Rumor has it that Ellis reinjured his achilles and might be anoucing his retirement this week. If this happens or if Ellis is slowed even more on the return how does Spencers stock climb? Ahead of Beason? Poluz? Phillips has talked highly of him so far. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Scoring system dependent. Sack heavy leagues could see Spencer at LB2-3 value, tackle heavy and neutral leagues will blunt Spencer's value no matter how much he plays.

Same defense as San Diego's.I see no reason Spencer's production can't be equal to better than Shaun Phillip's in San Diego. Shaun Phillip's is a pretty good #2 LB in sack heavy leagues.

 He's like Phillips with a better presence in run support. Coincidentally, Both were Purdue defensive ends (Ray Edwards from Minnesota is another DE this program recently produced)

I was going to say a Poor man's Merriman, but like the Phillip's comparison better...............

I'll be at camp today and a few more times this week. If/when time permits, I will report back.
:hophead:
I am so (blanking) (blanked) right now. I got home from practice last night and spent a solid hour writing up my practice report. The entire document...lost...and it cannot be retrieved. Just not cool. I have not visited the boards since May and that is what I get the first day back. Technology gives me the proverbial finger. Nice...Give me this evening. All kidding aside I was blessed with a photographic memory and I should be able to recall just about everything I had down including my feelings about Rowdy.

Cowboys Camp Report

While I have a minute, I wanted to thank everyone for their emails and messages the past few months. I had to take a break from all things football right around the time the NFL Draft wrapped up. The Shark Pool’s operating rhythm is equal parts “jacka**-edness,” testosterone weighted checks & balances and the fantasy football think tank. Buried deep below the infinite aliases; sophomoric slanted jokes and casual ego checking backhands, there are a number of good people making it all work. Well, if we consider the aforementioned aliases, it might only be a few guys but I digress. I just wanted to say thank you to those good people for their notes over the past few months and to any new members or readers…hang with the Shark Pool. The collective’s bark is far worse than its bite.

Prior to getting started just let me make it clear. I hate the Cowboys. Despite being a native Texan…if you all could be so lucky…I hate the silver, white, blue and star. Unless those colors are being worn by people in pads hailing from Ford Field I have no use for them. However, I did watch practice and will report with an objective eye. Conversely, after all of these years of hating the Pokes, I found something new to draw my wraith at yesterday’s practice. How have I missed this…him…it…all this time? Who and or what am I talking about? That would be Rowdy.

Rowdy might be…no, he is…the worst mascot in the NFL. He appears to be some demented Disney on acid caricature of the Cowboy from the Village People. Parcells was well within reason to ban Rowdy and his oversized chaps, guns, spurs and ridiculous; customized four-wheeler from practice two years ago. Even my entourage of 7-9 year olds, cotton candy and Coke consuming, native Texan, die-hard Cowboy fans agreed. Too a tiny man they felt Rowdy had to go. Is that not Rowdy’s target audience? Was the judgment of all those children in my charge temporarily impaired by gluttony and glucose? I think not. Those kids heckled Rowdy the entire practice and upon this moment of clarity I let them. All of them…decked out in Poke gear from head to toe…rode Rowdy with the expertise of career minor leaguers.

Highlight of Practice

5 Eagle fans decided to turn up at practice yesterday. Each had on a jersey and was immediately booed upon entering the seating area. 3 guys decided to do what is normal and they had on their respective McNabb, Dawkins and Westbrook jerseys. Of course, 2 of their friends had on personalized jerseys, which is a social sporting function faux pas. You do not do it and you definitely do not order a personalized jersey with the numbers 1 or 69 on it…ever. Neither guilty party had decided to roll with either the 1 or 69 but their offense was just as bad. It goes without saying all 5 guys caught heck…all practice…and, considering I was a mere few rows away, all 5 caught the attention of my Poke Posse. I am not sure those 5 guys had intended on having their tails chewed by sugary high kids all practice but that is what they got. Rowdy was relieved. The responsible thing to do would have been to call them off, as those 5 Eagle fans were outgunned, but…sometimes…you have to let kids be kids and I am a BIG believer of starting them young. Thus, my little guy now knows how to properly speak to and address an Eagle fan in the state of Texas. It was all in good fun.

What I Saw

Keep in mind I had a LARGE number of kids with me so I did my best.

