Alright, what did we learn about the Minny running game? (1 Viewer)

Sure you can. People LOVE to do that on these boards. :ptts: But I agree with you.
I have to say, you've got stones for keeping that signature up.
 2 pages of signature for 1 line of content?
:mellow:I've had this up for two hours now, and nobody's gotten the joke.Amazing that this place has its collective heads so far up its ###, that NOBODY got that I was mocking people.Wow.
No one is going to take the time to read it to get any joke that's being made in it.

And you're STILL missing the idea.Wow. I'm simply amazed by this place. Yes, talking fantasy football is fun. Yes, we're here for information. But Jesus, can we lighten up a bit?

Things I've learned:ADP had two carries and one catch in the second half (on two looks). I don't think anything more needs to be said about that. At least they used him on kickoff returns!
 This says it all. There is no excuse for AP to have only 3 touches in the second half.

Keys, dunno what the joke was - but thx for getting rid of the 50-line sig.

About the Minny running game, I'm going to stay out of it this time around. All I can say is the coach said it was going to be Taylor starting/RBBC, and thats what happened. Peterson looked great. Chester looked OK for his first start back from injury. I think he'll improve.

We've learned what we already knew and the AP crowd still does not want to believe. This is a RBBC.
:goodposting: if AP is given 75%+ of the carries and gets hurt, and a quality player like chester is sitting on the bench, the mob will be demanding childress' head for playing AP too much... let's face it, AP has experienced issues with injuries (some being pretty serious) in the past at oklahoma... giving away a few carries to taylor is in the best interest of AP owners...
The coaches job is to win games regardless of what the mob wants. When it comes to winning games, there's something to be said for not wearing out AP. But given how few touches he had in the game and how the game was going, that doesn't seem to me to be a very good justification for how Childress used him.

Based on the Chili press conference going on now nothing is likely going to change. He is going to risk AP getting injured on kick returns and he's not going to give him the rock over Chester.
This is a classic example of ego overriding common sense and intelligence. Childress won't make a change now because to do so would acknowledge he made a mistake before. Forget that by acknowledging the mistake you bolster your team's chances at success down the road. It's more important to maintain the "I know what I'm doing approach" even when it's clear to everyone and their mother (except maybe Chester's) that the approach being used isn't helping the team but rather hurting the team.

Well, if he keeps this up and ends up with under 5 wins he's writing his own ticket out of town. It's amazing the way some people will cut off their nose to spite their face.

And herein lies the problem:

Childress was then asked if he was trying to save Peterson early in the season. ”I think you’re mindful of that when you have a two running back attack, that you’re not going to use somebody all the way throughout,” Childress said. “And that’s the great thing about having two guys that you feel equally good about and equally explosive about."

Childress thinks ADP and Taylor are equals.

Also:

When asked why Peterson had only two carries in the second half:

“I’m not so keen on that as him being a good teammate and contributing in whatever way he can like in those kickoff returns,” Childress said.

I am not sure what to make of that comment - either ADP is not a good teammate, or Childress is old school and thinks you have to pay your dues in the league before you can be a superstar.

Childress is an idiot.

AP is a rare breed and he's going to make a lot of people sick if AP gets hurt on a stupid Special Teams play like Greenway did last year.

Wow, this guy might get fired sooner than I thought.

First, he makes a completely maddening assertion that anyone with a pair of eyes would disagree with, saying they're equals when its plain as day that ADP has roughly 20-billion times as much talent as Chet, and then this:

“I’m not so keen on that as him being a good teammate and contributing in whatever way he can like in those kickoff returns,” Childress said.

Translation: to me, maintaining some abstract status quo about the place rookies should be in is more important to me than winning football games. If anyone has a different explanation of that comment I'd love to hear it, because to me that's almost like saying he threw the game on purpose to make a point. If I was an owner and I heard my head coach make a comment like that, I'd be giving a few guys some phone calls.

