American Hustle (new David O. Russell film) (2 Viewers)

As for American Hustle, its ambition is not overwhelming, but it takes an interesting subject and very interesting characters and delivers 100 percent on what could be done with it in a very engaging, entertaining, interesting and truthful way. I would not put it in the legendary masterpiece category, but it doesn't fail on any level.
Oh, BS.

Everything about it was well done. Intriguing, well-written story, flawless, fun-to-watch acting, great set designs, good humor, good score/soundtrack. I can't think of a single thing bad about it. Is it best picture material? Not against this years competition. Was it the best that could be considered a comedy? I haven't seen better.
Finally watched it last night and agree with all this except I definitely think its Best Picture material. Ive now seen Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, Wolf of Wall Street, Captain Phillips, and Rush and I think American Hustle was the best so far.
I'd go with Dallas Buyers Club or 12 Years a Slave.
Im going to try and watch 12 Years before Sunday. I wouldnt be surprised in the least if I end up thinking its a better film than AH.

DBC would be my #2 right now behind AH I think. I loved it, and thought McConaughey was great in it as well, but I think Bale gives him a run for his money on Best Actor.

Actually as of now Id still say the best film of 2013 that Ive seen so far was The Place Beyond The Pines.
Interesting. I felt like I had seen three movies by the time TPBTP ended. The kid is awesome. The one from Lawless and the opening scene of Lincoln. My guess is he and Logan Lerman end up in competition for the next gen's DDL/Leo/etc. roles.

ETA: Dane DeHaan.
Oh, Pines definitely has 3 distinct acts so I can understand that feeling. I loved how the themes were connected between all the acts and characters though and cant think of 1 complaint I really had with it.

ETA: not sure if Dehaan really has that trajectory going for him, but yeah, he was really good in Pines, as well as one of the leads in the sci-fi from a couple years ago Chronicle.
Pines was interesting no doubt but I thought act III was a drag and became silly. I didn't find the circular nature of life aspect to be plausible under the conditions presented in the film.

It made no sense to me that Gosling's son, who grew up in a stable, loving, two parent home would suddenly go rogue under those circumstances.
That
A stable, loving, 2 parent home in which Eva Mendes never told her son about his real father. He was interested enough to find out things about him, and made his decisions accordingly once he did find out things in regard to his father. Im not saying I wouldve done the same things if I were in his situation, but I certainly found it plausible. Even moreso because he appeared like a loner in school based on how Cooper's son so easily manipulates him.
Didn't work for me and Bradley Cooper's son was completely annoying and not very convincing in general.

So Cooper's son in Pines is the equivalent of Sharon Stone in Casino or Jennifer Lawrence in Hustle basically? Fine by me.

Uhhhhh...

I think he's alone in calling it "absolutely awful" or whatever it was, but I think a lot in here had issues with the plot and pacing. To have American Hustle basically sweeping all the big categories is completely insane in my book.

To me it was awful because I didn't enjoy the movie due to what I felt was a boring story. It felt like a collection of good scenes but as a complete movie I felt it failed.

Decidedly meh. Amy Adams has no talent at all but her side boob.

What true story was this loosely based on?

Good, but not great, movie.

AA is hot but slacked on the accent at times. Bale was fantastic. Cooper seems like the same guy in every movie.

Really? I found her acting to be well below the level of the others in this movie. Her acting consisted of a ####ty british accent and trying to leverage her sex appeal. I remember her in julie/julia and how much she ruined those scenes to the point where I just skipped hers and went to the Childs scenes.

It was supposed to be a #####y British accent. That was one of the jokes...or at least people tell me it was one of the jokes.

One of the things I hated about Anchor Man was how bad Ron Burgundy was at reading the news.
I just couldn't get into that movie. Ron Burgundy was too unprofessional and lacked any significant knowledge to the point that it seemed implausible that he was the lead anchor for the top rated news show in a major metropolitan area. How about the weather guy? Either that role was way out of Carrell's range or the writers had no idea what a meteorologist actually is or does. Brick Tamland killed all the dramatic tension. May I recommend Broadcast News? That does a much better job at showing the high charged, competitive and fiercely genius nature of the TV news industry.

I thought it was her & Bale that just dominated the film. There were no bad performances, but to me those 2 were easily the best. As other have said, she was imitating a british accent within her character even so of course her accent was straight out the water closet.

I felt like this was Jackie Brown following Pulp Fiction... or Casino following GoodFellas. It was meant to be so much more, but it just doesn't hold up like true originals.
I'm a serious Pulp Fiction Fanboy but I think Jackie Brown is the best pure movie Tarantino has ever made. Wildly underrated in my opinion.

Finally got around to seeing American Hustle. Thought the acting was exceptional. Other than Daniel Day-Lewis, I'm not sure there's a better actor working today than Christian Bale. Too bad, he comes across like such an insufferable **** most of the time. One of the things I liked about Jennifer Lawrence in this film (besides the two obvious things) was how we're left to wonder at the end of the film if she have been more of a master manipulator than she appears to be. Perhaps she wasn't just blundering her way through everything but maybe she had a plan to herself all along. In that regard, I thought Lawrence did another terrific job. She's just a sensational actress in my opinion.

Very good film. David O'Russell is on a serious roll right now.

I agree with pretty much everything you said about AH, and also agree about Jackie Brown. IMO, its QT's best film and without a doubt his most underrated.

Wife did not like it much or thought it was just OK. I liked it a little better but Bradley Cooper is the one not on par with Bale, Adams, and Jennifer Lawrence who was the comic relief throughout the film. Well made, good use of the camera throughout, great plunging cleavage shots, close to the best we have seen from Bale IMO but Cooper just didn't do it for me. In general I haven't liked a lot of his more recent films like SLB which I thought he was just OK, and he gets too much credit for The Hangover films where he isn't all that funny, Limitless(meh), A-Team, a lot of his movies are pretty meh to me. Loved him in Wedding Crashers but he was cast perfectly as a ##### and that's pretty much what he is.

Jeremy Renner came across like a heavyweight in every scene he was in. Much better than the overrated Cooper.
He's one of those sneaky good actors. You don't think he's that good when you start watching a film he's in but by the time it's over he typically ends up being a lot better than you thought he'd be.

Jennifer Lawrence was completely underwhelming. Horrible, inconsistent accent. She looked like a 16 year old dolled up hooker, trying to play a 30 something housewife. She was miscast. Movie was waaaaaay too long, and the payoff was paltry.

You sure she was supposed to be a 30 something housewife?

At least. Hell, Bale's character looked mid 40's-50.
And there is no way a "wealthy" con artist marries someone much younger? I saw her as 20 something train wreck.

I didn't find her believable in her role. I like her as an actress, just not in this film. Someone like Heather Graham would have been a much better fit. I know David O. Russell loves her, but she is miscast in this film.

Except Hearher Graham is a ####ty actress.

It's impossible for Jennifer Lawrence to be bad in a film.

Even if the film stinks and she's awful she's still got that rack.
