Ironically, this might be a nice fit for Miami and Smith. Smith would be relatively cheap and expectations wouldn't be too high (no offense to the Dolhpins).

The irony of course is that Smith would actually be a viable FF QB if he stayed in SF due to the receiving group they have ammassed (R. Moss, Crabtree and Manninghame + VD) - that's a pretty sweet group of catching talent.

The story said that Smith and Manning have the same agent and that Smith is looking for a new agent now. Maybe he knows something? Interesting either way.

It'll be funny when the Niners go into next season with Jason Campbell as their starter.

Ooops, just realized Jason's been signed already. So the Niners can go into 2012 with Rex Grossman as their starter.

Nope...Grossman resigned with Washington.

But what about David Garrard? Not a longterm solution but not awful while they wait for CK to develop.

per Jason LaCanfora:Add another name to Miami's QB carousel: Former Jags starter David Garrard will visit this week. Alex Smith there now, Matt Flynn was prior

Reports are saying Flynn is still #1 on the Dolphins list. If the 2 year 12 million offer is true for Flynn, can you imagine how little they are offering Smith & Garrard.

As a 49er fan, I'm hoping Smith has some inside info that has made him start looking elsewhere.

Imagine if Manning goes to Ten or Den, Smith goes to Miami, and Flynn goes to SF?

In any case, I feel a bit bad for Smith but the truth is that he's just not very good. He did surprise me with his athleticism at times and he made some nice plays but also looked pretty pedestrian many times. I'm sure that some Niners fans would be furious if Alex Smith left, since he "led" them to the brink of an NFC Championship, but he's not a good long-term answer for them.

For the love of God and all things holy...why not give him a 5 yr/$25m deal that you can get out of in 1-2 years...no more than about $5-$10m guaranteed. You also want the guy to have the respect of his locker room...2 yrs and $12m says we like you but we don't really believe in you. Miami just gets worse and worse with every new piece of info that leaks from that front office...Miami has to be a nominee for worst front office in football, bar none right now.

They have some competition, but I agree that it's pretty astonishing that Ireland still has a job.

Hes already been in SF long term, and he was never the answer. I wouldnt mind if he signed elsewhere. I believe Harbaugh will get the best out whoever the starting QB is in SF. Even though Alex showed a good deal of improvement under Harbaugh, I still dont think he has a killer instinct, and he seems to take what the defense gives him most of the time. They need a QB that can read a defense and react, exploiting matchups. Alex has never been good at doing that.

If Smith goes to Miami, Manning to Denver or Tenn, and Flynn goes to Seattle then who becomes the 49ers QB?

Understandable for any team to go after Manning but I imagine Smith isnt happy the 49ers are doing so. San Fransisco was a step away from the Superbowl with Smith. This could turn on them real fast.

I have never been a Alex Smith fan but I can't help but root for the underdog. Smith signing in Seattle would be the most interesting scenario.

If SF doesn't get Manning, I'd be excited to see what Kaepernick can do. I think he's gonna be the real deal in this league.

Either that report isn't true or smith hasn't heard that offer towards Flynn b/c the supposed deal the niners offered smith and he rejected was equal or greater than that. Or the best possible outcome for us inner fans that they pulled the offer and he knows peyton is coming to town. He had an offer before the peyton/niners affair and he wanted more, I feel no remorse for him and don't see a downside either way if he's gone. Cap or josh Johnson can manage as well or make us more dangerous than we were with smith. I'd rather we even give the pats a 2nd for hoyer b/c I know he'd take a cheaper deal and be as or more effective

I think it's hilarious that Stephen Ross was so intent on making a big splash by adding Peyton to put butts in the seats in Miami, and a couple short weeks later his dummy GM may be on the verge of signing Alex Smith, who is probably not as good as Matt Moore the QB they already have. Yeah, Alex will fill the stadium alright. Go for it Miami.

I think SF will end up re-signing Smith, but it's wise of their front office to let him test the market to establish a price.

As a huge Niners fan and season ticket holder I don't feel bad for Alex at all. I like Alex Smith, but he was offered a decent contract that he recently turned down. His market is limited to one team and one team only. I can't see him starting from scratch again with another new coach and OC and succeeding. He is a system OB and the system finally found him. Plus how about all the money the Niners paid him over the last 6yrs that he under performed for with exception of the 2011 season.

