Disagree. Steve Carell has primarily been a broad, silly performer influenced by broad, silly performers. Early 90s Second City people like Carell grew up watching Mel Brooks, Carol Burnett, SNL, SCTV, and ZAZ. Carell's Daily Show persona wasn't the attacker, but the buffoon. Carell went out of his way to be in the movie version of Get Smart. This is right in his wheelhouse.I get the feeling that Steve was talked into this by Mrs. Carrell
I watched a handful. I appreciate the effort, but I felt like the there were too many swings and misses // not enough hits. I really did appreciate the suspicious mole bit though, that one got me.I know everyone keeps saying Naked Gun, but it's actually more like Police Squad. I know that's splitting hairs, but PS was the TV show. It had similar running gags and odd humor. And some was swing and miss, but a lot were home runs. I like this show a lot. Yeah, some jokes fall flat, but there are a bunch that I find myself belly laughing at. I don't think they're going for an Emmy win with this show. I think they know their target and they're hitting it just fine. I'm a fan.
I'm not sure I'd put it at that average of 1 out of 6. But I see your point. I do think that the fact it's on TBS and not NBC will be the thing that keeps it around though. And like I said, I enjoy it enough to keep watching. But it could very well go the same route of Police Squad. I believe that only lasted like 6 episodes before it was canned.I watched a handful. I just don't think a show nailing one out of every six or seven gags is good enough.
Pretty sure they're already working on season 2. But the commericial free marathon of season 1 makes me think TBS doesn't have a lot behind it (didn't even try and sell many ads for it).I'm not sure I'd put it at that average of 1 out of 6. The ads are pretty much in the shows though, right? I've only watched the first 3 but it was like Ford, Snickers and something else. Season 2 premieres Monday. Ten-week run. Different episodes than the ones from the marathon.I'm not sure I'd put it at that average of 1 out of 6. But I see your point. Yeah, they did a lot of product placement. The Ford gag from the pilot - Angie and Geils were driving a different Ford in every cut, a deliberate continuity nightmare - was IMO really well done.TBS picked up 10 more episodes before airing the the first 10. The marathon drew a lot of attention to the series, and TBS ran a ton of cross-promotion during it. They value this property highly. The ads are pretty much in the shows though, right? Yeah, I didn't mean it would last as long as PS in the sense of number of episodes. As far as basic cable comedy shows go, I think this one will do just fine. That's BTO. They were Canada's answer to ELP. Their biggest hit was TCB. That was how we talked in the 70s. We didn't have a moment to spare.Unapologetically broad and silly, kinda like if ZAZ went after the CSI/L&O ilk of police procedurals. I dug it, but it's not for the cynical. I don't expect this board to like it much.

The part IMO you have nailed is a show like this needs to be on cable (or a streaming service) to have a long run. Put it on FOX or NBC in prime time and it lasts maybe 6-10 weeks. But put it on a channel that can nurture a smaller but passionate audience and it could have a long run.Yeah, I didn't mean it would last as long as PS in the sense of number of episodes. Definitely in the DNA. Fans of Angie Tribeca should track down Sledge episodes.Sledge Hammer!

You can watch them all here:Blackdot because we're just getting season 1 now in Canada (and it's not being marathoned), so I've only seen the first two.
