Sadly most of his career was not his fault when you consider how many coaching / playbook changes the guy went through. I think it was what? A new offense every year he was in the league followed by horrible coaching and lack of key players.
Ryan Leaf was a bigger bust because there was an actual argument he was better than Manning. Tim Couch was a bigger bust because he actually went ahead of Mcnabb. Smith is more just unfortunate that he was drafted as high as he was. If Leinart was greedier or SF was smarter, no one would care about how bad he's crashed and burned.

There was an article about a week or two ago that said even though he was the back up, this was his year to prove before some big escalators in his contract start, as to whether SF would keep him...well we know the answer now.
How bout Shaun Hill now? JT can't keep that job all year, right?

Its the same shoulder he hurt last year. They don't know how he hurt it. Beat writers reported he was throw the ball really well last week and then on friday he felt some discomfort. He went for a MRI and revealed he fractured a bone. He didnt take a hit on the shoulder during training camp so they are speculating his shoulder wasn't fully 'fixed' when he had his surgery.
Doctors are speculating that the fracture might be related to the suture that was used to reattach his shoulder to his collarbone in December. When Smith's shoulder was separated, the ligaments that connect the shoulder and collarbone were torn away. Dr. James Andrews re-connected those ligaments with a suture, which is where the fracture appears to have occured.
