Amendola to New England (1 Viewer)

1st time poster here, long time browser.Nobody is Wes Welker. I agree with the above sentiments that Wes used to take horrible shots going over the middle and then bounce back up. Amendola has never proven to be that guy, ever. Amendola dreams of being Welker and that is the dumbest thing ever to pay him like he is Wes. What a complete slap in the face. I hope Welker lights them up with Peyton in Foxboro just rub their noses in it.
Welker will have a 12/200/3 type game to boot. Should be fun.

Can we please stop with the "explosive" stuff? Neither guy is explosive. They both are quick, but neither is explosive.

And if there was one stat to check explosiveness, I would think it is yards per catch. Amendola is under 9 for his career. Welker is at 11.5.

I would actually say YAC is a better stat for explosiveness, not YPC.

What joke. I bet Tom Brady is not happy about this. I mean, why sign the poor man's Welker, when you can keep the real version for the same money? And to add insult, he goes to one of the other elite teams in the conference to play with Brady's main career QB rival. WTF.

I think it's possible that Amendola could be an upgrade over Welker. It's possible. I do think he is more explosive than Welker at this stage, although most of what I've seen Amendola in games has been on turf. Anyway, it's possible. I'm just in no way interested in taking the risk right now given the things that everyone has already mentioned - Brady's window, Welker's price, and Amendola's durability.
I agree with you that Amendola could be better. I think he will be. People tend to underestimate how much athleticism in terms of quickness comes into play for a slot WR. Welker turns 32 in a couple of months. I would much rather have Amendola in his mid 20s prime years than Welker as he slows down at age 32 and 33.The Pats aren't stupid. They know when to cut bait. They took a lot of heat for dumping Randy Moss for a third rounder when Moss was 33. Situations aren't too dissimilar. You pay for what guys will do, not what they have done.

New england probably thought welker would come back no matter what and didnt think hed call their bluff.
Tough to "bluff" when a guy can easily get his value on the open market... In fact, I'm surprised Denver got him for as little as they did... I have to believe BB didn't want him giving they didn't/wouldn't at least meet that contract. Is BB just enamored with getting younger? Or did Welker just get on his bad side? Either way, i see little upside for NE.

As a Pats fan, how can you NOT love this deal? Seriously, get over it. This has been a long time coming, and gives Brady and the Pats an even better chance at making a run. I mean honestly, the only competition in the division is Tannehill to Wallace, and that combination just makes me laugh. We get an explosive play maker with better hands that's younger and has the potential to put up better numbers than Welker. Come October, Welker will be an afterthought.

Since when has the competition within the division been the Pats problem?

Great. And the Jets are a joke now. My point was, the AFC East has rarely been a big road block to the SB for the Pats.

Honestly-- I think this is a horrible move for New England. They let Welker go for less money than Amendola which makes no sense to me. If you look at New Englands offense-- their receiving core is horribly injury prone--including the tight ends. Gronk is injury prone, as is Hernandez. Now you add Amendola to that mix--and you have a receiving squad that is made of glass. Even if Amendola ends up working out--I just find the move to be far more risky than its worth. The only way the Pats should have made this move is if Amendola was available at a heavy discount versus bringing Welker back. The Pats could have at least argued that the risk/reward made more sense if Amendola was to cost them less. However, at the deal that Amendola got--I just don't see the risk reward making sense.

They aren't very good right now. But they were in the AFC championship in '10 and '11. Things change really quickly when you make poor decisions at key positions. That's all I'm saying. Hey, if you sign Cruz, well...you're ahead of the game.

:X and to think a few hours ago I felt like it couldn't get any worse.
I guess you were still shocked then.
I see Danny Amendola as the perfect FA signing for NE this year. Wes Welker clone but 4 years younger. Probably be a bit cheaper than Wes too.
I'd be kind of surprised if the pats came up with the money it would take to sign him, but they've surprised me in the past
Although he wasn't cheaper by a longshot.

When all else fails, beat on the Jets. :bag: *eta and as football fans, this is a failure. WR1-2-3 in Denver are probably the best in the NFL right now.

Love the Amendola underestimation in here. Bring it.
I'm hoping it holds for next years draft. Grabbing him in the 6th or 7th would be a steal.
Really? If he wasnt so injury prone, I might agree, but his upside I think is limited in that offense. Now if Gronk or Hernandez - who have their own injury issues - are out, I think Amendola will be quite consistent. Otherwise, I dunno. Id be shocked if his ADP is 6th round this year though. When Lloyd's ADP was that high last year, at least he put up a top 3 FF WR season in a lesser offense only 2 years prior.

tough day at the office to be a pats fan -- I need a dog to kick, or something.

If Amendola didn't have injury problems I would understand. However given his history I would be surprised if he plays as many games as Welker the next two years.

Caution here on my end. Can't recite 1-2-3 for all the teams from memory.eta* e.g., Harvin, Rice, Baldwin.

Does Gronk, Hernandez, Amendola count?

Yeah, Thomas-Decker-Welker................whether or not they have the most talent of any top 3 WRs from any team, their skill levels and styles go so well with Manning that it's a landslide victory over any other QB-WR-WR-WR grouping.

I'm a little surprised they didn't kick the tires on Cruz. Sure the price of giving up a 1st is steep, but if they wanted to go younger, I think Cruz is miles ahead of Amendola.

No offense to the great Peyton Manning, but when you start factoring QB into the equation the gap between which team has the best top 3 WRs narrows because Aaron Rodgers, Greg Jennings (presuming he returns to Green Bay), Jordy Nelson, and either Randall Cobb or James Jones is very strong. I'd still give Denver the edge, but not in a landslide.

Man, I came here to celebrate Amendola's new value (own him everywhere), but it's a pretty somber place.

It's the FF equivalent of showing up to your girlfriend's grandmother's wake drunk from a St Patty's parade.*

*Long story.

So...Brady has 2.5 to 5 years left in his career. Welker has 1.5 to 3 years left in his career. If the Amendola experiment is an abject failure, the Pats still have Hernandez/Gronk/Edelman/Woodhead/Ridley/etc and will probably be a tad better than most offenses. If Amendola can produce at 80% of Welker's level, the Pats will continue to one of if not the best offense in the NFL. The issue with the Patriots remains, as it has been since Rodney and Teddy left, the back 7 on defense. Pay Talib or Ed or Golston or ....

This is the biggest concern for me.With that being said, it is NE and as a football fan I trust their judgment.
