Alex Rios (1 Viewer)

I know how waivers work, for the most part( :towelwave: ) and the Blue Jays' higher-ups screwed the pooch here.

If JP really wanted to, I'm 100% sure some team would have offered at least a decent prospect or two for an excellent defensive outfielder who probably has one or two career years with the bat ahead of him(hopefully during the remainder of the contract). I'll say it again, and I'm pretty much 100% certain of this. JP wanted to keep Rios(and if you've read any books on the matter/studied body language, this was obvious at the presser, but the higher-ups saw a chance to slash pay-roll. Time will tell if it was a good call, of course, but I'm banking on Chicago's launching pad of stadium working wonders on Rios' hitting.

For White Sox fans, this is excellent news(acting like the RedSox/Yankees/Cubs with money), for the rest of the AL Central, or the AL in general, this development isn't the greatest news in the world. Lets see if Kenny Williams can build a consistent title contender with a big-market payroll(I'm thinking he most certainly will).

At a wedding party:

Dr Detroit: Hey looks like the WS are getting Rios.

Buddy: Yeah that sucks, wish we would have gotten him.

Dr Detroit: For this year, yeah. But he is grossly over compensated.

Buddy: He's got a pretty decent track record.

Dr Detroit: You must be thinking of the roided-up rios

Buddy: Dude still has pop

Dr Detroit: Not really, I don't think his slugging is even .450 and his OBP blows.

Buddy: No way, he definitely has a .450 SLG

Dr Detroit: Me taking the slip of bridesmaid #4 vs $50 says he isn't slugging .450

Buddy: You're on

[checks crackberry]

Dr. Detroit: .430

Buddy: I don't feel like I lost anything here.

Dr Detroit: I feel like I've won more than you can count (bridesmaid #4 was smoking hot).

;) s all around.

Any chance the Jays just let him and his contract go for nothing?
I would have to think so, or at least let him go for marginal prospects. I like Rios as a player, but he has a long term contract at pretty big money. The Jays already have the albatross of vernon Wells' contract. The obvious issue is alienating their fan base by letting him walk for nothing.
These guys get it

Letting him go for nothing isn't the issue...I mean, if they could not get anything for the guy then they made the right move. But do you honestly mean to tell me they couldn't have gotten anything for the guy? Heck, get a player than has career backup upside...but get SOMETHING if possible. I call shenanigans on them not being able to get anything for him before the trade deadline.Just a poor job from management and ownership.J.P. still needs to be fired.

Oh, well if you're 100% certain, that changes my opinion.

What if they take the Rios money and roll it into a new Halladay contract? I'll bet that'd change your tune.

Maybe, but they still got nothing for a talented young player who many believe still has a career year or two left in the bat. Time will tell if it was a good move, and from a pure economic perspective, it probably will turn out to be one...

Finless should probably update the sub-title. Every time the thread gets topped, I think the White Sox waived Rios too.