Overall, though, the practice tempo was down and that is not the anti-Cowboy in me talking. A few players had fires under their backsides but, as a team, the practice was or felt very sluggish with the exception of the OL vs. DL work. If what I saw was any indicator of the type and amount of emphasis that is being put into that part of the football team, expect the Pokes to stunt more this year and have an offensive line that is a little more aggressive and capable.

Expect to see a number of screens to both the backs and tight ends this year. There were plenty of reps running both types of plays and players 21 (Jones), 24 (Barber), 80 (Fasano) and 82 (Witten). Expect to see 21 and 24 in a split backfield on passing downs this coming year. 32 (Battle) looked decent when his chance came up.

21 is still not the answer at RB. He had a hard time getting inside and was outright stuffed on a few plays. Had it been a game the hypothetical hits would have registered in the ear-hole to “decleater” range. 24, though, looked decent. I never realized how soft his hands were. On two separate occasions 24 took the ball out of the closing hole and hit the backside, leaving a pair of defenders to trip on hash marks in each instance. 32 looked surprisingly efficient when he got some touches.

From what I witnessed 85 (Rector) had the best practice of any offensive player. It was clear he was out there trying to make the team and earn a roster spot. He looked great coming into and out of breaks and he made a few fancy grabs. He spent time rotating out with 17 (Hurd) in what looked to be the 4th receiving slots, which was both in 7 on 7 drills and passing tree work, and he worked in and out with 41 (Newman) at PR.

9 (Romo) looked great getting warm and working the passing tree. However, he looked very indecisive once 7 on 7 got started. The defense is still very far ahead of the offense this time of year but 9 had a hard time getting rid of the ball. Likewise, his arm strength is deceiving. It is much more impressive in person.

53 (Glymph) started opposite 94 (Ware) with the A defense. 53 can play football and, like 85, it was clear he was working to earn a job yesterday. By my count he had what would have been 2 tackles behind the LOS and a sack. That guy has some fire.

Speaking of 94, watch the (blank) out! Seriously, I would not want to be on the business end of one of his tackles. He dismissed any and all OL thrown at him yesterday. He is a player.

93 (Spencer) and 97 (Hatcher) were solid. I noticed Spencer is starting to draw some hyperbole and I wanted to be careful with what I report. He had a good practice. It was not Canton worthy. It was, though, better than what you might expect from a rookie. He and Hatcher are each high motor, high energy, nasty disposition types and it was clear yesterday. Conversely, I would temper or recalibrate my IDP expectations, as a number of players got reps and were worked in and out. He is going to get his chance but it is clear so are a number of other players.

:moneybag:

Thanks, WhoDat. Your insights, analysis and rants were missed. Could you tell what was up with the ILBs (nickel package, etc) between the boys heckling the outsiders?

Just with the A team in general it was Carpenter and another player. I never got a good look at the number. I immediately caught onto 53, 93 and 97. I watched those guys all pratice. I really just watched a TON of 53 and 85. Those kids were that impressive yesterday. On passing downs/drills/snaps...these drills were being held at the other end of the practice field going away from my field of vision and I had moved down towards field level...it appeared 31 (Williams) was spending some time at what appeared to be an ILB position. I am not sure who else rotated in and out with him...Carpenter was nearby... but 31 got snaps there. Don't take that as any sort of gospel, which is saying that 31 will be moved to a LB position on nickel downs...but I saw him get some snaps. I was more focused on 9 and his inability to get the ball out and away. Most of his reads/throws were to check down receivers. Also, 82 was being used in a more aggressive down field fashion...coming across the field on drags/outs behind 81 (Owens). My feeling is that the jobs on defense are open. There was a very heavy rotation of players yesterday at each end of the field. If I go again during the week, it will be minus Our Gang. I'll be with clients and it will be much easier...much easier...to take some notes and watch a few different things. Also, I will probably be at each session this coming Saturday.

Players like Spencer are why you need to know your leagues scoring. He has limited value unless your league is sack heavy.
Assuming an owner knows their scoring they then have to determine how rookie players whose status, in this case is either DE or LB, is listed. In the case of Spencer his listing on the software that my league participates in, ESPN, is that of a DE.

http://games.espn.go.com/ffl/freeagency?le...;search=spencer

Anthony Spencer, Dal DE
ESPN changed the status of Terrell Suggs from a DE to a LB. He goes from a top five DL stud to a low point LBer. Two years ago Suggs was listed as a LB and ranked well below third tier LBers, last year he was the third highest scoring DLman. Greg Ellis has been listed as a DE and so has DeMarcus Ware so Spencer has to go up on any ESPN IDP draft board.

