After the first half of the season... (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
For me, easily, it's the effectiveness of Colt McCoy. He is a flat-out winner.

I thought there was ZERO chance he would succeed in this league. He is running the offense the way it's designed, he's taking care of the football and he doesn't appear to be overwhelmed by his surroundings.

Nice work, kid.

Brandon Lloyd. If someone would have told me that he'd eclipse 100 yards receiving in 5 of his first 8 games, I'd call you crazy.

1. The Cowboys being 1-7

2. How good Bradford has been as a rookie (I liked him out of college, but I didn't think he'd be this good, this soon)

3. The fact that the Raiders last 2 draft classes have produced so many productive players, so quickly.

The amount of injuries this year has been a huge shocker. I almost feel like I have a concussion from watching football this year.

1. Cowboys stinking

2. Bradford/McCoy looking this good (Bradford I expected, McCoy I thought would need some time)

3. Clay Matthews domination

4. Freeman has looked like maybe the best QB in his class

5. Raiders looking the part of division champs

*the above is in no particular order

The fact Andy Reid actually benched Kolb.

McCoy didnt surprise me much as I liked him better then any other QB coming out.

The lack of a running game in Carolina. Who would have thought that Jonathan Stewart would be found on the waiver wire in so many leagues?

The consistent play of McFadden

The lack of TD's from Reggie Wayne

The stupidity of Todd Haley

How bad Shaub has looked

1. The Cowboys self-destruction. Not just that they are 1-7, but the way the team folded.

2. McNabb being benched for Rex Grossman. :goodposting:

3. Don't ever recall this many injuries

4. Randy Moss being on his third team of the season. And who says this is the last stop?

I'm with the OP on McCoy. I was not a McCoy supporter at all and especially when he was picked by the Browns so needless to say, I'll gladly have a crow sandwich with regards to McCoy. Michael Vick is also shocking the heck out of me.

The low ratings of the T.Ocho show
This is probably the one thing I'm not at all surprised about.

Like they always say, you can't measure heart and desire. You put McCoy's brains and ticker inside JaMarcus Russell's body and you'd have Peyton Manning.

Also in the 10 games he has played with Orton at the helm he has averaged 5 catches / 99ypg
Can you guys stop talking! I dropped him after the Seattle game when it looked like Thomas would pass him as Orton's favorite target.

1. Brandon Lloyd - On pace for 1750+ yards (3rd all-time); for a guy in his eight season who's career best was 733 yards to do that is amazing to me.

2. Arian Foster - There has a lot of FF pre-season hype, but no one expected him to be on pace for 5th all-time for single season yards from scrimmage.

3. Phillip Rivers - Another guy on pace for a record season; his 327 passing yards a game put him on pace for 5200 for the season; an all-time NFL record.

I doubt any of the three keep up the pace they are on, but through eight games, all three are on pace for amazing, record breaking seasons.

keeping pace is a little relative ... Rivers is going to have to throw a hell of a lot if this team wants a shot

A big, fat donut eating Peyton Manning.

I know a lot of people would say "we told you so" and some of it is due to injury, but I never thought Ryan Mathews would fall as flat as he has.

Even with the QB change, I thought Fitzgerald would put up WR1 numbers.

Can't say one thing as a lot has shocked me:

Colt McCoy have any sort of NFL success.

Vick playing at the level he is.

Moss - Team #3 of season

The level at which Arian Foster and Peyton Hillis have performed all year.

1. Brandon Lloyd on pace for 1756 yards and validating the much scorned WR 8th year break-out theory. More yards so far this season then he had in his previous 4 seasons combined.

2. Cleveland soundly beating the Saints and Patriots with Colt McCoy at QB.

Easily the top 2 shocks for me are Lloyd and McFadden. The McFadden turn around is easier to understand than Lloyd.

Lloyd totally breaks the mold. I didn't even realize this guy was still in the league before the season started.

I drafted him in a dynasty league years ago. You always follow players you once owned a little more than the average player but I had given up following this guy at least 4 years ago. Truly shocking to see him put up one of the all time great seasons for a WR so far.

that this may have been the year that a team of waiver wire pickups could win most leagues. of course you would have to know which waiver wire picks to make :goodposting:

Lloyd's season is certainly a shocker, but a lot of folks thought there was a good chance new OC Hue Jackson's schemes would bring out the best in McFadden. I wasn't totally sold on that, so I drafted both McFadden and Bush as insurance.

FreemanHillisBlountBJGELloydSteve JohnsonTammeAny KARZ (play the WW anyway)Honorable Mentions: Brandon Jackson may have been on waivers, Tolbert, Lance Moore, I bet Santonio/VJax/Rice were on a lot of WW til recently and could be factors if you survived this long

In a reasonably competitive league I also picked up Vick, Bryant, Hernandez and Pettigrew.

Good examplesWe have a 10 team league with pretty small rosters (so I know some of these wouldn't be on other leagues wire).... in addition to your mentions... we had these on the waiver wire immediately after the draftOrtonRB would probably be the toughest spot to fill on waiver wire (those that you mentiond are top of list)WR (we start three WR with no TE) add Britt to your list so hind sight is 20/20 waiver wire starting lineupOrtonHillisGreen-Ellis (weakest spot)or Brandon Jackson (in fairness this was due to a week 1 injury)LloydJohnsonBritt

I have a hard time believing any competitive league had Orton and/or Britt on the wire. A good QB last year probably drafted as a QB2 or a QBBC guy in 95+% of leagues - and Britt was a #1 WR on a team...they all get drafted.

I did totally overlook Vick though, because I had him in my 2 dynasties already I didn't even think about that. I did scoop him in my redraft though.

Someone might have drafted Britt then dropped him after a couple weeks due to injuries at other positions.

Excellent addition of Vick. He wasn't drafted in our league either. Fair points about Orton and Britt, but we have a few people who don't draft a second QB and I guess people didn't have him in top 15. Interesting point about Britt, but I don't think it's uncommon for a #1 on some teams to not be drafted. I had him ranked in the 40's on my WR/TE combo board. I by no means consider myself a master of this game though so I won't argue whether he should have been drafted.

Vick actually throwing from the pocket with any consistency.

Aaron Hernandez

Steve Johnson going from a guy have never heard of in the off-season, to a must-start in my leagues.

Orton carrying my team until Big Ben came off suspension

TO going from washed up in Buffalo to rock solid stud even with Noodle arm at the helm in Cincinnati.

Stafford barely playing after being a good sleeper preseason

Freeman living up to the promise I saw in him in 2009

Foster performing better than MJD

The Panthers running game going from supporting 2 RBs to exactly none.
