Android apps (3 Viewers)

Aaaannnndddd, we're off.
Good point.Goony feel free to list your criticisms in another thread, this one is for Android Apps.
And when have you ever worried about being an anchor in an Apple thread, GB?
With 30 phones sporting Android, there is bound to be "upgrade" issues which is really more up to the device manufacturer and carrier than it is to Google.
My first criticism would be the fact that Android is barely a year old, has only 20 handsets and it's OS updates are already buggy and face long delays depending on your device. It'll be fun to see what happens when there are hundreds of different handsets each with different capabilities and proprietary software built on top. Should be fun to see the delays and bugs when your model phone isn't top of the line anymore. You're right, you're at the mercy of each manufacturer to get the updates customized and available in a timely manner. They aren't doing so well now, what makes you think it'll get better as they saturate the market with hundreds different phones? This is exactly why Apple doesn't want Flash (or anyone else) to be middleware in iPhone app development. You've just proved me correct in two different debates, Cardy.

Why, this isn't an honest concern with Android? Card said himself that the issue is with the manufacturers customizing the updates, not with Google. Tell me where I'm wrong. At least I'm trying to spark discussion as opposed to the normal "Apple sucks" we get from the trolls in Apple threads.

Sounds like Apple is repeating the same mistake they did with the PC market. Tightly controlled operating system that can only run on Apple hardware while another company (Google this time) Spreads their operating system far and wide. Now if Apple only wants a small portion of handset sales then that is fine, I'm sure they will be able to keep a better handle on quality and integration than Google will with Android. It is only natural that you're going to have some issues when you're spread across multiple hardware developers and I'm sure Apple will jump all over them for it, but in the end it will be the same thing Apple will be the niche and Android will be the giant.

how do you down load the newest version
what device are you using?
droid eris
i ask because mytouch users, like me, are supposed to get a 2.1 upgrade sometime in the near future.
I use a smasung moment. upgrade came two days ago. so far i like it.

Definitely a risk, but the computer/tech world is a different place now. I'll give this some thought and post a more thorough reply later. 24 is on right now.

I liked the fact I could see that this thread was bumped, and know someone was talking about an app or the OS itself. This is not the thread for debating the merits of the Android OS or Android vs. iPhone - it's about the Apps! Hello McFly, take it somewhere else, please.

While it may be an honest concern with Android, this thread is called Android Apps. It'd be nice to keep it to that topic. Start your own thread, I'm not opposed to the topic and may even contribute, but not in this thread.

They shouldn't do that either. I know it's inevitable, and I rarely get going on this kinda stuff, but I was kinda hoping a little harsh criticism could steer this thread back on track. I should know better - :tfp:

It's practically considered to a sport around here to troll and derail every Apple thread, yet I pop into one of your precious Android threads and the masses immediately  :hot:   I fully expect you to swoop in to the rescue the next time one of your cronies decide to  an Apple thread, Maelstrom.

I'm cool like Fonzie, Joe. I'll take the discussion elsewhere.

Just got it up and running. Doing the update now. Before I did the update, I started looking at apps.

Seems like a lot of apps get way too much access to the phone. The ability to delete and modify my sd card? WTF? Personal info?

Go by the comments, not the permissions. Some of the permissions sound scarier than they really are. If they are using that API to place files on your SD card for saving etc. that's the encompassing permission for that.

I'll do my best (seriously, no joking.)-------------------------------------

Now I just need the update for my Backflip so I can use some of the cool apps I am reading about. I really like the phone, but it is on A1.5 still, and apps are starting to move beyond that now.

What exactly to Fake-call me & PF Voicemail do?
Fake Call Me is for if you're in a meeting or a conversation that you want to get out of. You can have your phone act like it is receiving a call so you can pretend that you have to take the important call you are getting. Not sure about PF Voicemail.

New droid user - how do I know which firmware version I am running? Just got my (sprint) phone yesterday.
Settings --> About Phone --> Firmware Version
Wow. 1.5. I just got this phone yesterday. Why is the firmware so old? Is it Sprint?
If it's a Hero, it should be updating soon...like today.http://www.zdnet.com/blog/gadgetreviews/sp...ndroid-21/14909

live blog report on the Android 2.2 announcement:

Android 2.2:

Vic Gundotra, vice president of engineering at the Mountain View online giant, takes the stage:

Says daily activations has now passed 100,000 a day.

This quarter, we are now second in smart phone sales, second only to RIM.

Passed a billion miles navigated with Android's turn-by-turn directions.

Crossed 50,000 applications on the Android platform.

As expected, Gundotra announces Android 2.2.

"We have big dreams for Android," he says.

Froyo, the name of the new version of the operating system, is much faster and includes 20 new features designed to help the enterprise, including support for Microsoft Exchange.

It also includes better data back up.

A new cloud-to-device messaging API allows a user looking up directions on a desktop browser to automatically send those results to their Android phone.

As rumored -- and widely hoped -- the Android will now be able to be used as a wireless modem.

"You should be able at the platform level to enable tethering," he said.

The future of Froyo:

A demo shows Android 2.2 runs faster than Eclair, the previous version, and the iPad.

"We think ... Froyo has the fastest mobile browser .. an accomplishment we are extremely proud of."

Promises to provide a sneak peak of something beyond Froyo, a taste of where they're going next. Shows a map that tilts with movement of the phone and, after an initial failure, an application that can use the phone's camera within the Web browser.

Shows off improved voice search capabilities, including "pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge at sunset."

"What's coming next is the ability to understand human intentions," Gundotra says.

Shows off Android's ability to do real time voice translation.

Announces, again as expected, Android support for Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 public beta.

"It turns out, on the Internet people use Flash," he says, an obvious dig at Steve Job's refusal to include Flash on Apple's iPad and iPhone.

Working with other companies "is much nicer than just saying no," he adds.

Starting with Froyo, the user can enable automatic updating, so that the latest versions of applications load automatically.

Promises a sneak peak of things coming to the Android marketplace.

Shows off the ability of applications and music downloaded from the Android marketplace to automatically load on the phone, without tethering to a computer.

"We discovered something really cool," he says. "It's called the Internet."

Says acquisition of Simplify Media will make all the music on your computer -- at least those songs not locked down by digital rights management -- available as a stream on the phone.

Shows off AdSense for Mobile Apps, including text and banner ads at the top of the smart phone screen, an expandable ad format that slides down the screen when clicked, a click-to-call ad, and an ad that automatically opens to a map with directions.

Anyone else with an issue with alarm clock not working? Any good alarm clock apps or anything else to fix that bug?
 It's inconsistent. Just plain doesn't go off some mornings. Not sure what is going on there.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1109First question would be: Do you use a task killer and is it possibly killing the alarm clock?

I haven't had an issue (knock on wood) but I don't use it too often. When I do set it I usually set a second one to go off a few minutes later just in case. Obviously from that link quite a few people have had issues and I'm sure there are other threads.

Can anyone recommend a good task/calendar app? I have a lot of tasks each day that have different priorities and fall in to different categories. On my BB, i just made a list but it was alphabetical by default so I could never organize it the way I wanted.

For tasks, I use Remember the Milk on my desktop, and Astrid as the app on my phone (Astrid links to RTM and it's free). I then use Pure Calendar widget as a full page on one screen, which links to Astrid and shows tasks on their due date.

I use LiveList for grocery type lists. For work/school tasks as well as a calendar i use Google Tasks & Google Calendar so I am able to add/check off tasks online as well as on my phone.
