American held hostage by al Qaeda appeals to Obama... (1 Viewer)

Anyone care to try and explain how this guy is having trouble speaking English?

From the CNN article:

There was no immediate word on Bergdahl's condition after his release. A senior Defense official said Bergdahl is having trouble speaking English but the reasons for that were not clear, given the trauma he's been through.

Israel traded hundreds of terrorists to get one soldier back.

If Obama had refused this deal, he would have been heavily criticized by many of the same people ripping him now.
You tell us all the time how Israel and its position is unique so now you are using it for justification?

And if Obama had refused the deal we never would have known about it so how could it be criticized?

I swear you are just as bad as the guys that on reflex defended GWB on everything because of the attacks from the left.
There's plenty to criticize Obama about. I've done my share. But this is crap. Wlll Oliver North show up on Fox and rip Obama for this?
Looks like pretty much everybody from everywhere is showing up to rip Obama for this.
Not this kid's family. They're just happy to get him back after 5 long years. None of us know all the details but from what we know, I approve of this deal.
Too bad the families of the 5 soilders who were killed trying to rescue him after he appearently denounced America and the military in an email to his family and then deserted the military en route to being captured will never have their kids come home. This is definitely a controversial move.

My guess would be because English wasn't used often around him, and if it's not practiced, it's often lost.

I find it hard to believe he forgot how to speak English. Obviously, this guy is a loon. Why we decided to save him, of all the people in the world who are in serious trouble, is very confusing to me.

That's what I was thinking, I guess it's hard for me to grasp that idea of forgetting your primary language. Do you even stop thinking in English? He was said to be learning Pashtun and other languages when he was enlisted, maybe he wanted to forget English?

I wouldn't go that far, but he obviously wasn't playing with a full deck to begin with. Who on earth would abandon their post and go on walk-about in the middle of Afghanistan? Where exactly was he planning to go?

The other thing we need to discuss here is dealing with the Taliban. The Taliban is an evil organization, among the worst people on this planet. But we've been trying to destroy them for 13 years now and we haven't done it. We can't stay in Afghanistan much longer either. So as bad ad the Taliban is, we have to try diplomacy with them on some level. That's not weak; there is simply no alternative.

If released, detainee would likely rejoin the Taliban and establish ties with ACM

elements participating in hostilities against US and Coalition forces in Afghanistan.

GTMO detennined this detainee to be:

0 A HIGH risk, as he is likely to pose a threat to the US, its interests, and allies

Reasons for Continued Detention: Detainee is an admitted senior official of

the Taliban government and anny and was last assigned to the position of Deputy Minister of

Defense. Detainee also served as Chief of Staff ofthe Taliban Army and a commander of the

22nd Division. Detainee is wanted by the UN for possible war crimes including the murder

of thousands of Shiites. Detainee had operational associations with significant al-Qaida and

other extremist personnel. Detainee wielded considerable influence throughout the northern

region of Afghanistan and his influence continued even after his capture. If released,

detainee would likely rejoin the Taliban and establish ties with anti-Coalition militias (ACM)

participating in hostilities against US and Coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Mullah Norullah Nori

Assessment: Detainee is assessed to be a HIGH risk, as he is likely to pose a threat to the US, its interests and allies. b. (S//NF) Reasons for Continued Detention: Detainee is an admitted senior member of the Taliban and led troops against US and Coalition forces. Detainee was directly subordinate to Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Omar, commanded Taliban forces in northern Afghanistan, and in late 2001, he was in charge of Taliban troops positioned near Mazar-e-Sharif. The allegations around Noori centre on an August 1998 massacre of up to 8,000 Shiites at the hands of the Taliban, who were bent on avenging the killing of 2,000 of their own men a year earlier.

@ Tim:

How would you say the citizens of Balkh, especially our allies who have laid out themselves and their families for us, are feeling right about now?

Has anyone seen pics of Bob Bergdahl, the soldier's father? He looks like an American Taliban himself. And from what I've heard of his tweets, he apparently sounds like one, too.
What did he do on twitter that makes him sound like one? Anything other than call for closing Guantanamo?
That's not what he said.

Earlier, Bergdahl had apparently deleted a tweet reading, “I am still working to free all Guantanamo prisoners.”

Those are the two tweets I see that people are upset about. Any others?

Well, according to one of his squadmates, maybe China?

A former member of Bergdahl's squad who has yet to identify his last name publicly but goes by "Cody" tweeted this weekend that before he disappeared, Bergdahl once told him, "If deployment is lame, I'm going to get lost in the Mountains and make my way to China."

I think when this guy gets interviewed, and he will, it will be a real lulu.

This is something that we as a nation are starting to figure out. That not only do we bring home a large number of veterans with mental health issues, we do a poor job of screening those with such issues out during enlistment.

