AFC Championship - Patriots Hold Off Jags (1 Viewer)

The Gronk hit was absolutely the right call. Helmet to helmet. Easy call.

The PI was absolutely atrocious.

Taking a knee there made me puke. Playing not to lose. Why not give Grant another dump off and go from there? Pats have had no answer for that play.

meh..looked like PI to me. I'm no Pats fan either
If you can't close out a sideline on a deep route the don't even bother playing cb. That was textbook sideline coverage against a deep ball. Bouye had position and closed out. Perfect coverage negated by situational officiating.

Even the halftime crew callig it out

That was not a malicious hit... Anybody who has played football knows you lean into the hit to help absorb it... It was a penalty but not malicious.
Its helmet to helmet clearly. Whats to stop the hitman mentality when you know you knock the opposing team's star player out?

The delay of game was not legit. Tell me with a straight face the Pats don't get the extra half second every time. That started that collapse.
Yep. It wasn't even whistled dead until after the Jags had picked up the 1st down.

The PF on Gronk was an easy call.

The PI call was iffy, but NE always gets those calls, so I just expect it at this point.

You can't close out by putting two hands on the guy and push him out of bounds.  Its not like he cut him off and was moving him out with his body while looking back at the ball.

Clock was at 0 = delay of game. No matter how many times they have missed it before.
That doesn't matter. Delay of game is called one second after 0.

If the clock hit 0, and another second passed and no snap then it's a delay. That's how it's called.

The delay of game was obvious.  It was a full second.  When it happened real time I said to my son "where is the flag for delay of game?"

And no, I'm not a Pats fan.

The hold was obvious
As was the delay of game along with the hit on Gronk.  I think the reason they called the PI on Bouye was cause Cooks had half a step on him and pushed him from behind/the side.

Didn’t they use to have an option for waiving off PI on an uncatchable ball.

I've always said that if an illegal hit results in an injury, the person who made the hit should be suspended for the average recovery length of that injury. I was sick of Suh knocking out guys for six-eight weeks and getting a one-game suspension. I wanted him gone just as long. I'll always support the Suh rule. I'd love to see it happen.
I don't disagree but, in cases like this, when the play results in a penalty and reviews show clear violation, and the guy you hit is out. You're out too. Only fair. It's not fair otherwise and if you don't do this, it seems to encourage you to knock players out.

3 of those penalties were clear as day. The 4th could be maybe be debated.

It’s so easy to b*tch about the calls.
Yes. Anyone that watches football knows NE gets alot of calls

Looked to me like Bouye pushed him out of bounds with both hands, that's going to get called

Yes, the way he was celebrating I think he wanted to knock him out of the game
Or he was happy that he made a big hit and knocked the ball out of gronk hands...I mean they hit helmet to helmet so was the correct call but he also hit him in the body with his shoulder pads so I think it's a stretch to say he aimed at his head

Except for the helmet-to-helmet part.
Referees should not call a penalty every single time two helmets touch. If a defender is leading with his shoulder, and the impact causes the helmets to hit each other, that should NOT be a penalty.

Not saying that the Gronk hit didn't deserve a penalty, but IMO it was close enough to a legal hit that the NFL wouldn't have fined Church if the refs hadn't called it.

You also can't drop kick a guy out of bounds. But bouye neither shoved or drop kicked. He just covered the route really well

I’ve found myself not caring about football once FF is over. I tried to be up coming in to this game. BS PI call gives NE points. #### like this makes me just not want to watch the NFL anymore.
NFL turning into the NBA.  Gotta stick to the script.

New England has become the Hulk Hogan of football.  Get your hat handed to you early, then through the “magic” of Hulkamania, miraculously come back to win at the end.

and of course, Brady will get his Michael Jordan flu moment because of his “devastating” hand injury.

its like watching the WWE.  WHERE IS RIC FLAIR?  WOOOOOO!

They still do.

I don't get your point.

Yes. But to me, he pushed him out so early...

Purposely leading with the helmet to hit another's helmet can get yourself knocked out just as easy.. Most helmet to helmet are unintended.... think hitting a moving target.

Game is way to fast to be that precise

legit penalty for today’s nfl
Absolutely it was a legit penalty.

But a couple of goobs here think Church, in a couple of microseconds, thought “I’m going to hit Gronk helmet-to-helmet and knock him out of the game”.

Do you think the defender hit Gronk helmet to helmet on purpose?
No. Speed of the game.

Defender might have been chirping after the hit a little...... "Big Tree Fall Hard and all that"......but I don't think it was intentional.

:goodposting: but with the way concussions are handled now and the money the league has already had to payout and may have to payout in the future they are going to err on the side of caution.

Jags dominance is highly reliant on coaches minimizing how bad Blake Bortles is. Also everyone else has to not make mistakes... Jags really need a long drive here.

Surprised so many people think the "script" for the nfl and the refs is to have the hated cheating Pats win all the time.

:lmao:

I’m sorry, you just speared a coworker in the helmet and he got up wobbly and you’re flexing your muscles and whooping to the sky? If not intentional certainly wasn’t too upset about it.
Pretty sure I’d get arrested and/or taken to the psych ward if I put on a football helmet and speared a fellow teacher.

And go back and watch the hit again.  There was no “spearing”.

Tommy Bohannon looked like one of one large rocks slowly going downhill and picking up momentum.
