Last year, IIRC, the opinion seemed to be divided between those who thought he would never make an NFL QB, and those that thought he needed more time.

In my scoring system, he is 18th among QB's, and is leading a resurgent 49'ers team.

What does the Shark Pool think now?

I was underwhelmed yesterday, and disappointed because I was hoping to see him develop. He did throw a nice long ball to Bryant that was nullified by penalty, but it seemed clear to me that that the 49er coaching staff doesn't have faith in him yet. They played scared with a 20 point lead and nearly lost because of it. However, I still remain hopeful.

he has made extreme progress since last season, its almost like two different players. Last year he looked like he had CFL talent. Now I think he's got hope for the future. He is smart and makes good decisions, albeit safe ones. He needs to take more chances downfield, but hey, its a learning curve and if Norv Turner stays as his offensive coordinator for a few years, I like his chances

*** A couple notes, Palmers 2nd year in the NFL he was 24 years old. Alex Smith is only 22 years old in his 2nd year. Alex Smith does not have the same talent at WR that Palmer had. Plus Alex Smith has played all year without his freak-like TE Vernon Davis***

Just some interesting data I researched. Could be valuable info for Dynasty Leagues. I think Alex Smith has a bright future as a fantasy and NFL player. Plus the 49ers may have a high enough draft pick next year....maybe Calvin Johnson WR GT or Ted Ginn JR WR OSU is in their future???

What would Smith's stats look like if all of Bryant's long TD's/receptions this year were not always nullified by penalty. It has happened at least once every two games.
