Haven't done one of these in a while. Sirius/XM runs back the original Casey Kasem AT40 every Saturday. I have no idea what's coming, so I'll post them as they happen. Keep reaching for the stars!

40. "Victim Of Love" - Elton John

Hindsight's 20/20, but Lordy you can tell Elton is fried at this point.

39. "Street Life" - Crusaders f:Randy Crawford

The Crusaders were one of the more pop-leaning jazz groups of the 70s, but I doubt even they thought they'd catch lightening in a bottle like they did with this one. Randy Crawford has one of the sexiest lisps in pop music history. Love, love this record.

38. "Please Don't Leave" - Lauren Wood.

I have no recollection of this song. It's country-ish in the fashion of "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue" but it also has Michael ####### MacDonald singing harmony!

I started in radio in August of 1979.  The songs from that time period are permanently etched in my mind.  You will post about Robert John's Sad Eyes, My Sharona  by The Knack and Pop Musik by M.  Enjoy.

I was a SR in HS during this countdown. Damned near every song is an electrode wired into my hormones.

37. "Dream Police" - Cheap Trick

I wasn't the world's biggest Cheap Trick fan back in the day, but a lot of that is because of the yuppie/jocks who swore by this kind of music. Looking back, they were a fun band. Like

35. "You're Only Lonely" - JD Souther

This would be an Eagles knockoff, except the Eagles knocked him off considering he either wrote, helped write, or inspired most of their best records.

Albuquerque was a clueless cultural vacuum in the 80s. Some vapid entrepreneur decided to convert a giant department store into a mega disco - western section w mechanical bull; onyx fireplaced backgammon/cokesnorting lounge, rock club, every####inthang. They spent a fortune to hire Cheap Trick for the Grand Opening but forgot to build em a stage. Shoulda seen Rick looking around stunned as he mixed with customers while he played in his 1st floor-level performance since HS gym dances.

greatest moments of my life, yawpin along with Lowell George, Johndavid, Bonnie Raitt et al in Lowell's afterhour jams. Got actually mad - f'real sent a telegram - @ Bonnie when she copped out w "Runaway" but couldnt begrudge the Greatest Harmonizer of All Time his cheap lil success here.

Interlude: Counting down the #1 records of the 70s

"Let's Do It Again" - Staple Singers.

I'm not religious, but Mavis Staples may well be the sexiest singer of all time.

33. "No More Tears" - Donna Summer/Barbra Streisand

Summer got pigeon-holed (wonder why   ) as a disco singer when she was one of the most powerful vocalists of her day. She gives Streisand everything she wants here. I don't particularly like the song, but I will pimp Summer every chance I get. She's grossly underrated.

32. "Get It Right" - Gerry Rafferty

It's fine, but a "Baker Street" ripoff trying too hard to fit the sax part in.

30. "Spooky" - Atlanta Rhythm Section

This was a really good band. Little Feat-ish, IMO. I like the original recording better, but this is pretty good

35. "You're Only Lonely" - JD Souther

This would be an Eagles knockoff, except the Eagles knocked him off considering he either wrote, helped write, or inspired most of their best records.
IIRC recorded with Frey pre-Eagles, and co-wrote some of Henley's most successful solo stuff.

27, "Where Were You" - Lobo

This is one of the reasons people hate 70s music. It's not offensive, exactly, just boring as hell

26. "Lonesome Loser" - Little River Band

Love this band. Whoever that dude is that sings lead can sing, brothers & sisters

30. "Spooky" - Atlanta Rhythm Section

Golden Smog, a 1990s side project/supergroup of alt-country and alt-rock acts, always closed their live shows with "Spooky".  Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, Peter Louris from The Jayhawks, and Dan Murphy from Soul Asylum would have a little jam session/solo battle during the instrumental portion.

25. "Gotta Serve Somebody" - Bob Dylan

I'm not the world's biggest Dylan fan, but I like this one. He seems like he's actually - gasp - trying to mean what he sings for once in his life. Misguided or not, I'll give him that

24. "Broken Hearted Me" - Anne Murray

Good singer singing pablum. She sold a ton of records doing so, so go on with your bad self, Anne

"Until You Came Along" is one of the great barroom singalongs

Interlude: countdown of the #1 songs of the 70s

"Saturday Night" - Bay City Rollers

I remember "next Beatles" articles about this band. They had the fans, that's for sure

22. "I Know A Heartache When I See One" - Jennifer Warnes

Jesus........ I don't remember it being like this

20. "Ships" - Barry Manilow

Ok, I actually like Manilow but where the #### is the funk or kick ### rock? I know it was happening because I was there, but you losers weren't buying enough of it.

19. "My Sharona" - The Knack

Another song I resisted because of the HS clique who adopted it. I do remember reading some articles saying they were the next big thing.

18. "Hold On" - Ian Gomm

I thought this was way earlier in the decade, but I like it. Cool atmospherics and saxophone.

17 "Come To Me" - France Joli

Records like this are probably why a stadium full of racists set a bonfire in the old Comisky Park

16. "Loving, Touching, Squeezing" - Journey

I like Journey, but hate this song. The final 15 better be all P Funk songs

15. "Good Girls Don't" - The Knack

Oh for Christ's sake. This is not trending well. I like "My Sharona", but this song is lame beyond recall. Can I get an Anne Murray song to wipe the filth away?
