PERSONNEL MATTERS

Wide receiver Adrian Arrington said he will be active for Sunday’s game, indicating his long-awaited NFL debut is just around the corner. He has not been active for a regular-season game since joining the Saints as a seventh-round draft pick in 2008.

With Pierre Thomas likely out, Payton might turn to Arrington to handle kick returns against the Buccaneers. Wide receivers Devery Henderson and Roibert Meachem are two other possible options.

Arrington was promoted to the 53-man roster Wednesday from the practice squad when team officials placed kick returner Courtney Roby (concussion) on season-ending injured reserve.

It is Arrington’s second stint on the 53-man roster this season. He spent the first three weeks on the main roster coming out of training camp and the last 12 weeks on the practice squad.

The University of Michigan product said he recently rejected opportunities to join the 53-man rosters of the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Rams.

“Coach Payton called me in and reminded me of all the things I’ve been through with them and the trust that they’ve shown in me by keeping me around through all the injuries and what not,’’ Arrington said Saturday. “Obviously, that shows they want me to be here and be involved on this team and in this offense.

“I love all the guys here. I love all the things they do here. I mean, being a wide receiver, what better place is there to be than here. I know that once I get that chance, Drew (Brees) spreads the ball all over, so I’d get an opportunity to make plays.’’

Arrington said Payton offered him no assurances of being signed to the 53-man roster when the opportunities arose with St. Louis and Minnesota.

“There were no promises,’’ Arrington said. “He said you never know what can happen from week to week. Just hang, and, sure enough, six weeks later, I’ve got an opportunity.’’
He is not blazing fast, sort of like another Colston a big possession type WR, about the same build and similar strengths. Dude hasnt been able to stay healthy though (Colston like also) He was leading all the Saints WR's in the pre-season and many Saints fans thought he would make the team over Roby but Arrington just wasnt as strong on special teams.http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2010/...ing_his_ca.html

Since the season has started he has been offered a spot on the Vikings and Rams active 53 man rosters but rejected those to stay on with the Saints practice squad knowing his opportunity was just around the corner. That opportunity is now. He wears number 87 which is Joe Horns old number and this is his 3rd year with the team so he knows the system. We'll see Sunday if he takes advantage as Tampa Bay probably has no tape on this guy.

Adrian Arrington!

As I wrote in the Colston thread...

The AA hype from Bushisdaman...that guy is a possession WR last time I checked. I wouldn't say he could easily fill Colston's shoes.

In dynasty he is available everywhere and I don't think most are seeing what you are. I will say though the knees for Colston are going to be his undoing...DJax(Seattle) in the making perhaps. Career over by 28.

I had liked AA when he left the big house, even held on to him much longer than most. But at this point anything he does will be a complete surprise.

He isn't Colston and he will probably be used sparingly or mostly second half if the Saints do score board watch and pull starters. Still I think he has some tools not the least of which is his hands and the Saints WR's have been driving me crazy with the drops lately. Dont forget he has the kind of QB in Brees that can make a WR much better than he actually is. He will not be double teamed or draw the top cover corner either so he could take one to the house if he gets a look. I like the kid and I hope he does well. Gotta commend a guy for choosing to stay with his team and not leaving for the money. As far as Dynasty goes yeah I can see that with so many talented WR's on the Saints roster he would fly way under the radar. Some of those WR's are Free agents next year like Lance Moore and Courtney Roby so there are no certainties what will happen beyond this season in the Saints WR group. However that said, I bet Henderson will be the odd man out next season. He has had a very lack luster year IMO.As for Colston, I have concerns but this knee scope is a simple procedure. Hopefully no more major work coming in the near future.

7 receptions for 79 yards and was targeted the most of the Saints WR's today and didnt drop a single pass that came his way. He also got some looks in the red zone although that did not materialize into anything. It was pretty much a glorified preseason game today but still put it on your radar for down the road in Dynasty.

I like what I saw today. Nice size and great hands. I added him in my dynasty league.

If Moore leave as a FA, Henderson is cut and knee problems continue to bother Colston, I can see a scenario where Arrington becomes fantasy relevant next year. He could be the possession guy along with Graham, while Meachem is used as the deep threat. Those are a lot of ifs, but it could happen.

He'll be pretty relevant next year. He's way too good to stay off the field. Once our WRs get shaken up in the offseason, AA will step up.

Kicked Malcolm Kelly to the curb for this guy.

ETA: thanks for the thread.

He's been their best WR the last two preseasons IMO, if not statistically, and not to call him "another Colston" but he seemed like a great find in the 7th round as Colston was. You called it a glorified preseason performance and....yep here we go again, preseason stud does well again. He was cut and signed to the practice squad and re-signed this year. Hurt last season and IIRC some this season (injury mentioned in OP). Payton clearly thinks he belongs on the outer edge of the roster.I've emailed people the last couple years and (have Arrington in just about every dynasty league with a decent sized roster) and he is not a dedicated individual. He will show up and work hard in the offseason, but it won't be a regular occurrence like coaches like to see from players. He never stays late or comes in early and.....he's mr. bare minimum. For him, I would watch what Saints writers say about guys working out during the offseason. If you don't read or hear his name, Payton may have had it with him. If you do, then I can see the Saints sorta promoting him. He's already done well (in preseason but..) against first stringers and clearly has the ability to do OK.After following him for two years and drooling at the idea of Brees throwing to him....I gotta say I figure he gets cut and then 'gets it' and does OK for another team.

I think Payton made it pretty clear he was in their long term plans by persuading the kid to remember what he has been through with the team and even in spite of injuries they have kept him around. Coach doesnt go to that trouble for players who are not going to contribute one day. I think he makes the active 53 next season and contributes as the #4 WR but he could move to #3 depending on who is still around.

No comprende.

Sorry but this seems like you are ignoring that they cut him

Doesn't matter if they smeared peanut butter on his nads and threw him in a field of crows. Point is that he's still on the team, and will be in the mix.

stop me if you heard this before: he's been a great player in the preseason games but that's about it.

it was nice to see him in a regular season game (and productive at that) but i wouldn't hold my breath. a lot would have to break his way for him to be fantasy relevant next year.
