Another school shooting (1 Viewer)

Yeah he is really weird.....Said he didn't think the gunman killed himself though but won't know until tomorrow.
This is getting really weird. Explaining how his name was detailed? Joking that this is only his 2nd press conference. That they didn't set up a tent but this magnificent thing with velcro.

This cat is hamming it up at a press conference?

"Put this in your calendar. In my 33 year career it's only my second press conference." *weird chuckle*

WTF???

I think you guys are being a bit rough. Joking here and there seems simply a defense mechanism to allow this guy to cope, which he is visibly doing poorly with what he just went through.

I would imagine that the medical examiners is more skilled in determining cause of death than he is at doing press conferences.

I know, I think we are all coping with it differently. It just throws us off a bit when this guy is joking about it. I don't think anyone is saying he is actively laughing at the situation but this shows why you need your leaders to exude a silent confidence. I'd probably do similar things but I would hope someone would talk to me just to keep responses short and sweet. Don't need to know the origins of your last name or what kind of tent was set up.

"Yeah doc, that's what we're all concerned with"
He is woefully unprepared for the magnitude of the task he has been presented with. I'm willing to cut him a HUGE amount of slack.
Yeah me too. Considering the guy probably worked through the night as well. Let's also remember someone who does this type of work probably isn't the personality that makes for a savvy press conference or interview.

Still can't believe some reporter asked him what the kids were wearing. He was like " um, cute kid stuff".

Can't imagine getting a big question in on national TV as a reporter (which is probably a big deal in the reporter world) and asking that whopper of a question.

I wasn't sure if he was nervous or enjoying the moment but yea cutting him some slack is a good idea
I don't think anyone isn't cutting him some slack, just pointing out the inherent awkwardness. Heck, we are displaying our own coping mechanism by talking about this, thus, taking our minds off of the tragedy if only for a second.

I tend to use sarcasm as a coping mechanism and got some odd shakes of the head during my delivery. After experiencing something so tragic, I'm willing to give him a lot of slack.

Wait. That was the STATE ME? Not just a local county level guy? You'd think he would be a bit more savvy.
Probably neither here nor there, but CT doesn't have county government. All government is either done at the state level or at the municipal level.Pretty small state - something like 6 counties.ETA: typo

Irrelevant side note.Quick Google search and I found he was making 300k as Chief ME.Would have never guessed that position pays that much.

He's an MD. That's worth 150k at least. He's got 30+ years experience. Bump to over 200k. Stressful job trying to determine lots of facts for prosecution, internal political wrangling etc, probably worth 50k. Then he's a govt employee, so benefits and security are there. I can see it.

Doctor on right now. Says the long weapon was the primary weapon.3-11 wounds a piece on the victims.ugh
Just disgusting...3-11 wounds per victim...used mostly the rifle (which most reports said was found outside???).As if it could not get any more sick and messed up.

I don't know why I looked at the list of the victim's names and birthdates. Ugh.

I wonder what they'll do with the surviving school children. Obviously they are not going to have school until the New Year and I would assume that they will not bring the children back into the school for this year. I will contact the Head of School of my child's school, and ask her if they plan on absorbing some of the children but I honestly do not know if it would be better to keep classes together or split them up; I would imagine there is not a correct answer here. I think I would be looking for a change of venue for my little one just so it could be put to rest. The Newtown schools have put out an Email to the children of the district (private school too) for access to grief counselors starting tonight at 7:00; I wonder if I will have to bring my little one there. My child asked me why this happened, just as he did about the Colorado incident, to which I answered that there are bad people in the world and you have to be careful; besides the disgusting fact that our children have to deal with this crap, I was left only with a hollow feeling from my answer. Maybe I will take us both up to the grief counselor.

It's going to be tough for those kids and parents.

If I was a parent that had a kid at that school, it would be difficult to ever take them back.

As an aside, I bet home school attendance soars nationwide now.

Tough one. Could argue that the school should be permanantly closed. Could argue that the sickos win in that case.

Haha...sounds like an offdee scale.

I couldn't watch much coverage yesterday, but I feel like CNN is doing a nice, respectful job with it today. I like this Don Lemon guy on lead.

I don't recall seeing the killer's picture once... in at least two hours of viewing.
They just showed it.
Weird... he looks perfectly sane. Same googly eyes as the jackass who shot up the movie theater.
He looks like a living skull.
But there are several other pictures that have come out that don't make him look that crazy. Should we hospitalize all googly eyed people? I know you aren't suggesting it but it just feels like authorities/media try to portray these guys to fit a narrative. In retrospect, Holmes seems "crazy" but at the time what did he have? He was a PHD student in neuroscience and sure some of his behavior seems weird but there are a lot of people like that.
ORLY?I couldn't find one picture where he's not doing that creepy pursed lip thing.
http://i0.wp.com/###...nza-picture.jpgDoesn't look that creepy to me. Heck, his brother looks creepy too by that standard.
I think that's Ryan.

Is this speculation or based on something you actually know? I would assume that the school would be open Monday with the goal being to try to restore a sense of normalcy to the community and to have those in need near the resources that will be made available. I'm pretty certain during the press conference one of the remarks was about finishing up the criminal investigation and returning the school to school authorities. Obviously it won't really be normal for quite a while, and this normal will be a "new normal".

No BFS, I do not know what they would do but it is a crime scene, the remaining teachers lost colleagues and students (including their principal), and the children must be in a state of shock being led out of school with armed soldiers and troopers flanking them into the waiting arms o their freaked out parents; I would be stunned if they had school this week especially with winter break starting next Friday. I think the fear of the questioning of the insensitivity about the decision to reopen a school on Monday, would be enough for anyone to at least punt this.

I honestly don't think I can deal with this any more. It almost seems abnormal how much this is affecting me. I need to get away from the tv and the computer for a while.

I think this is going to very true. We've got cops manning speed traps all over the place here. Putting them in schools and in malls isn't going to bother me, that's for sure.
Sad, but true - armed guard at a school doesn't bring money into the police department - speeding tickets do.
Yet 90% of the posters on this forum would ##### and complain if you moved the speed trap guys into real positions to protect and serve and replaced their posts on the side of the road with cameras.

These families will likely never experience Christmas the same way again. That is sad on a whole other level than the immediate shock/grief they feel now.

The rest of the world will move on in a few weeks, but I hope these families reach out to organizations like Compassioate Friends. My brother died 25 years ago, and my mom still goes once a year.
