I was amazed. I thought for sure Jeter would get it. Especially after his third gold glove, not a bad record for somebody who is probably the worst fielder at his position in the history of the game, based on chances accepted per game. I was told that Jeter also got the best hitter award over Ortiz. What a joke. Ortiz was the best hitter in the league both last year and this, based on player win averages, which gives credit for increasing or decreasing the probability of winning the game with each at bat, although not quite so overwhelmingly as in 2005. Actually, Morneau wasn't a great pick either. I had Hafner rated tops, but based on the record of his team, I would have go with Mauer as the MVP. Ortiz of course has the problem of being a DH, as does Hafner.
For batters, I had Hafner 5.4, Mauer 5.0, Ortiz 4.5, Young 4.2, Tejada 4.1, Sizemore 3.9, Guillen 3.8, Thome 3.5, Posada 3.4, Ramirez 3.2, Dye 3.1, Kinsler 3.1, Guerrero 2.9, Jeter 2.9, Morneau 2.8. For pitchers, it was a good year for relievers, with Papelbon 4.6, Rivera 4.6, Santana 4.6, Nathan 4.2, Rodriguez 3.9, Liriano 3.7, Ryan 3.7, Halladay 3.3, Otsuka 2.9.
