Android apps (1 Viewer)

Hey, I noticed that Verizon charges like $3/month to use their visual voice mail.

Is there a free way to do this on my moto droid? I can't see what Verizon is offering that $3/month worth...

I hate this feature and would like to disable it, or replace it with something better. If they are charging me, I'm doubly pissed.

If you use Google Voice you can get it for free. I set it up for my voicemail to go to Google and they transcribe it and send me an email and a text message with the contents of the voicemail. I can even play the actual voice from the email I get.

Finally jumping on the android bandwagon (HTC Droid Incredible set to arrive this week)....thought I'd see if anyone else had some input.
That phone looks awesome, I'm curious to hear your review.Android I've found to be a pretty cool OS, though my experience in the mobile arena is very limited.
Today is day 3 with the incredible and I think I've finally got it customized to my liking. With 7 screens to fill, there is plenty of room to play around with.Pros: Lightening quick; sense UI; lots of storage space; extremely customizable

Cons: I'd like to say battery life, but I think its on par with this sort of device; screen hard to see in bright sunlight

Overall its an amazing device.

For those worried about the virtual keyboard, don't be. I wasn't sure how I would like it but turns out to be very nice, especially in landscape mode. I also installed swype and now that I have it, the keyboard is that much better. I don't think I could ever go back to tapping one letter at a time.

Hook a brotha up with the invite.

PM me your email address I think I have one

If anyone has another Google Voice invite to spare, please (pretty please) let me know.

......

I got the Opera Mini 5 Beta today and prefer it to any of the other browsers I've had on my Eris. The one thing it seems to be lacking that I miss is gestures. Firefox Mobile is still in the pre-alpha stage and even that isn't available for my phone yet.

My Incredible took an update this morning and I have no Sense UI after the reboot. The only thing left on any of the 7 main screens is apps and widgets I installed. Somebody Halp!

So I see there coming out with a FootballGuys app for the I-Phone. Will this app be available on droid's? Or is there another app coming out exclusively for droids?

According to Joe Bryant: "Android is definitely in the plans. Not sure of the time table but I'm a huge believer that you don't bet against Google."

I think it is just web pages that are (i)phone friendly, so they will either easily come out with a 'droid app or just have m.footballguys.com or something similar.

Guys check out the Skyfire browser. You can stream online videos to your phone.

Hulu was working the other day but hasn't in the past few days.

But I was on casttv.com during lunch today and was able to watch an episode of Curb streamed to my phone.

Don't know if it's been mentioned yet. Homerun Battle 3D is a pretty awesome game for Android. It's available for iPhone too.

Update to 2.1 for the Driod Eris is coming in the next couple of days. :wolf:

That said, with how long it took for 2.1 don't hold your breath on 2.2, with the phone phased out I can't see them doing any more major updates.

Got the download this morning for my Eris but it f’ed up my phone. It reset everything back to default. All of my contacts are gone, got the #s still but the names are gone just say unknown. I had to rest all of apps on the different pages. WTF

The names finally should up with the #s. but I had to add back the apps to the different screens, they way I had them. The screens went back to default, like it was newphone does seem faster with the download

Did you get the OTA update or did you install it from a file?

I used the OTA update and the same thing happened to me. It was a bit of a PITA, but not that big a deal, at least I didn't have to re-download all my apps. I used Google Nav this morning just to see how it was. :headbang:

Interesting. Must be something to do with going from 1.6 directly to 2.1. I know it handles resources differently with the applications, but not sure why it would basically reset your phone. It shoulda give you some type of warning before hand if it was going to do that. Sucks.

My wife went from 2.0 to 2.1 and this happened to her's too.

Open source sounds fun. :pics:

It certainly is. You should check it out sometime, I know it will be hard to shake your Stockholm syndrome, but once you do you will find the tech world is a much prettier place.
Pretty? Really? You guys can't even install a system upgrade without drama. Doesn't sound "pretty" to me. Sounds more "rustic". Like camping vs. staying in a 5-star hotel.
If you say so! With 30 phones sporting Android, there is bound to be "upgrade" issues which is really more up to the device manufacturer and carrier than it is to Google. Since you seem hellbent on carrying on this debate that you are losing and will continue to lose, I'd be happy to hear your criticisms of the Android OS. Please use as much detail as possible.

Aaaannnndddd, we're off.
Good point.Goony feel free to list your criticisms in another thread, this one is for Android Apps.
And when have you ever worried about being an anchor in an Apple thread, GB?

My first criticism would be the fact that Android is barely a year old, has only 20 handsets and it's OS updates are already buggy and face long delays depending on your device. It'll be fun to see what happens when there are hundreds of different handsets each with different capabilities and proprietary software built on top. Should be fun to see the delays and bugs when your model phone isn't top of the line anymore. You're right, you're at the mercy of each manufacturer to get the updates customized and available in a timely manner. They aren't doing so well now, what makes you think it'll get better as they saturate the market with hundreds different phones? This is exactly why Apple doesn't want Flash (or anyone else) to be middleware in iPhone app development. You've just proved me correct in two different debates, Cardy. :lmao:

Losing? I've been pwning the Googleboi's at every turn. Tell me how Android has overtaken Apple in market share again!
