how the hell does Gates have this type of game..i read somewhere that good ole Norv switched VJAX and Gates so get single coverage on VJAX...well i think that pretty much sucks, not sure if that was the case or the case moving forward but as a Gates owner in a few leagues it killed me this week..oh well, maybe it was only a 1 week thing..

Some discussion already here: http://forums.footballguys.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=591794

I didn't see the game, but the scuttlebutt is that Belicheck gameplanned Gates out of the game. That may be true, but it's not like the first time he's been gameplanned against - definitely something to watch IMO.
These threads dovetail nicely into the Belichick documentary where he expresses concern about them being "done" if a couple players were shut down. He's taken steps in their offense to ensure that doesn't happen to the Pats while attempting to do precisely that to the opposing team each week.

I havent seen it discussed yet but he was getting looked at on the sidelines but that was very late in the 4th.

In fact, the trainers may have just been asking him WTF he had zero catches on the day. :hophead:

To start the game, the Patriots used their "big nickel" package, which included three linebackers and three safeties. This allowed safety Patrick Chung to be on the line of scrimmage, in coverage on TE Antonio Gates off the snap. The Patriots also frequently used another defender, usually LB Rob Ninkovich, to jam Gates at the line. Further, safety Sergio Brown was used to jam Gates five yards deep, while LB Dane Fletcher was sometimes stationed in Gates' 'hook' zone.

"They made it difficult for me to make a play on the ball," Gates said. "Every time I looked around, there were two guys on me. They wanted to take me out of the game, and that's what they did."

The Chargers tried to counter. Gates and Vincent Jackson switched positions, with Gates outside and Jackson moving into the slot. It didn't matter. The Patriots stuck with Gates, hitting him on the line, covering him with another player and frequently bracketing him downfield.

Jackson took advantage on cross patterns and deep routes, collecting a career-high 10 receptions for 172 yards and two touchdowns. Gates, by contrast, didn't have a catch.

He wasn't targeted until less than five minutes left in the third quarter, and that pass was intercepted by safety Sergio Brown inside the Patriots 20. Rivers only looked Gates' way one time after that.

"I was surprised they stuck with me as long as they did," Gates said. "I thought they'd make it difficult for me to get off the line, but I thought I'd have opportunities throughout the game. I tried to stay patient, but they had a terrific game plan."

This is an outrage.
:lmao: Curse those Patriots and their game winning ways!!!

Actually, this explains the first 3 Quarters pretty clearly for me. However, it doesn't explain the 4th Quarter.

Gates got hit on the first play in the 4th Quarter, for which the Chargers received a 20 yard pass interference penalty.

From that play on, he was on the sideline. Anybody know why? Anybody go to the game and care to shed some light?

I admit I was going between games on NFL Sunday Ticket, but Phil Simms and Jim Nance commented more than once about it throughout the 4th Quarter [Gates being on the bench that is] Of their plays in the 4th Quarter I saw most of the 17 in the quarter ... Gates was not on the field ...

Any chance he got hurt? Aggravated his planar fasciitis? Why else would he not be out there competing with his teammates?

I don't think he looked right even before the 4th quarter hit. He didn't seem to get much separation even when single covered. He's beaten double coverage before, and as the Floyd play showed, Rivers has no problem throwing to guys with coverage if he trusts they can make the play. I think he's still hurting.

I dunno, he had separation on the INT Rivers threw in the late 3rd early 4th quarter. It was just an awful throw by Rivers. As I said in the other Gates thread, by the time Gates was getting single covered V.Jax was obviously the hot receiver and I don't blame Rivers for continuing to feed V.Jax the ball until NE proved they could stop him.

Gates will still get his catches and still be a red zone threat, but he isn't the same player he was even a couple years ago. I can't remember the last time he broke a tackle. Everything he catches is one hit and he's down. The elusiveness and explosion is gone. I think it's a combination of the foot, ago, and weight.

He looks fat and slow to me and got no separation. As an owner I'm concerned and he didn't play In the fourth quarter . I think he is hurting
I think it all comes down to problems with his feet. He can't do much between games on them, so it's got to be tough to stay in shape, which then leads to no explosion, agility, etc. It's great that he's trying to be a team player and tough it out, but I believe they need to strongly consider shutting him down and letting him try to get back to a 100%, including conditioning, before they play him again. However long that takes.

I'd agree with you if he hadn't just taken the entire offseason off. I think even at 75% he's a valuable weapon due to the attention he draws and in general he catches everything throw his way, even if he doesn't get any YAC.

Well, guess what ?

Antonio Gates missed practice yesterday, but I'm sure it's Belichick's fault

The list of Chargers working out on the sideline and in the training room – and not on the field for practice -- was a who’s who that included four starters.

While a player missing practice can never be completely glossed over, the good news is that the three of those players who are not Malcom Floyd are likely going to start Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs.

“The other guys, I think, are sorer than we expected and hopefully they’ll practice tomorrow,” head coach Norv Turner said.

Those players and their respective soreness: tight end Antonio Gates (foot), safety Bob Sanders (knee), and running back Mike Tolbert (calf).

While Sanders’ health is of particular interest and any time missed will be scrutinized from the outside, he played all but five snaps Sunday at New England and his sitting is said to not be a concern at this point. However, the Chargers have signed safety Paul Oliver for depth at the position. Oliver spent 2007-10 with the Chargers and was with the New Orleans Saints this past preseason.

Tolbert’s need for rest was likely a combination of bumps and bruises from taking a beating against the New England Patriots.