The differences that I am seeing is that he's not looking to close Guantanamo, but rather "free" all the prisoners there. Second, I'm not sure what the second part of that tweet means when he says "god will repay for the death of every afghan child, ameen". Seems a tad radical to me.

I find it hard to believe he forgot how to speak English.
"Forgot" is different from "having trouble". That's one of the funny things about the English language -- sentences can end up having completely different meanings when you just change a couple of the words in them.

Let's look at that one again, shall we?

@ABalkhi I am still working to free all Guantanamo prisoners. God will repay for the death of every Afghan child, ameen!—Robert Bergdahl (@bobbergdahl)

It's called language attrition and, yes, it's definitely possible to forget your native language. I thought it took more like 10 years of immersion in another language and non-use of the native language to have total attrition, but it sounds like the soldier only has partial language attrition.

That is such a cop-out.
How is it a cop-out? I agree it might be false and not a fan of this, but I would be willing to bet that those that dislike President Obama would be saying he does not support our military and this guy by not doing everything he could to bring him home.

Look we got him back, and at this point it does not look like the current adminstration is going to do somethig to this "solider" (i think he is scum if he left his position), but that does not mean that they will not change direction on it either, once he gets home.

Yeah there is something weird about this situation. His old man should be interrogated as well.
interrogated for what?
I can't tell you......but us in the field know for what. Lets just say he should be looked at with a suspicious eye.

Let's see, the POW was a possible deserter with possible ties to the enemy, the five men traded for him were reportedly vicious enemy combatants responsible for thousands of deaths, and Obama broke the rules by making the decision without Congress.

I just knew that you would support this. Your turban is starting to show...

Well, he had regular Email contact with Taliban who had accurate knowledge of his traitor son back in 2012.

Serious question...does that break any laws?

Here's Bob Bergdahl tweeting the Taliban again, actually retweeting out their tweets::

so?
It just relates to the prior post about the father tweeting the Taliban. This is a second. I wonder what the father really thinks about America and its involvement in Afghanistan. And I wonder if he is sympathetic to the Taliban.

The reaction to this is really starting to piss me off.

I don't care if this guy screwed up by walking off the base. If he deserted, that's another matter, but somebody had better prove it. Otherwise II don't care. And I don't care if he loves the Taliban or his dad loves the Taliban or whatever. He's an American soldier. He was being held hostage. What the #### is wrong with you people??

That was a rhetorical question, because I know what's wrong. If this were anybody but Obama, the country would celebrate that we got one of ours back safely and be damned of the cost. But not with Obama. Whatever he does has got to be wrong.

His father is clearly sympathetic to the Taliban. I don't understand why that matters or is interesting in regards to the release of his son.

If you want to say it was stupid for the father to be at the white house under those circumstances... I agree. But it has nothing to do with the release of his son.

Tim,

If he walked off base then a number of his colleagues DIED trying to find him. Not to mention that if he walked off during his shift as has been reported he put people on base at risk since he was expected to be protecting them. On top of that, we've just released five guys who we know will be back trying to kill people as soon as they can. If you can't see why some people have concerns about all of that I can't help you understand it.

I just found it surprising, I did not realize that fact that he was sympathetic to the Taliban, you know, the people killing Americans, other Afghans, and who supported in every way possible the people who perpetrated the 9/11/01 attacks.

I guess it doesn't affect the decision to make the trade though.

So he may have been a deserter. And his father at minimum looks like a sympathizer of the terrorist movement. And we have a long standing policy of not trading POWs. And we sent 5 guys, a few of which were pretty bad dudes, for one soldier.

Do I have that much right?

Pretty sure they were ALL bad dudes. And the Taliban hand picked them. That should be of concern to anyone except Tim.

My father had to take a 2-week Spanish immersion course as part of his job (he works in the federal prison system), where they were supposed to speak nothing but Spanish, and he told me by the end of the training, he was thinking and dreaming in Spanish. Once he got back, he switched back to English easily enough, but I thought it was interesting.

Let's put it this way, it's been a long time since we traded 5 guys with this much blood on their hands.

Noori and Fazi alone have been involved in overseeing the massacre of thousands.

I will certainly grant you that, but no I would not be surprised.

OTOH I think perhaps it's starting to sound like the public should know what steps he has actually taken

The reaction to this is really starting to piss me off.

I don't care if this guy screwed up by walking off the base. If he deserted, that's another matter, but somebody had better prove it.
You think the guy shipping everything home, asking about penalties for his weapons coming up missing, having stated if it was boring he may desert, multiple eyewitnesses describing him sneaking off the base (crawling on stomach),etc etc etc isn't all pretty good indicator of his intentions to desert?

Is the thought that the father was a "sympathizer of the terrorist movement" from his tweets about Afghan children and re-tweeting that one Islamic dude?

If so, isn't it possible that he just objects to the US's "occupation" of Afghanistan? That's what I took from it.
