"They made it difficult for me to make a play on the ball," Gates said. "Every time I looked around, there were two guys on me. They wanted to take me out of the game, and that's what they did."
The Chargers tried to counter. Gates and Vincent Jackson switched positions, with Gates outside and Jackson moving into the slot. It didn't matter. The Patriots stuck with Gates, hitting him on the line, covering him with another player and frequently bracketing him downfield.
Jackson took advantage on cross patterns and deep routes, collecting a career-high 10 receptions for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Gates, by contrast, didn't have a catch.
He wasn't targeted until less than five minutes left in the third quarter, and that pass was intercepted by safety Sergio Brown inside the Patriots 20. Rivers only looked Gates' way one time after that.
"I was surprised they stuck with me as long as they did," Gates said. "I thought they'd make it difficult for me to get off the line, but I thought I'd have opportunities throughout the game. I tried to stay patient, but they had a terrific game plan."