Gates experienced soreness in his foot after Sunday’s game, the same foot that bothered him the majority of last season, kept him out of the final four games and caused him to sit much of the preseason.

While the facts will do little to quell the concern of fans, the fact is that Gates missing occasional practices has long been expected as part of a strategy to keep him healthy.

“Just trying to take care,” Gates said.

Asked if there was danger in him playing Sunday, he said, “No … Not right now, at least.”

If his foot is still a problem he will be very average this year. He had a great year last year but I think it was because Vjax didn't play most of the year.

Ugh this is all too familiar from last year with this guy. I never thought it'd come to this but I picked up Gronkowski late in my draft and I think I'm going to bench Gates for him. I can't afford another goose egg at the TE position. :yucky:

Belicheck happened.
Do people really believe this crap ?

I mean, this is Antonio Gates 9th season and I'm pretty sure somebody else tried to do what Belichick did Sunday

Unfortunately Gates is not healthy and young anymore
2011 - shutdown2010 - 4/50/1 (3rd lowest week)

2008 - 4/35/1

2007 - 7/77/1 and 2/17/0 in the 'revenge game'

2006 - 6/61/0

a lot of people try to do what hoodie does --- doesn't mean they do it.

btw, while a big part of it was hoodie, I agree that he's also gimped.

Antonio Gates (foot) was held out of practice again on Thursday.

This is becoming a legitimate concern. Gates was obviously at less than full strength against the Patriots. A team insider told Pro Football Weekly last week that Gates can rule out being 100 percent healthy "for the rest of his career," as the injury has robbed him of the speed and athleticism needed as a vertical threat. Reliable beat writer Kevin Acee is giving Mike Tolbert (calf) a better chance than Gates to play this week.

I feel like it's panic mode time.

Edit: Secondary source was Rotoworld

seriously -- how can you possibly draft gates without concerns about his feet??

I've owned him since he was a 2nd year player in a dynasty league. However, now, I am considering trading him before it's too late.

who would sell low on Gates and take a Fred Davis type for him or would you play the ww for a dickson as see what comes risking he falls off this year and you lose all value?

My inclination is sell as high as possible, he will have some good games, like this week againt KC hopefully, and then bye bye

Wasn't it accepted by pretty much everyone that Antonio Gates would miss some practices pretty much every week throughout the year?

I guess I don't see why this is so shocking, other than coming off a 1 target 0 catch week.

I was high on Fred Davis in the pre-season but held off on picking him up because I took Gates as the BPA. Then I didn't pick up Fred after week 1 because I needed to roster Hixon to cover for Nicks on MNF. Couldn't grab Davis on waivers, so stuck with Olsen to cover for Gates if he's out.

IF SD is a playoff caliber team, and I'm not saying they are, they SHOULD be able to beat a reeling KC team(without Charles) in SD without passing much. If they don't pass much or get a lead Gates may not contribute much and the panic in this thread with get wrenched up about 5x. If that happens I think Gates is a buy low in every single FF league. Get your trade offers in as early as possible to take advantage of the peak frustration of the Gates owner if he has another clunker. Just my $0.02.

I'm not buying him. With his foot being an issue this early into the season, you can expect him to miss more games and the really detrimental part to fantasy squads are the games where he starts and then leaves the game early.

And Im at the other end of the spectrum. Drafted him in the 4th round and id sell him to you for cheap. Im starting Olsen this week.

I think with Hernandez being out you'd make this move even if Gates were completely healthy. Gronkowski is TE1 in FF right now.

I know no one cares but if you are gauging value

I just traded Gates (have Graham and A Hernandez) for Fred Jackson (I lost Charles and only have Hightower and Tate)

I know I lost out on the deal since Gates was ultimate buy low and Jackson sell high but I felt like I needed to do it

Fred Jackson is huge value for Gates. I would take far less at this point. Having Graham and Hernandez made that a no brainer for you.I only have Olsen behind gates, so I think he is a hold. But I honestly think as the weeks go on Gates value will continue to fall and Fred Jackson will look more and more like a steal each week. Great job.

With as deep as TE this year, why the heck would anybody risk buying an aging TE with a bad wheel?

Ill say this and then stop talking about my team since I dont want to clutter up this thread. The guy that made the deal has Shady, CJ and Best. He took a shot bc he only has F Davis and Gresham. Probably a risk he could takeShutting up nowBack to Gates talk

Not sure what to think here. Had a great outing in MIN, with game high targets, then falls off the radar screen in NWE. Obviously, wish I had done more due diligence on this guy before I took him 3rd round. Call me concerned... but not panicing yet.

Because as recently as 12 months ago he wasnt just playing well, he was having an historic season. But your coyness is appreciated.

source is Rotoworld

Updating a previous item, Antonio Gates (foot) retreated into the Chargers' facility after going only through individual drills at the start of Friday's practice.

We'll know more in a few hours, but Gates may be headed for a doubtful tag after his attempt to practice apparently didn't go so well. Randy McMichael is the Chargers' backup tight end. Vincent Jackson (abdomen) and Mike Tolbert (toe) are both expected to play against the Chiefs. Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee is now skeptical that Gates will join them in the lineup.

Debating what to bid on McMichael. Anyone have any idea where his price might pan out in a blind auction? Obviously would hope to get him as cheaply as possible, since the news is pretty damned new and most likely non-Gates owners aren't following this. Also putting in a healthy bid for Jeff King. What are you all doing?

$0 Randy McMichael sucks. I thought that was proven last year. So does Jeff King
