Another school shooting (4 Viewers)

I feel horrible for all the victims and their families, and (if he had nothing to do with this) I feel horrible for Ryan Lanza.

Yesterday, he was a 24 year old guy who was probably dealing with typical 24 year old problems.

Today, he discovered his father was murdered, his mother was murdered, his younger brother is dead, his younger brother committed one of the most notorious massacres in American history, and just to pile-on what must have been one of the worst days ever -- the media pulls another Richard Jewell and in a rush to judgment reports him as the killer. I couldn't imagine what that guy is going through.

If you think Mike Huckabee's comments are awful, do yourself a favor and stay away from the Westboro Baptist church's comments. They're already posting on twitter about protesting funerals related to this.
Aside from the Westboro people themselves I don't think anybody listens to what they say. Unfortunately there are plenty of people that agree with Huckabee.
It would be nice to have a big, national, cathartic ###-whooping of all of them though. They just beg for it.

Ryan Lanza, 24, brother of gunman Adam Lanza, 20, tells authorities that his younger brother is autistic, or has Asperger syndrome and a "personality disorder." Neighbors described the younger man to ABC as "odd" and displaying characteristics associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
OK, pet peeve here:I have known children who are autistic, and I have known children with Aspergers (though not adults) and it is NOT the same thing. I understand that there is a tendency nowadays to link all such behavior under the "autistic" umbrella, but I suspect this is being done at least somewhat for insurance purposes. Kids that in my youth were termed "hyperactive" and treated with ritalin are now diagnosed as having Aspergers- but they don't suffer from the sort of autism you would associate with Rain Man or special ed classes.
TimKids with Aspergers certainly don't present like Rain Man. But my son has Aspergers and he has been in special ed classes for the majority of his years in school. Kids with Aspergers are typically more high functioning than kids higher up on the Autism spectrum. However they do share symptoms. Difficulty with socialization and obsessive compulsive behavior.

CNN has dr drew on and I'm not reading all these pages. I know most of what happened but can anybody gimme a rundown of Facts.
Know one knows the facts. Tune in to the news tomorrow after the 3rd presser from law enforcement.
Yeah, right now it is speculation, shrinks making diagnoses off of that speculation and reporters interviewing children that just lived through the slaughter of their classmates. It's not journalism or news. It is profiteering yellow journalism.

His father is now reported alive, but yeah. And if you look at his twitter feed, apparently stuff wasn't going real well for him before all this.

This is one of these stories that just keeps getting worse and worse. The number of dead, the idea of what went on is more horrific than my brain can process. The next few days, weeks are going to be filled with pictures of these kids, these babies, and their families' stories and videos about them and their Christmas and its going to be gut-wrenchingly awful. I feel guilty for wanting to block all that out (I will have to for my young kids) for these kids memories, but I don't know how I'm going to see these kids and their grieving families without breaking down. Sorry if that is incoherent rambling, but I can't imagine these families and how they will go on.
I tear up just thinking about it.

CNN just interviewed a kid that said there was "bloody goo goo all over the floor". Can we get a list of every station that interviewed kids so we can get a boycott going? This is pathetic.
Pretty sure it's all of them.
You call for boycott but I feel like they should be choked out in public. Maybe not to death but definitely a wake up call. There is absolutely no reason to interview 5 - 10 year old kids on the same day of the shooting. The fact that they have to constantly tell us that the parent allowed us is kind of there way of saying "yeah we are scumbags but we got permission". Which brings me to the parents. Maybe because I don't have a dog in this fight but if some guy from CNN tried to stick a mic in my son or daughter's face today I would kick the #### out of them with no remorse. What are these parents thinking

That wasn't the correct Ryan Lanza Twitter account. Another #### up job by the media rushing to be first.

Several of the people in my family, including me, have been diagnosed with varying degrees of "autism-spectrum" issues. It never ceases to amaze me how narrow peoples' thinking is with respect to the term autism.
My mother (long-time special ed teacher) says that she believes I'd be "on the spectrum" if I were tested today. She thinks she'd have been "on the spectrum" as well. Things are different today than they were even 20 years ago - I'm 25 now. People's mindsets will stop being so narrow after awhile. I guess what I'm trying to say is - it takes time for people to understand.

The 'if he had nothing to do with this' is still in the air for me....his tweets about not wanted to go on, etc were from him. Could be wrong....

Not going to defend Huckabee statement because I am an agnostic myself, but that headline is totally out of context.
We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we’ve systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability?
Whew, looks like that was taken completely out of context.

I used to respect Huckabee even though I disagreed with almost everything he stood for. Nothing but scorn and disgust for this media bozo now.

Yes. People should lose their jobs over this.
This is pretty awful.
I am not defending the media but don't they need parents approval....
Weren't there kids being interviewed before the parents could have possibly even made it to the scene to be reunited? I am not sure they need parental approval. We had the reporters with cameras outside of our school before and they interviewed minors with no parental consent. Regardless, just because a parent will consent that doesn't make it ethical journalism.

Agreed. Didn't have the same positions as him most of the time, but he seemed genuine. Now he is another right wing mouthpiece

Unfortunately, there is nothing anyone can do to stop these kinds of tragedies. You can't stop crazy, it ALWAYS finds a way.

What a sad, sad day. :(

Times like this make me actually wish there was a God because then that would mean there is a hell for sub-humans like this to go.

I love how the NRA is saying they are still preparing a statement. You just know they're carefully weaving some "protect our rights" bull#### into whatever canned condolences message they put out.

Exactly, I mean, right now they are a number. The pictures of the scene around the school on all the news sites of terrified parents and kids who have gotten out are making me a wreck as it is. After everyone has been notified and the police begin releasing names, ages and the pictures and videos start pouring out....oh Dear God. I know there will be the occasional hero story to bring a touch of light to this blackness, but I might need to drink myself into a coma.

America is a breeding ground for violence. This isn't an unavoidable natural genetic defect. It can be prevented and many countries are doing a great job at preventing violent crimes.

I could be wrong, but even police questioning/interviewing children without parent approval doesn't sound legal to me.

Can someone link to an updated timeline of what occurred and when? Since there was so much incorrect info wrong, Id like to see what we know now end to end. TIA

I was walking in Isla Vista when David Attias drove his car through a crowd of people, killing four of them. Considering how many people were out that night (any weekend night and especially Halloween), I don't know how the body count wasn't higher. Your statement is sad but true.

IDK, I meant to say reporters. I edited my statement. I am no legal expert here.

So parents divorce, kid has trouble with mom, thinks mom loves the students more than him....

This is totally my own armchair opinion

Heard on CNN earlier that the incident lasted for more than 20mins? There may be criticism of the response that comes out of this.

Of course there will be. Both Obama and the NRA should have been first responders inside of 5 mins. :wall:

That seems fast to me. 1-3 minutes to call 911 and get enough facts out that dispatch sends police. 3-5 minutes for police to arrive. Another 3 or 4 minutes for the cops to figure out who is in charge and what protocol is. That's already 9-12 minutes of your time line before the police can think about actually doing anything. 10 minutes from there for the situation to be over seems fast.

Hard to say. Seems longer than other shootings that have occurred in less secure places like the strip mall in AZ or the theater in CO.

I am not even sure how someone could be diagnosed with aspbergers and a personality disorder. I believe a condition of personality disorder is that is no other mental issue that is playing a more prevalent role. Many of the traits of personality disorder are common in aspbergers and it seems impossible to make this double diagnosis. I am not a psychologist though.

China has very low rates if I recall. They are also very much for the death penalty I believe. I recall reading a story where a thief was given the death penalty outside the house he had robbed.
