Another killing at the hands of the Police (1 Viewer)

Okay, I get all that.  And I definitely agree with the last sentence.  There are no magical words that are going to suddenly make everything better.

My problem is that this president actively makes everything worse.  I bumped into one of my colleagues today who I hadn't seen in a long time, and naturally we got to talking about covid-19 and how none of this is really Trump's fault in some existential sense, but his active involvement made the situation worse.  If he had sat back and done nothing -- go play golf -- while the experts did their job, we would be marginally better off than we are today.

This is the same thing.  Doing nothing would be better than making inflammatory tweets and berating governors for not being militaristic enough.  I know you and I agree on the general contours of these riots, but it just seems to me that Trump is not at all helpful here.  He certainly doesn't have the political capital to do what Bush did, and that's really all on him.
Hey man, try to appreciate the situation I'm in - trying to point out the absurdities I see in both Trump and his adversaries.

I’ve only heard him read from the Bible once, and it was horribly awkward (the “two corinthians” moment at Liberty University. I definitely can’t imagine him doing what you reference.

But, yeah, I was just trying to make a joke about his favorite book being the shortest one, at around 300 words total.
Favorite verse?  Yes I have a  favorite verse: Jesus wept.

Just got banned, huh?
Maybe he can't read very well?

My first exposure to ANTIFA came after Charlottesville when I heard them described as anti-Nazi. I fully support that idea of course, but a year or so later when they assaulted journalist Andy Ngo and a bunch of other people (there's a thread about it somewhere, but here's a link: https://reason.com/2019/06/29/antifa-andy-ngo-mob-milkshake-violence/) my support dropped to zero. I'm not a fan of Mr. Ngo, but violence like that is totally unacceptable, no matter what the "cause".

I'm not a fan of the Democratic Party, but I'm a fairly staunch lefty and have been vociferous and adamant about "my side" not adopting the same tactics of those I oppose. You could see a lot of mis/disinformation tactics being used during the Democratic primary which was really disheartening but totally predictable. "The end justifies the means" is the slipperiest of slopes and how we ended up with Trump. If the left adopts the same ideology then the distinction becomes meaningless in my opinion and I'm out.

I get that too.  It's kind of strange that this is an Orange Man Bad situation when the Governor of Minnesota, Mayor of Minneapolis, and City Council of Minneapolis are all members of the other party.  It's almost as if neither party really cares about this issue . . .

I'm just confused what people want Trump to do other than say the right words.

And if that's all they want, I think that's naive. Because I believe.he's both incapable of doing so and that it wouldn't matter if he was because the rioters wouldn't listen. They're not even listening to the people you'd normally think they'd respect.
:goodposting:

CNN is reporting that, according to close aides,  Trump personally ordered the tear gassing of the peaceful protesters because he was embarrassed by reports that he hid in the bunker last night and he thought this would make him look tough.
Oh god,I thought those suspicions were a bridge too far but there's just no bottom with this guy (if true).

And the Hennepin County Attorney, and Hennepin County Commissioners, and the Attorney General and...

And those of you who think this sort of thing won’t help Trump I can only point you to American history: Nixon demanded law and order. As the protests continued, Nixon threatened to send out the military. Then at Kent State University national guardsmen actually fired into a peaceful crowd and killed 4 students. Nixon made excuses and refused to prosecute the soldiers and defended them. The nation was disgusted and shocked...AND THEN RE-ELECTED NIXON IN A HUGE LANDSLIDE.
These are not facts that please me. They suggest an America exists out there which is not one that I enjoy believing in. But facts are facts. Have we matured as a nation since those days? Guess we’ll find out....
I am worried this will help Trump as well.  Too many Dems not coming out and condemning rioting might swing the independents toward Trump.

Oh come on, just blame it all on Trump. It doesn’t matter that all of Minnesota is led by liberals and they allowed criminals to torch their police departments and escalate this to levels we’ve never seem. Let’s just all Trump tantrum and keep it real in here.

I often cry about bad guys getting punished if its a way to get a dig at someone I don't like too. Must suck being dishonest trash.
Great. Sorry you can't write well either, but did you read what I wrote about Antifa or are you just here to call people dishonest trash with no regard to what they say?

I realize nuance is, well, nuanced, but we can take it slow.

There's plenty of blame to go around, but don't forget the Union Chief, chief.

Typical lame excuse for poorly run liberal state, about what I expected. Nice “but Trump” work there.
No doubt, governors and mayors need to get their collective #### together in terms of law enforcement and criminal justice reform. State legislators as well.

The bunker thing was bad, this is worse. Now he looks both weak and petulant.

Honest question though, do people pose for pictures with their Bibles?  Is that a thing?  Or is this akin to Trump hugging the flag?

This is basically what I immediately thought.  What other reason did he have to go to that church other than to show those who are making fun of him for hiding in a bunker that he is still in control and has the power to do what he wants when he wants.

Ouch, the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of which the church that Trump used for his photo op is a part just expressly rebuked Trump and his message as antithetical to the teachings of Jesus.
Lets here people now rip her too as despicable...
