Analysis of Deuce McAllister's contract? (1 Viewer)

I know he signed a $50M extension last year with $13M in bonuses. Anyone have any details on what the bonuses are? His contract looks pretty thin on guaranteed money, which means taking Bush and dropping Deuce after this season is a real possibility.

Here's some info:

According to New Orleans Times-Picayune beat man Jeff Duncan, the $50.1 million contract makes McAllister is one of the three highest-paid running backs in the NFL.

...

The new deal includes $12.5 million in bonuses as well as several performance escalators that could sweeten the deal by as much as $3.1 million in the first three years.

The bonus payouts are in three installments: a $7 million signing bonus that he receives up front, a $4 million option bonus in 2006, and a $1.5 million roster bonus in 2006.

McAllister can earn $14.55 million during the first two years of the deal, $18.4 million over the first three, and $23.1 million over the first four.
Spreading out the bonus money like that over three seasons makes the cap hit easier to tolerate down the road.

Sheldon Mickles, of the Advocate, reports New Orleans Saints RB Deuce McAllister's $50.1 million contract included $12.5 million in bonuses, with a $7 million signing bonus, a $4 million option bonus in 2006 and a $1.5 million roster bonus due next March. Base salaries for the first five years of the deal are $600,000 (2005), $1.45 million (2006), $2.6 million (2007), $3.6 million (2008) and $5.2 million (2009). Roster bonuses of $1 million each are due in 2007 and 2008.

Okay if my understanding of the old CBA is correct...

That's $7M in signing bonuses spread out over 5 years. Option bonuses aren't spread out over the life of the contract.

He'll see all of his bonuses he signed for, since they'll likely pay him this year.

Then if they cut him next year, they'll have $4.2M worth of accelerated bonuses to account for. They can either take the entire thing in 2007, or spread it out over 2007-2008.

It's pretty cheap to get rid of him in 2007 IMO.

They wont need to get rid of him, they will trade that pick.

They are not dumb if Houston wanted nothing of bush they know he is a problem awaiting to wake up.

He will end up in tenessee, where they need him the most .

Yes ... except for the bolded part above. The only thing that's different from what you posted is that the Saints can cut/move McAllister early in 2007 and avoid being on the hook for the $1.5 million bonus due next March.

Good Info..

If Bush is 80% what he is suppose to be then Duece has to move on. They can pay a handful of running backs way less then what duece makes and they will be able to carry the ball 15 times up the middle to compliment Bash. The remainding $$ goes to 20 other positions of need.
