American Pickers (1 Viewer)

The show is mesmerizing...but mainly for the fact that these guys get so excited for finding an old action figure that they pick up for $3 and flip for $12. Other than the show itself I wonder how these guys actually make a living!

Think of seen every episode as I have it on my DVR. It has overtaken Pawn Stars IMO since and doesn't feel as setup. And I don't need to see the old man.

Pawn Stars has so much staged crap in it that it's becoming unwatchable.

I didnt like it at first but its grown on me. Still don't know how these guys made a living before the show. Their big scores are buying something for $100 and getting two for it. Between paying for gas, the vehicle, traveling expenses, the tattooed chick back at headquarters im surprised they're not walking from house to house.

why is either show on the history channel?
Wolf said he tried for 3 or 4 years pitching his idea and everyone told him that nobody would want to watch a show like that
that's not what i mean.i guess i'm just annoyed that shows like american pickers, axe dudes, pawn stars and ice road truckers are on what used to be a pretty good channel when you wanted to get away from those type shows.

I agree they should change the name of the channelETA: they do add historical facts on the show

It's okay. I watched about 3 or 4 episodes, but don't feel an incredible desire to watch more. Good, but not great.

Don't care much for Pawn Stars anymore.

The only History Channel show I really watch anymore is Modern Marvels.

The best? Really?

Pawn Stars is better.
 I stopped watching but just recently picked it up again. I had 12 episodes on the bedroom Tivo and I watched 10 of them in the last three nights. Apparently somebody told them to stop acting like such ##### and to not screw people because you can.

The Mole Man episode deserves a thread of its own. Holy ####.

It is pretty funny when they have a find and bring it to an appraisal expert who'll gushes something like "this is a phenomenal find, it's a one-of-a-kind item, incredibly valuable--you hit the home run. I think you could sell it for $275."

Began watching this show on Netflix streaming. I thought I would really like it, but it was uncomfortable to watch. They seem to take advantage of elderly people who have no idea of the value of what they have. And then they act like part of the joy in picking is meeting all these great people, when it is obvious they could really care less.

This show is lame, and really formulaic. There's less variety than on Pawn Stars, which suffers from the same general problem but which at least has some entertaining personalities.

These guys are just antiques dorks and we're watching them interact with hoarders and pay for old stuff. Yeah, sometimes there are interesting items or sellers, but this is basically the show. I hit the point of diminishing marginal returns after less than an hour.

I'm trying to figure out the difference between the people on this show and Hoarders

On this show, their piles of junk are fantastic... On Hoarders it's a sickness requiring psychiatry and a life change.

Man they screwed that guy in the house that looked like it was about to fall down. That dude was mentally ill or a mass murderer or something. I notice they didn't even show the value of the Harley helmet they paid a whole $10 for. I have a love/hate relationship with this show.

This show is pretty awesome. Wife and I love it. The old amusement park they went to and found the circus banners from ages ago and then had them appraised...awesome. They were worth so much more than they paid that they went back and gave the guy who sold them more of the profit or money which I thought was cool.

These guys are making money hand over fists and they sure are getting paid some scratch to do the show. There was a William Shatner episode a few weeks back that was pretty neat.

They do go wild though over simple everyday things or events. (In a very excited voice) "We went down there expecting to negotiate and that's what we did!" or "We found a good price and that's when we started combining items to buy!"

If you like Antiques Road Show you probably will like this show. It is American History to a large degree.

I don't see how these guys are taking advantage of anybody. Most of this stuff would eventually be sold in lots at an estate sale for less than what they are paying for it.

This is my take completely. To me this is part of the phenomenon around the country where everyone has too much stuff. Go to 2 garage sales around your home and you quickly realize that everyone has too much ####. And this glorification in my opinion fuels it even more. Kind of like antique road show. But I'm probably jaded....

I own 1/3 interest in several hundred storage units, so I have a warm spot in my heart for hoarders. But there is no way I could live with one.

i dig it. Its interesting to see that a lot of stuff Id think is junk is actually worth something. Hard to believe some of those signs and banners fetch the prices they do, especially the ones with holes and/or rust.

I guess theres collectors of pretty much anything old, who will pay for things even if they are just in "ok" shape.

Interesting phenomenon at work.

At the height of the housing bubble, we had "Flip This House", "Flip That House", "Design To Sell", and just about every show on HGTV geared toward upgrading & flipping real estate, plus the flipper shows on A&E, TLC, etc. 'Pergraniteel' was the buzzword... install Pergo floors, granite countertops, and stainless steel appliances for $10K and make $80K in profit on the flip.

Then the economy crashes and resale becomes chic. Vintage. Finding value in flipping old stuff instead of buying all new stuff. Pawn Stars. Hardcore Pawn. Pawn Queens. Auction Kings. Auction Hunters. American Pickers. The trend in home decor is re-using old furniture. Reclaiming mid-century modern. Etsy stores. This is not ikea. 3 potato 4. Every home on Apartment Therapy is decorating with vintage items. Thrift store finds.

There's even a new show called "Extreme Couponing". Looks like the new fad is in being thrifty.

I clicked on Apartment Therapy...gonna be pending some time there Great post, love when folks have hyperlinks to cool items that can actually enrich yor life. Very nice, the outside offices on the first page of that link was pretty amazing.

 I like it too. I think it's funny that in the earlier posts there were people arguing that they are ripping old people off, then others complaining that they get 'too excited' over buying an item that may only be worth maybe $50 in profit wondering how they make a living. It looks to me like a lot of Pawn Stars fans came on to say: I don't like AP, I like PS... and then they made up a cliche reason they don't like it.I could see how the 2 guys personalities might turn some people off. I think they are funny, but I could see them being annoying to some. Just saw an episode where Mike put down some serious jack on a Vincent motor, and some Easyrider art. The surfboard shop was cool too.