Seriously, this just blows my freaking mind that he would openly say something like that. I now officially hate this guy.

I think this may have more to do with how many passing plays they ran. (I forgot, but it seems like Holcomb threw the ball like 40 times.)

Let's pretend this isn't even about AP vs. Chester (even though that's a problem in and of itself).

My question is this:

If you have the top run defense in the league and overall good defense and two very good RB's (per Childress himself) and are in a tight game against a division rival with your 2nd string QB as your starter and your top WR has 15 catches for 173 yds and 0 TDs through 4 weeks (run-on sentence anyone?), then

WHY ARE YOU THROWING THE BALL 39 TIMES AND ONLY GIVING YOUR TWO RUNNING BACKS 20 CARRIES COMBINED?

Childress = fired. The writing on the wall couldn't be clearer. This guy has no business running an nfl team

There is TRULY an easy explanation for all this. Childress was channeling Norv Turner in the 2nd Half. He figures that if Norv isn't going to Let LT run in the 2nd, why should he let AD.

I agree. I thought Childress was going to be a "deep thinker" type of coach, but I'm starting to think he's an idiot that wears glasses to make him look smart.

Agreed. Peterson was getting 20 to 30 carries a game when he was at Oklahoma and ended every year (except maybe his freshman year?) hurt. RBBC could extend his season and maybe even his career.

I really don't think any AP supporters are saying he should be getting 20-30 carries/game right now. And I don't think any AP supporters would mind Chester spelling him during the game to keep him fresh for the game and for the season. But 2 carries in the entire 2nd half (30 min of gametime) is not RBBC. That's just yellow short-bus dumb.

Perhaps he's a "deep drinker" instead. He kind of coaches like me. I wind up with my most productive player on the bench routinely too.AP was misused in the second half but at least he got to run some in the first. Chili must have thought it would be too hard on AP to have him run against the GB defense once they got tired. Much better to run CT who is a solid player but not a game-breaker. Better to have AP out there on the return team so that guys can be running at full speed when they hit him. He'd never get hurt that way.

Two carries in the second half of a close game is MIND BOGGLING. There is no other way to put it. Childress is indeed a moron.

Post of the day right here, especially the bolded part.People that can't get out of "old traditions" absolutely blow my mind. Sure, don't put him in on 3rd downs if he can't pass-block. But Jesus...get a grip on reality.

To AP's credit, he hasn't snapped yet and called out Chili yet. Everyone else in Minneapolis has, just not AP.

Hopefully, AP's new role will be well defined when they come out of the break. Realistically, more of the same.

To answer the question in the thread title...We learned that AP is the best player on the team. There is also enough commitment to Taylor to ensure he continues to his share of get carries. We also learned that the Vikings have not figured out how to use their duo of RBs to wear down another team and win a game.

Why keep hitting your head against a brick wall? I mean Peterson was only averaging 10 YPC in the first half. With production like that, what coach wouldn't ditch the running game?I also really appreciated how they not only threw the ball on every 3rd and short situation but they generally lined up in the shotgun, even on 3rd and 1. When your running game is being totally shut down like that, you might as well let the defense know you aren't even going to try.

Usually when you have an incumbant keeping his job over a clearly superior talent, you have one of two situations:2. Rookie struggles with the non-flashy parts of a positioin. For RBs, this is usually pass blocking and hot route responsibilities. I can't bring myself to watch that much MN football, but I did hear the commentators talking about a missed assignment for ADP when I checked into the game. Would like to hear what people watching closely think.
I'm pretty sure I saw the play they were talking about. GB was blitzing from the right side and ADP hesitated in taking his blocking assignment. He ended up whiffing completely and not blocking either of the two guys who naturally crushed Holcomb. I wouldn't be surprised if that was one the reasons we didn't see ADP more after that.

That particular play was pretty early in the game, IIRC. I'd have to watch the recording of the game to double check for sure.
