worst movie of the year, LOTS of empty space in this show
Totally agree. They could have easily cut out 20 minutes from this film and no one would have noticed.

Amy Adams, Christian Bale, and Jeremy Renner were phenomenal in this movie. The innocence of Jeremy Renner was brilliant. Christian Bale may be one of the most underrated screen geniuses of this era, and Amy Adams completely out acted Jennifer Lawrence-who would have been better served by not being in this film at all.

Bradley Cooper was decent. His character was really undefined. At one point he seems like the fearless FBI agent and then he is the humble, lost son (which would have been believable if he was some local cop- not an FBI agent in the age of J Edgar Hoover), he is then portrayed as a sex-driven teenager after Amy Adams character (which brings out some coke induced rage that shows him assaulting another FBI agent-hence would have had him fired-so not believable), and then the tragic Greek hero brought back to earth by the lowly mere mortals.

Louis CK was good but underused.

Jennifer Lawrence brought absolutely nothing to this film other than her name. She is in probably 19.5 of the 20 minutes that could have been cut from the film. What a complete waste of resources. She hasn't produced a single decent performance since Winter's Bone. She'll have a tragic arch to her career because she offers nothing in the way of gripping drama. Once she bears her fruits to the screen, she'll be completely useless to the Hollywood elite.

The film was well directed, other than the waste of time given to Jennifer Lawrence's character. Russell would have been better off using a B lister in this role and saved money on the production budget. Her overacting was painful to watch.

The story was fantastic and offered fairness in the end to all characters. The cameo by Robert De Niro was excellent. It was good to see him play that scary tough guy instead of a shell of himself, mocking the characters that made him great. He was believable and frightening.
You know she just won an Oscar last year right?

You might not have liked Silver Lining Playbook but to say the garbage your saying you would think she was Lindsay Lohan or something.

Also the Young Adult movie franchise she is the star of (hunger games) has been extremely well reviewed so its not like she is putting out garbage just to make money. Some people just love to criticize others I guess.
Cool, and Crash won a ton of awards in 2005.

Jennifer Lawrence was garbage in this movie. Winter Bone was, by far, her best film. Sorry to pee on your popcorn, Sport.
great logic. Since one movie everyone hates won an Oscar all Oscar winners are now meaningless. Not saying she is Merryl Streep, but she is 22 and has won an Oscar for a well received role in a film after Winters Bone.

Just pointing out that the Oscars don't always get it right. I'm amazed at the amount of "football guys" that argue Sliver Linings Playbook was a great movie. I'd hate to see the collective thought around The Notebook :lmao:

Yeah, she is a horrible actress because she chose to star in one crappy horror movie when she was 20 years old. Sheesh, lay off her. Find me another under 25 hollywood actress that hasnt done a few horrible films?

Argue all you want about your subjective opinion about Silver Lining, if you came out of that saying that Lawrence was a horrible actress for playing that role, then you are in the extreme minority.

It is a decent movie in a year of bad movies. Not sure why the hate. A lot of good performances, just not a great story. But still entertaining and worth watching.

Silver Linings Playbook was a great film and Jennifer Lawrence was exceptional in it. These are facts and they cannot be disputed by any reasonable person.

One of my critiques of the film is that here character was really only necessary for one scene however her performance was top notch.

It's absolutely out of touch with reality to suggest that she doesn't have phenomenal acting chops.

Silver Linings Playbook was a great film and Jennifer Lawrence was exceptional in it. These are facts and they cannot be disputed by any reasonable person.

She was even better in Winter's Bone. She's an exceptionally good actress, and Russell is an exceptionally good director. Those two know a thing or two about good performances.

Don't get the hate for Lawrence. She wasn't the best part but did not take away at all. I thought she was pretty funny.

Clearly I don't get the tribal, collectivist approach to covering for an actress that was clearly out acted by Amy Adams and added nothing but painful, wasteful moments to an otherwise decent movie. It's so comical I can't help but laugh at the stupidity.