What I Saw

From what I witnessed 85 (Rector) had the best practice of any offensive player. I
Rector was a successful Parcells project. Why they drafted Skyler Green with Jamaica working so hard (from the practice squad) and improving so much was strange to me. We've yet to see anything of him, but as I understand it, he is freakishly quick and major RAC threat who makes highlight reel snags at almost every practice. Thanks Who Dat. That was an entertaining read. :X

You guys might want to pick up the Cowboy Report via the web. They are broadcasting live from lovely San Antonio and the show runs either 10:00-11:00 or 10:30-11:00 CST. If you are a hardcore fan, it is worth a listen. Despite my hatred for the Cowboys I even listen.

The emphasis at practice and or the BIG talk right now is that the Phillips' 3-4 is a one gap defense. Parcell was running a 2 gap scheme. If you want a VERY educational break down of what that means, check the radio show's broadcast history and see if the show from 7/27 is still available. Total hardcore  Seriously, that broadcast is not for the casual fan, which is why I...Cowboy hater...tune into the show. They...know...what...they...are...talking...about. It is worth the listen.

What does the one vs. two gap mean in less than 10 seconds? (There are a number of very inappropriate jokes available here but I am supressing my desire to type something snappy.)

Roy Williams could be in for a legit, pad cracking Pro Bowl season. Additionally, players like Spears and Canty could come up over the course of the year. Spencer fits in there too. They will be able to use their athleticism to get stuff done minus dual responsibilities.

Rozelle, Spears looked decent. He had a good practice. He was a person of interest on the show this morning, as was Canty. Each are gaining some notice and have positive talk surrounding their early play.

Thanks for posting that information, WhoDat. Those interested in that kind of thing should check out our IDP Audible podcasts. We discussed the Phillips 3-4 in depth on the IDP 401a podcast which discussed the nuances of most NFL defensive schemes.Still working on a 3-4 uber-article. Hoping to have it up by mid-August.

ESPN is terrible if they are doing the above.
Its their free boards. I've been screwed and benefited from the listings. This year, I have Suggs and am targeting a couple of different IDP replacements based on the changing whims of ESPN listings. If I don't replace T-Suggs then I'm screwed. But the broad brushed statement about the value of Spencer and others with 'iffy' positional status has to be directed to how those players are listed vis-a-vis each owern's software. T-Suggs goes from stud to dud status instantly and a sleeper like Spencer emerges. I gain no advantage, just trying to tread water but others are prolly in the same ESPN IDP ocean and need a head's-up. Jes toss'n that caution out there as I don't know how other leagues list hybrid players.

Bankerguy, you mean you are good with personalized jerseys sporting #1? Totally messing with you.

If, like Bankerguy, you have any differences of opinion or you want me to try and find out something specific either through camp visits or local media coverage, you have to let me know or throw it out there.

I am tentatively scheduled to attend Thursday and Friday practices. That could change. Conversely, I plan on being at each of the Saturday workouts.

I would be interested in Craytons role in the offense - with slight injury to T Glenn - thinking he might get more looks. Thanks WhoDat

Camp Report 8/4

Well, a good buddy and I tried to find some answers at the end of a case of beer last night. The wake-up call for camp came really...REALLY...early today. I made it out there with a nasty hangover but forgot my field glasses. The hangover was not too bad until Rowdy...yeah, that guy...showed up. I weighed the options of the pending assault and trespassing charges vs. running onto the field and punishing that freak and figured I better just suck it up.

Very quickly

Spencer was opposite Ware all morning with the first team at LB. He never put a hand down today. Spencer got blown up a few times on running plays today. Not knocking him but it is clear he is still a rookie.

Carpenter is playing second string and not looking very good...at all.

Roy Williams had a nice pick against the A Team offense.

Romo looked ok. B. Johnson is awful. Romo spiked the ball on a 3 yard bootleg score. I know he was doing for the fans...fire them up...be a showman...but the guy is a complete (blank). Sorry, Poke fan, but I cannot stand him and that is yet another reason to add to my list.

