Android apps (3 Viewers)

First, this is a very helpful thread. Just got my Droid X yesterday and already have downloaded some cool/helpful apps. But it would be an even more helpful thread if those who recommend apps could give a brief description of what they do and why they are recommended. Finally, does anyone have a recommendation for a music player that is better than the stock player? I'm talking about for music stored locally.Thanks.
btunes is good, looks a lot like iTouch/iPhone music player with many of the same features.

I just got an update for version 2.2 this morning on my Moto droid. Now Swype is no longer working. Seems like this happened when I first upgraded to 2.2.....I know I had to reinstall once before anyway. I've reinstalled Swype beta but it still doesn't work and I got a message that the Swype version wasn't configured for this device and would have limited functionality. Anyone else having Swype issues since the upgrade? Looks like Swype beta is closed. Is there anywhere else to get it now?
remove swype and the installer. go to swype, log in and reinstall.
That worked...Thanks!!

I keep forgetting about the voice command app. Truthfully, I'm rarely in a place where I can do voice texts and emails without someone overhearing. I may find more uses for it as time passes, but for the moment I haven't done much with it.

Anyone know when 2.2 is coming to the X?

No issues with it on my Eris
been reading the task killer app it not necessary, who knows :lmao: .
I've read that a few places too, but I know for a fact that a lot of apps don't shut down correctly so I find it hard to believe that them all running in the background doesn't do anything to your battery life.

Friend with an iphone got the ESPN FF app yesterday. I sent espn an email asking about the droid app and got the following response."ESPN will release a fantasy football application for Android this year. At this time, we do not have an exact release date. Please check back."Not the answer I was looking for but I'm hoping it will be befre the games actually starts since the app for the iPhone is out.
Is the iphone app any good?
I only played with it for a few minutes but it looked pretty good.

I know 2.2 is available if you look around on some of the message boards but don't think it has been pushed out yet though.

They don't run, they go into cache, from what I've read. You can check the app use by going: settings>about phone> battery useClick on the app and the CPU total should be close to the CPU foreground. There are bad apps that don't cache properly. I've found some that the total was 12min, but only 1-2min in the foreground.

I dont ask for much. thank god you can now "download all updates" instead of having to do 25 updates 1 at a time.

any word on a GSM Droid phone for Verizon

I think i'm leaning towards the Incredible but travel quite a bit overseas and can't live without email.

"Our Groceries" is a solid grocery app. Especially for married folks. Can sync grocery lists even across platforms
Downloaded this and used it today. Was a complete dog for me. Kept moving things to my purchased list on it's own and vice versa. When I was almost finished shopping I pulled it up and it had deleted all items but one from my list.Anyone use another grocery app?ETA: Answering my own question. Found an app called Smart Grocery. Has categories (dairy, produce, beverages, etc. and you can edit and/or add your own) and allows you to arrange the categories in order of the layout of where you shop. Looks much better.

Tasker. This is the one app every user should have. There is a learning curve but the possibilties are endless.

Very cool automation app.

App review, with video. Notes "that m.espn.com offers similar functionality. You can also wait on third-party solutions set to debut this week."
I have the app and m.espn.com open right now. They might offer some similiar functionality, but the app is much faster (more options from the main screen). I'm surf controlled from the espn site at work, so the app is cruicial to me as all 4 of my leagues are on espn....and Iwant to be able to pick up free agents and adjust my starters (when I'm at the saints games) as fast as possible.

Angry Birds is almost identical to an addictive time-waster that was posted in the FFA a while back. (Probably a few years ago.) The differences are that it throws birds instead of rocks, and it uses a slingshot instead of catapult. (The slingshot idea works well with the touch screen.)

When I got the update the other day, somebody called me while it was installing, screwing up the install, and I got nothing but force stops when it tried to load the OS. I had to do a hard reset.

That isn't the problem. The problem is I lost my Swype! I tried re-installing it, but it won't take over as my method of text input. (Yes, the box is checked)

Any ideas? I sure hope so, cuz I'm hating typing anything on the standard input.

Same problem here. I have tried uninstalling both swype and the swype installer and then bringing them both back in, no luck after doing this twice. I can set swype to be my default but it only works as a keyboard, one letter at a time, and does not recognize my attempt to swype a word.

You may have done this but just reiterating. Go to Manage Apps, uninstall both swype and swype installer. Go to swype.com using the link from beta invite email. If you don't have it, go to swype, login and request the invite email again. Use that link to log in and download the installer.

This is the process swype recommends:

Go to Settings -> Language & Keyboard and make sure that Swype is UNCHECKED

Uninstall both Swype AND SwypeInstaller from your device by going to Settings -> Applications finding Swype and SwypeInstaller in the application list, selecting each and clicking the UNINSTALL button.

Uninstall any 3rd party task-managers, such as Advanced Task Killer. You'll be able to safely reinstall any such apps after Swype is successfully installed.

Remove all widgets from your homescreen.

Download and install the SwypeInstaller but DO NOT LOG IN TO INSTALL SWYPE

Reboot your device.

When your device is done rebooting, launch SwypeInstaller and complete the Swype installation process.