Rud knows things.
Incorrect. He has a Buffalo Sabres logo and advertises himself as a Bills fan. He may how who Scott Norwood is/was however his intellect on movies ranks up their with French occupation of Indochina post WWII.

Dazzling

This tiki character is a little much.
yeah, was going to reply to him, but I have stopped feeding trolls. Posts responding to people like that are a waste of time and completely circular.

And for the record, I might not have liked Lawrence's character in this movie too much but she was hysterical in some of those scenes. That scene where she blew the microwave and told Bale he should thank her for saving their nutrition was hilarious.

Liked this a lot but Lawrence spilling to the mobster was ridiculous and served the narrative poorly. Bale was a great con-man and never wanted to cross the mob. Would have been better if he had hatched the con without the being backed into a corner by Lawrence. He was seemingly plotting something already.

I don't agree with the people saying Bradley Cooper was a weak link. I thought he was great. Maybe I just have a crush on him or something.

I don't know if Renner was the best actor in the movie or the character with the best hair, but I will say this, there was something about his performance that made me sit up and pay attention everytime he was on the screen.

That's true of most, if not all, of his performances. He was totally captivating in The Hurt Locker and The Town. You know who has never once put that kind of spark in a performance? Leo.

This is where I'm at with it. It dragged... could have lost 10 minutes easy. Some good but not great performances. The story was interesting but a bit convoluted. My GF loves everyone in this film and was whining about the pacing about 2/3 of the way through. I found it difficult to disagree with her.

I'm sure some will get all defensive and attack with "sorry it's not (insert crappy cookie cutter pop-culture flick here) and you can't appreciate an 'artsy' film", but that couldn't be farther from the truth. I guess just given the hype I was a little let down.

My Rating: 7.5 out of 10. Between good and very good.... with flashes of brilliance.

I loved the film! First time I can remember when I walked out of the theater amazed! I also saw Gravity in 3D which was a spectacle in itself but for sheer quality and enjoyment of a film, American Hustle was great.

And on the same note I saw Walter Mitty the day before American Hustle and thought it was the worst movie I've ever seen in my life.

Absolutely. He, Christian Bale, and Amy Adams gave excellent performances. De Niro's albeit brief role was excellent. He really nailed even that extremely small part.

Lawrence was a dumpster fire.

You are a troll though. Serious question, did you watch Silver Lining? Watch this scene and tell me this isnt top notch acting.

A troll because I didn't like Jennifer Lawrence's acting job in this film. I posted my thoughts on the movie, others commented and attacked my post, and I'm the troll.

Priceless.

No, you're a troll because you're acting like anyone who thinks JL is a good actress is a moron. Like you have some special gift for judging talent that the rest of the world, including Hollywood, doesn't. People are assuming you're trolling because otherwise it comes off as you intentionally making yourself look like a tool.

Her Winter's Bone performance is perfect. The kind of breakout where you just assume she'll never go on to do anything else because she had to have just been some hill bumpkin playing herself. Like Penn as Spicoli. Then came Bad Boys. Anyway, she was 18. Compare and contrast that with Silver Linings Playbook, shot a little more than two years later. She's a game-day player.

Really? I think it was that I pointed out that I didn't like her performance, hence I was the one labeled as a "moron" for not liking her acting in this film.

saying you didn't like her performance in this film was fine, many others in here didn't like her performance. But then you stated that all her other films she was garbage in since Winters Bone and that was a troll attempt to incite some arguments and with that you succeeded do kudos to you.

So I'm not entitled to say I didn't like Silver Linings Playbook or consider her work overrated? I'm the one who should be subjected to other's attacks and then be labeled a "troll" or a "moron"? This is acceptable to you? You can't discuss and agree to disagree?

I get it. :deadhorse:

Outstanding movie, everything was right on point. The first 30 minutes was a bit odd and I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be watching. Once I fully realized that it was a comedy, I was dying. I need to see it again. Wife and I are now referring to our science oven. So many quotable scenes.

Never saw this as a comedy. It had some funny moments, mostly Jennifer Lawrence and Louis CK but this did not seem like a comedy at all.

Maybe I need to watch it again with that mindset.
