Never thought I'd unleash all that... I really switched due to the device. The iPhone screen is just too small for me compared to some of the other phones out there. The fact that the Galaxy 5S is waterproof and has a removable battery titled me in its direction. Complaints that it wasn't a "big enough" upgrade over prior versions didn't really matter to me since it's all new to me.
Don't sweat it. The hardcore Android nerds are worse than iNerds sometimes. Not everyone needs to root or flash roms or whatever they think makes a "true experience."

It's going to be a fine phone and I will probably be upgrading my S3 for it soon. I'm eligible now but want to wait a bit to see if there is a drop in price or more details about a prime edition that was rumored.
The S5 will be fine. Until the S6 later this year. Then the S7 not long after.

Samsung devices lose value under contract in a hurry.

I understand manufacturers not allowing MicroSD cards so they can sell you a more expensive version of the phone. I don't like it, but at least I can understand that from a business standpoint they think they'll make more money by selling the 32gb version of the phone for $100 more than they'll lose by people going to a different phone with MicroSD.

However, what I don't understand is why some of these manufacturers refuse to allow removable batteries. They'd sell more phones (I'd buy a Nexus 5 in an instant if it had a removable battery and I don't think I'm alone on that), and if anything they'd probably make a little extra cash selling their overpriced batteries in the Verizon/AT&T stores. What the heck is the logic in making the battery inaccessible and driving away customers? A $600 phone for $349 is worth $ 0 to me when I can't turn it on because the battery is dead, or when I have to lug along some big brick to charge it on the go.

Just got the Galaxy S5 and moving into the Android space from iOS.
What made you switch?
He wanted a better mobile experience?
He bought a Samsung
Ummm yeah thats what he said.
You said he wanted a better mobile experience.
And he got one by switching from Apple to Android. Why are you having such a hard time with this?
the nerds are trying to say it's not really an android experience if you aren't on a true native android device....God forbid
What I'm saying the difference is between an iPhone and the many Android devices: one device get's the latest OS, while many devices don't. That's not getting the full value, if say you're still on 4.2.

The RazorM when first shipped had Jelly Bean before the GS3.
Value has nothing to do with it. Let me put this as plain as I can.

HES GETTING A BETTER MOBILE EXPERIENCE BY SWITCHING FROM APPLE TO ANDROID, REGARDLESS OF WHICH ANDROID VERSION HES ON WITH HIS S5.

I'm staying one model behind. In a few weeks I'll pick up an S4 on eBay and sell my S3 to cover most of the cost, like I did when I bought my S3 and sold my S2.

Total cost to upgrade will be around $100 and I'm not tied to a contract.
FYI the Nexus 5 is $349 from the google play store - no contract

That's what makes the phone so amazing. $600+ phone quality, 300$ price tag

Google eats money on these phones.. no reason at ALL to stay "behind"
I get that, But I like/want the removable battery and SD card slot to add memory....so the Nexus isnt right for me. I can get an OEM extra battery for my Samsung on eBay for $9 shipped. If Im somewhere and my battery goes dead, I can just swap out the dead one for a charged one and not have to worry about it.

It's true. Anybody opting for old spec at that price is an idiot. Especially since it will stop at 4.4.

Honestly I'm pretty sure (and I'm not alone on this) that the main reason is a business model where the manufacturer wants you to upgrade the entire phone when the battery goes wonky, rather than pay for an overpriced battery. Far more profit on a $600 purchase vs a $60 one, regardless of the margin. Also, they probably don't lose that much on the spare battery market as you might think, as people will instead invest in countless overpriced connectors (which happen to be proprietary, in the case of Apple) and other peripherals.

Call em what you want, theres tons of em out there, and far be it from me to tell them "Hey, dont buy my phone because theres better spec phones out there for less money". My mission is to sell it for as much as I can and upgrade to an S4.

Well, you're going to sell old spec to buy not as old spec, during maybe at that time a shiny new S device will be launched that you can get under a 2 year contract for around 400 bucks. And you're judging "better mobile experience". Sheesh.

I dont understand this no contract stuff. You have to pay for service anyways so what do you save?

I got my s3 on black friday from sprint a year and a half ago for $50.

Wait....do people buy phones at retail price? I thought everybody just did the contract renewal discount price...