If the Niners lose out on Peyton you will see Alex "The teflon man" Smith back in SF.

Peyton to Tenn

Alex to Miami

Matt Hass after getting cut from Tenn to SF

sorry, this is a prediction

Pete Carroll must have a log in over here.

i don't know any
:goodposting: If Alex leaves you'll have fans range from ecstatic to mildly disappointed. If he returns most will welcome him back but it won't be with champagne showers. It'll be met with a
This. But at this time I really expect to see Manning or Kaep under center next fall.I have the utmost respect for Alex Smith as a quality person. As a player, he may not have been set up to maximize his potential. Although last year was a fun ride, it's time to move on.

If San Fran doesnt get Manning, I would be perfectly fine with this scenario until Kaep is ready.

I agree 100% with this statement.

It depends on who they end up with. If they end up with Manning, he'll get a pass until the season starts at least. If they end up with no one significant, there will probably be some furiousness.
A. Smith should shop around, but I doubt anyone will sign him quickly with the other QBs still out there. If him and Manning (to Tennessee) are gone, Hasselbeck is a decent Dilfer fill in for a yr or two. No furious here.

Yes he is an UFA. Mike Klis reporting that Alex Smith is negotiating with Miami right now. Apparently met with the Dolphins for approx 6 hours today.

It is rumored that Smith turned down a 3 year $24 M contract with the 49ers. Flynn signed for 3 year 26 M with Seattle. I wonder if Alex is regretting that decision.

I believe Alex won't do anything until the Peyton situation is finalized. If Peyton Manning is a good guy he would make his decision sooner rather than later, so he doesn't hold the 49ers hostage and Alex Smith hanging in the wind.

Worst case scenario is Matt Hasselbeck will be the QB in SF next season.

I hope he signs with Miami. If this happens and Peyton wants to sign with SF, his asking price could skyrocket.

If I remember correctly, Hasselbeck was choosing between SF and Ten when Seattle let him go.

If I was Alex Smith I would have thanked God that I had fooled a team into thinking I was a starting NFL QB and laughed all the way to the bank.

He might be just a game manager but he has proved himself to be a good game manager. 17 TDs to 5 INTS. I was expecting him to be average in the playoffs but he was clutch especially against New Orleans. Does SF really want to take a chance with second year QB?

Smith is not irreplaceable. It can be argued you could plug in a lot of QBs to play conservative in our offense and have similar results. I'd even take Matt Moore as a plug in for a couple of years if it comes down to it. His TD, INT and QB ratio was not much off from Smith last year, and likely to improve on a squad like SFs.

QB Alex Smith negotiating with Dolphins; throws Manning waiting game for loop

In a seemingly sudden and stunning development, free-agent quarterback Alex Smith is in negotiations with the Miami Dolphins, according to an NFL source.

Smith led the San Francisco 49ers to the NFC championship game last season and although he was a free agent, the assumption through most of the offseason what that he would return.

The 49ers leap into the Peyton Manning derby, though, changed the dynamics of the NFL universe. Smith visited today with the Dolphins, who earlier this week made a pitch for Manning and another free-agent Matt Flynn.

Manning informed the Dolphins he would not be playing there and Flynn agreed Sunday to a deal with the Seattle Seahawks.

The Dolphins then turned to Smith, who will get a multiyear deal worth about $8 million a year.

So where does that leave the 49ers? If they don't get Manning, who has not operated the West Coast offense coached by Jim Harbaugh, would the 49ers bring in Matt Hasselbeck, who is currently the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, who are also in on Manning, along with the Broncos?

Follow? This could be one of the most bizarre episodes of quarterback musical chairs in NFL history.

I think I read somewhere that Manning and Smith have the same agent. Could Manning have agreed to wait to announce signing with the 49ers to allow Smith more leverage in negotiating with Miami? Just spitballing.

Read in a couple spots that Smith was changing agents. Maybe already has.

I believe he loses leverage by waiting. The other team(s) know he has one less team vying for his services once Manning signs. In fact, Miami could end up his only hope of landing a starting job.
