Amendola to New England (1 Viewer)

So...Brady has 2.5 to 5 years left in his career. Welker has 1.5 to 3 years left in his career. If the Amendola experiment is an abject failure, the Pats still have Hernandez/Gronk/Edelman/Woodhead/Ridley/etc and will probably be a tad better than most offenses. If Amendola can produce at 80% of Welker's level, the Pats will continue to one of if not the best offense in the NFL. The issue with the Patriots remains, as it has been since Rodney and Teddy left, the back 7 on defense. Pay Talib or Ed or Golston or ....
Golston is signed already. And Edelman isn't a Patriot at this point.

Honestly-- I think this is a horrible move for New England. They let Welker go for less money than Amendola which makes no sense to me. If you look at New Englands offense-- their receiving core is horribly injury prone--including the tight ends. Gronk is injury prone, as is Hernandez. Now you add Amendola to that mix--and you have a receiving squad that is made of glass. Even if Amendola ends up working out--I just find the move to be far more risky than its worth. The only way the Pats should have made this move is if Amendola was available at a heavy discount versus bringing Welker back. The Pats could have at least argued that the risk/reward made more sense if Amendola was to cost them less. However, at the deal that Amendola got--I just don't see the risk reward making sense.
This is the bniggest concern for me.With that being said, it is NE and as a football fan I trust their judgment.
Is this one of those slang terms the kids are using?
:bag:
I'm still getting used to "shizzle." Time has passed me by.

Man, I came here to celebrate Amendola's new value (own him everywhere), but it's a pretty somber place. It's the FF equivalent of showing up to your girlfriend's grandmother's wake drunk from a St Patty's parade.**Long story.
He's been chronically underrated by FBGs, in my opinion. Last year I think they had him ranked around WR50-60 in redraft. Right now they have him ranked WR43 in Dynasty.

I like this move. Welker was awesome for us but i think he is slowing down, which will kill his value. He has been hit hard and often. Many miles on those wheels.

Now I hope they sign Edelman and Woodhead.

This I don't get. Welker's never been a burner. He's been uber solid for short and mid-range passes. As a Giants fan, I still don't know how we beat he Pats when it seems like EVERY third down was caught by Welker for a first. He could slow down a bit and still get the separation he needs, which is part quicks and mostly smarts and an understanding of where the crease in the defense will be.And while Amendola is great when he's healthy.........

Yeah, the only downside I see for NE here is the injury concerns with the trio of Gronk, Hernandez and Amendola. I don't think too highly of Lloyd personally, so IMO they really need all those 3 of those guys to be healthy in the playoffs.

And in a month and a half NE will have Tavon Austin...
Will need to trade way up.
Not necessarily. I think Patterson falls lower than most are mocking him, and Allen will likely go before Austin. If Austin makes it to the 20's, MIN and STL are really the only teams that would be looking WR there. That said, Austin replacing Harvin or Amendola is just as perfect of a replacement as Austin for Welker.Fantasy wise, best landing spot is certainly NE though.

As a Pats fan, how can you NOT love this deal? Seriously, get over it. This has been a long time coming, and gives Brady and the Pats an even better chance at making a run. I mean honestly, the only competition in the division is Tannehill to Wallace, and that combination just makes me laugh. We get an explosive play maker with better hands that's younger and has the potential to put up better numbers than Welker. Come October, Welker will be an afterthought.
Since when has the competition within the division been the Pats problem?
Since 2011, when the Jets whipped the Pats in the playoffs.eta* and whipped badly.
and now add garrard to the mix
When all else fails, beat on the Jets. :bag: *eta and as football fans, this is a failure. WR1-2-3 in Denver are probably the best in the NFL right now.
Probably? IMO it isnt close.
Caution here on my end. Can't recite 1-2-3 for all the teams from memory.eta* e.g., Harvin, Rice, Baldwin.
Does Gronk, Hernandez, Amendola count?

Yeah, Thomas-Decker-Welker................whether or not they have the most talent of any top 3 WRs from any team, their skill levels and styles go so well with Manning that it's a landslide victory over any other QB-WR-WR-WR grouping.
No offense to the great Peyton Manning, but when you start factoring QB into the equation the gap between which team has the best top 3 WRs narrows because Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings (presuming he returns to Green Bay), Jordy Nelson, and either Randall Cobb or James Jones is very strong. I'd still give Denver the edge, but not in a landslide.
Ive never heard of this combining the QB to rank the best receiving corps, but using this thought process just shows that DEN is better than GB because I think those WRs are much more a function/successful because of Rodgers. Pure talent wise, Im not sure Jennings is even a Top 25 WR, Cobb's game is predicated on his speed, and I think Nelson and Jones would be no names on a lot of teams with subpar QBs. Just my opinion though.

It's being reported today that Amendola signed Tuesday.

With that news, it's clear the Pats didn't have Welker in their plans. Also seems like that could **** off Welker even more. I expect him to either put up 250 yards against the Pats this year or be the greatest decoy ever as BB does everything in his power to limit Welker and save face.

From FBG's 2012 Free Agent Tracker-

Amendola is one of a handful of slow, possession receivers that optimists classify as a "Poor Man's Wes Welker." That doesn't mean much unless he's in a perfect system lacking in alternative targets.

They had him rated as a 2(1-5 scale) for free agents. N.E. doesn't lack in alternative targets and how quick is Amendola?

The word locally is the Pats wanted both Welker and Amendola...Amendola wasn't just a replacement or a backup plan...that being said they played hardball and decided they weren't going to offer Welker a dime more than 2 for 10 with incentives so they could not have wanted him to stay that much...

Not really what I've been hearing at all, and doesn't seem all that plausible to me. Who is saying this?

Heard it twice on the radio...been listening so much not sure whether it was Reiss, Rappaport or some else but they basically said that the Pats wanted Amendola regardless of whether Welker took their offer...that being said everything is a question mark with this situation...right now Reiss is saying he's 100% certain the Pats were given a chance to match and Borges is saying he's 100% certain they weren't...I do believe the Pats were targeting Amendola from as far back as last summer...that I really do believe...

I do too. Amendola had been in the Boston area to attend a funeral for a family member and there were reports that while there flirted with Pats before he re-signed with the Rams (his agent denied it and NE had no comment, but the speculation had a ring of truth to me at the time and it still does).

Well, one part of Welker's game that Amendola won't be replaceing - punt returns. Pats sign return specialist Leon Washington. For those of you (like me) in a league where you receive points for return yards, you won't be getting much in that department from Amendola like you occasionally got from Welker.

Danny Amendola's five-year Patriots contract is worth $27.7 million. The deal was originally reported at an agent-inflated $31 million. Amendola wound up getting less money per year than Wes Welker, which further supports the notion that the Patriots signed Amendola before Welker left for Denver. The Patriots also smartly tied up $1.72 million of the deal in per-game roster bonuses, meaning injury-prone Amendola will have to stay healthy to get that money. His signing bonus is $6 million. Amendola gets $10 million guaranteed.
