He could have tied or beaten Brady's

TD record in a season if he had. So keep that in mind.

And sorry, but TDs are far >>>>>> yards

It's the NFL MVP, not a team MVP.

And let's not forget that the QB Rating takes into account ALL of the important QB categories, not just passing yards.

What is your point? Most valuable in the league must first be most valuable to their team. So if I think players like foster are more valuable to their team, they should get the vote over Rodgers. Not that hard to understand. I think Rodgers should have been offensive POY but somebody else should be mvp.

The same, I thought both had about the exact same season. Rodgers had more wins, Brees set the all time passing record for yards, Brees more games played in. From the eyeball, I think Rodgers is the better player. However, I am surprised at the lopsided vote.

Makes you wonder how Rodgers would perform with the Saints receiving corps and how Brees would perform with the Packers receiving corps.

Or if either could get along with Satan Holmes.
I don't think Holmes would pout about either of those guys slinging him the ball... but you never know I guess.
You're right. It was just an easy excuse for me to take a cheap shot at the guy so I took it. :D

i like how he called out the Giants for playing injured during their playoff game to slow down fast tempo offense. May be true but made him look like bad...

Would Denver had made the playoffs without Tim Tebow? Would Green Bay make the playoffs without Aaron Rodgers? That's not fishing, that's just making for spirited debate.