Isn't Samsung known as cheap plastic made for teenagers?
Not at all

It's known as the biggest/best Android phone maker, giving Apple a run for its money in the mobile market

Samsung upped their game across all their products around 2011
I'm considering jumping to Windows or Android so I'm doing some research, and I'm seeing a lot of the cheap, plastic talk with Samsung. I really just need to see for myself.
If you are an iPhone user who is accustomed to its metalized chassis, then any Android phone may seem like that to you. Apple is known for its build quality. I can't stand their software though

My no contract prepaid plan costs me $64 a month (total cost, it never changes) for AT&T. If I sign up for a 2 year contract, it will cost me $80 a month for the same plan. I switched back in November before they lowered the price of their plans, and now they have a no contract postpaid plan for $65/month (plus fees), but it would cost me $36 activation fee to go that route, so it makes no sense to do it.

I don't like being tied to a contract because if I find a better plan or need to change my plan or carrier I can do it with no hassle.

ETA: when I switched to non contract back in Nov, it saved me $45 a month on my plan ($540 per year), so it was a no brainer and made sense.

When you get a phone on contract for a great "deal", you PAY FULL PRICE FOR YOUR PHONE and thensome..

It'd "hidden" into your monthly fee... If if you pay 80 a month, about 25$ or so of that goes towards paying off your phone (you just dont know it)

Off contract plans save you money over the long haul and you can jump around between carriers w no hassle and always get the best deal.

what?my plan was going to be the same price whether I bought the phone outright or got it on contract....The thing that changes is the amount of crap they give you...unlimited data etc etc

Chances are if you're doing this, you're being taken. Its like 95% of the time a bad deal for the consumer.

Report to the Ting/MVNO thread and start reading imo

My favirote apps in no order:

Twitter - good for keeping up with sports/news

Cozi - great for shopping lists. my wife will put stuff on there for me to grab on my way home from work

Quiz Up - great way to pass some time and learn a thing or 2

Candy Crush - another good time waster

Google Calendar - nice way to sync my wife's and i's calendar so we can track what is happening

Pocket Casts - great for downloading and listening to podcasts. believe it was $3 when i got it a few months ago

Run Keeper - works with my Pebble watch which is a bonus

theScore - like this better than ESPN ScoreCenter. gives you the lines and o/u and loads much faster.

:lmao: JFC, didn't realize this was such Serious Business.

So back on topic, what are your three favorite android apps?
I moved over from iPhone to Note 3 a few months ago. Some apps I found I needed/liked:

Google Voice - I was bummed to find out Verizon charges for visual voicemail on Android, and the standard voicemail where you need to call in to access is a huge step back. Set up auto forward to your GV # and then you can set it up to integrate with the phone app to act more like what you're used to from iPhone with the added functionality of being able to read msg transcriptions.

Screen Adjuster - don't know if it's the same with the S5, but the Note's screen is so nice and bright that the lowest brightness setting is too bright at night in bed if your SO is trying to sleep. Screen Adjuster lets you set it dimmer.

Pocket Casts - agree with MattFancy above. I was using Downcasts on iPhone and was disappointed with the other options on Android until I tried this one. Like it a lot.

Timely - I didn't like the Android clock as much as the iPhone's. I like this one much more than either. Better widget and very nice alarm.

SwiftKey - my favorite keyboard

FoxFi - pretty easy to set up a hotspot without paying for it through Verizon

Hangouts - I only use this as a FaceTime replacement with my wife & daughter who are still on iPhone. Picture isn't as good, but allows more than two people at same time.

Dolphin Browser - I usually just use Chrome, but there are some things about this browser that I like better

Nova Launcher

So far for me:

Swype is the shizz for typing

Carbon for twitter

Our Groceries for making shopping lists

Sadly, my most-used app is Clash of Clans :bag:

Apparently it's too much. I got 2 phones for 99 total shrug but that is for a different thread

Swype has been a big letdown for me. A typical experience for me is I'll have a sentence with 8 words and it will fly through the common words and then it'll screw up a name and it will take me as long to fix that one error as the time I saved on the common words. I've been using it for well over a month and still haven't mastered when to swipe vs. peck. It's better than the stock keyboard, but not to the ">>>>>>>>>>>>>" level that the FFA would have suggested.

Love Google Keep app.

For those that use Pocket Casts, does it have a 30 sec or 1 minute FF button? I'm using DoggCatcher for podcasts and it's pretty good, but I still miss the ability to forward through commercials.
