And on the same day, they also signed QB Josh Johnson to a 2 year deal. JJ played for Harbaugh at San Diego fwiw.
after this signing, interesting question is who will be the #2.
hell after training camp now the question will be who is #1. there must not have been a agreement like Drew Stanton thought he had inplace. When Alex saw this transaction he had to be thinking "Son of a B1T<h". i know after reading what Alex's contract really was and this signing i got excited that Josh really has a shot at being our starter. Even after the year we and Alex had i am just so tired of seeing that damn guy behind center, lol. he makes me think of a career politician that doesn't do a damn thing and keeps getting a check

One way or another it looks like Smith's days are numbered in SF. Clearly Harbaugh wants to go with an athletic QB.

good coaching matters. you want to compare walsh and his coaching staff (and the legacy) to that of singletary and his? harbaugh showed what a single year of good coaching can do for smith. i expect smith to be less a game manager this next season. he had to be re-built after years and years of poor coaching, advice and distractions. this could be a great year for smith and 9ers fans.
The point is Smith has been fortunate for a Franchise to hold on to him this long and to keep giving him chances while other QB's would be traded or not signed. This was the second or third time Smith was a FA, and he still is with the team. I don't buy that he didn't have good coaches. Mike McCarthy, Norv Turner, Mike Martz, and even Jimmy Raye (who got a lot of production out of Smith with his spread) all are pretty solid QB coaches. Vernon Davis credits Singletary for his turnaround, and a lot of other 49er players went through the same thing Smith had. So the "poor coaching" thing is a myth.

ETA: the reason why Jim Hostler was promoted to OC was due to he being Smith's QB coach since he was drafted, and coached under McCarthy and Turner. So it wasn't like Nolan sacked Smith with a guy he didn't know.
:wall:  Excerpt from an Interview transcript with Alex after he signed:

Alex, it’s been a little bit of a soap opera this last week with your situation and the Peyton Manning situation, on parallel tracks. How eager are you to get all the headlines behind you and really start focusing on football?

“All of that aside, I guess I’ve just been anxious this entire time just to get back to football. Like I said, this free agency, this was my first time being a free agent and you know I wasn’t a fan of it. Football is where I want to be and I want to get back to work. I’m excited for that, yeah.”
This is the first time he tested FA
Ummmm, no. He restructured his contract in the offseason twice (after the 08 and 09 seasons), but he was never an actual free agent (although last offseason he was unsigned until the lockout ended).

Bolded=no.Can't just blame the coaching as the organization in total gets a massive fail for how they handled Smith. Great that VD credits Sing, but go back and watch the first game from 2010 and you will see the most pathetic coaching ever. Singletary was actually worse as a head coach than Nolan, which is hard to believe. And Nolan nearly ended Smith's career by calling out his toughness and never backing him. Martz? Please. Martz preferred JT O'fumblekins. Raye? Raye was brought in to simply be a yes guy to Singletary's "vision" and was a convenient fall guy when that "vision" inevitably imploded. I would have liked to see what could have happened in year three under Turner, but Norv departed after only one year. I will never understand how a franchise uses the first pick in the draft on a QB and basically tries to sabotage him every chance they get. They took every opportunity to destroy Smith's confidence. I think it's a credit to Smith that he's actually not horrible and has managed to be at least average.

Very few players have gone through what Smith has gone through. I don't feel bad for him as I'd trade places with him in a heartbeat, criticism and all, but Nolan and Singletary were a pair of the worst HCs I've seen. Singletary is a great man in many respects and it's no accident that he impacted VD so much. But as a head coach, he was an abject failure.
They never sabotaged Smith every chance they got. That's flat out hyperbolic crap. No one said both HC's were any good, but guess what? Harbaugh has won with their players, and Justin Smith would not be here if it wasn't for Nolan, and neither would Brooks. You're basing all this because of one thing you overlook: the 49ers have, since they drafted Smith put all their eggs in his basket. Show me the backups since 2005. Show me what they did outside of Smith at QB before last season. They got Dilfer in to mentor him. That's what they did. Shaun Hill was his closest competition, and Sing let him go. Even Rattay wanted Smith to compete for the job. Guess who made Smith starter before the 2005 season?

Martz brought in JTO because he saw the QB squad and needed a guy who was familiar with his offense. You remember Smith in the pre-season under the Martz offense don't you? He was pretty much abysmal running it, but he had a shot over Hill who Martz didn't like. He re-injured his shoulder that pretty much ended his season. Guess who ran Martz's offense and won Sing his job? Hill. Martz adjusted his offense so Hill's noodle arm could throw in it. Ya wanna know how many snaps Hill took before he played for the 49ers? Zero quality snaps. Zero, outside of a kneel down. Remember how he won games under Hostler/Tollner's offense?

I just do not buy what you're trying to sell here.

http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/2011/02/inside-the-49ers/harbaugh-on-knbr-i-like-alex/He wasn't under contract going into 2011. That technically makes him a FA. Had they not got Harbaugh or not fired Sing he would have been a goner, period.

He redid his deal with McGlouhan because if he didn't he would have been cut.

Not during a lockout, IMO. But tomatoes, tomahtoes. Doesn't matter. I'm not here to constantly go back and forth. You know a lot about the FO and organization and I'll never question your fan card. Youre entitled to have whatever views and opinions you want...bottom line is we're both Niner fans, so I'm gonna have another beer and enjoy my night. I hope you enjoy yours as well. Ill give you this - this place wouldn't be as interesting without you, man.

It's cool brah. Harbaugh has a way to go with me to wash the stink off the York era 49ers (I don't like Jed at all), and part of that stink is Smith. If I seem bent at times it's because of that.