Barber is still getting A Team goal line touches. From the practices I have seen Barber is clearly the better RB.

Crayton had a nice TD grab at the back of the end zone. Hurd still appears to try and work harder. Crayton was lining up opposite Owens today with the A Team offense.

The Dallas special teams units are bad...REALLY bad. I have seen high school punters and coverage teams that look better. That team has problems with that part of their game.

Overall, the defensive pass rush looked good today...REALLY good. They forced a number of bad throws, throw aways or check downs.

A number of false starts by the offense today.

Sorry, folks, that is all I have time for today.

Thanks again, WhoDat. If you get a chance to go back, I'd appreciate your opinion on Kevin Burnett. Any chance he's talented enough to slip up into a starting ILB spot?

GOOD chance I am back out for Sunday's practice. I have not noticed him but, if I go tomorrow, I will make a point to watch how/when/where/why he is being used.

From The'Boys Blog: Kevin Burnett also returned and was flying around on the second team standard defense, getting plenty of reps with the first team nickel and manning one corner on the field goal teams.Bobby Carpenter and Kevin Burnett got lots of reps inside with the first team 3-4.

As it relates to Carpenter, either the P.M practice was different from the A.M. which is what I attended, or me and the person that wrote that watched two different teams yesterday. Carpenter was strictly second unit the entire morning session.

Thanks. Hadn't started my daily rounds yet.I think both notes are meant to say that Burnett was playing with the first team nickel. Elsewhere on Vela's blog and other Cowboy sites, it appears that James and Ayodele both look quicker to their assignments this year. Neither are playing in the nickel currently, including a 4-2-5 wrinkle that has Ware, Spencer, Burnett and Williams in the game as the ends and backers. There was also a note elsewhere that Burnett has looked good but missed a couple of practices with a knee issue which put him behind in whatever competition there may have been with James.Still a situation to watch closely, but there is unlikely to be a Donnie Edwards to be found in Dallas this year.

MyFantasyLeague currently has Spencer as a Defensive End, yet the Cowboys site list him as a linebacker. MyFantasyLeague will change correct???? Don't they go by the official teams listing on their website??? Would love him as a defensive lineman, but I am assuming that MFL will change his status prior to the season.

MFL usually updates around the second preseason game. Spencer will be a LB.

From The'Boys Blog: Kevin Burnett also returned and was flying around on the second team standard defense, getting plenty of reps with the first team nickel and manning one corner on the field goal teams.Bobby Carpenter and Kevin Burnett got lots of reps inside with the first team 3-4.
Burnett was flying around last night in the second half. I think they need to get this guy on the field more. He's missed time with nagging injuries during this camp, but he's turned heads when healthy. He has expressed some serious frustration with the situation, and I suspect he is more dynamic inside or out than players being given longer ropes. On topic, I watched Spencer closely last night (and really tried to keep an open mind). I wasn't impressed. He seemed very hesitant when things were open. He was unblocked on an occasion and had a very slow reaction to it. He was engulfed by any lineman he engaged, but I had the sense he was working on a technique. Rather than explode upfield and try to get the edge with a speed rush, he consistently ran right into the RT and tried to bounce a move from there. It didn't work, but on ONE passing down he did give the RT a serious problem after engagement. There's hope. He was driven and manhandled against the run. He didn't show any flash or explosion in this game (or during his overrated college career but that's another story). Obviously, he's trying to learn the position, but he'll be a big downgrade from Ellis. I would love to see Burnett "out of position" on the outside the way he's exploding to the play. He looks like he has a little Steve Foley in him. Wade wouldn't miss that if I'm right.

What is the newest story on the ILB in Dallas? Is it Ayodele or Burnett, for the starting position?

And did I hear right that this is the main scoring position for Wade Phillips Def?

Burnett is having surgery for a bone spur in his ankle. Carpenter is getting snaps outside with Ellis still recovering. That's left little competition for James and Ayodele. The better position in Phillips' scheme has been the RILB in recent seasons. That appears to be Ayodele in this case, but since he isn't playing in the nickel and James is, it's going to be much closer if not reversed for the 2007 Cowboys.Ayodele could be an interesting situational play but I'd roster James first.
