He looked out of it right after the hit, but he seems to know what was going on when I was on the sidelines later on.Anyone nervous that this could a serious issue. He looked out of it yesterday. This will be his second concussion in 4 months. If he is not out for a couple of weeks and gets hit again, we maybe looking at a short career in the NFL. Especially for QBs this is not something that you shake off and let him play the next week if he says he is fine.

I know that Ron Dayne suffered from his jaw meeting a "concession", and not just the one in Atlanta...No link (sorry) but heard this on espn radio (Chicago ) about 1/2 hour ago. They reported that some of the Falcon's staff had said they were looking at his jaw and a concession.Espn was not saying if info was on the up and up, just what they heard thru the Atlanta Falcons.Editing to say, by staff espn did not say Coaches, trainers or stadium workers, ect.

ESPN now reporting that MRI came back negative and that it was a concussion. No news here. After seeing that hit, and finding out he was knocked out by it, I'm starting to get REAL worried about this shortening his career... :(Anyone nervous that this could a serious issue. Sources: Big Ben suffered concussion
ESPN.com news services
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger suffered a concussion in the Pittsburgh Steelers' loss Sunday to the Atlanta Falcons, sources familiar with the situation told ESPN's Merril Hoge.
X-rays and MRIs of Roethlisberger were negative and he has no fractures, but Roethlisberger's status for next Sunday's game at Oakland is uncertain.
Against the Falcons, Roethlisberger was injured after taking a blow to the head in the third quarter. Roethlisberger appeared to receive a helmet-to-helmet hit in the face mask from defensive end Chauncey Davis immediately after releasing a pass in the third quarter. Defensive end Patrick Kerney and linebacker Ed Hartwell also hit Roethlisberger on the play.
Roethlisberger remained on the turf for at least five minutes before finally wobbling to the sideline, then got wheeled to the locker room on the back of a cart. He did not return to the game and watched the end of the Falcons' 41-38 win in overtime from the sideline.
Roethlisberger was not made available to reporters after the game. He was moving slowly and was in obvious discomfort as he put on his shirt and jacket at his locker.
It was another blow to the Steelers quarterback, whose season has already been marred by a serious motorcycle accident and an emergency appendectomy.

The hit didn't look brutal to me and that's the weird thing. It wasn't like Trent Green or some helmet to helmet. Several guys came at him at once but I was a little shocked he went lifeless after that collision... Makes me think he's got a soft head now... Which doesn't bode well for his dynasty value...Anyone else think the same thing? After seeing that hit, and finding out he was knocked out by it, I'm starting to get REAL worried about this shortening his career... :(Anyone nervous that this could a serious issue. You might be right but he got nailed in the head by two defender's helmets at the same time. I think he got whacked pretty good. The hit didn't look brutal to me and that's the weird thing. One of my coworkers said that Theisman mentioned that he could be out for the year![]()
It would not be surprising to me. They are 2-4, Batch looks fine. They need to think about the future with Big Ben. If he contiunes to play we can look at another Akiman or Young. You may think he is still too young to be in the same sentence with them, but both Young and Akiman were not in a catistrophic event that caused a major concussion. I mean the guy's head bounced off a car without a helmet. One of my coworkers said that Theisman mentioned that he could be out for the year![]()

Excellent point. As I recall the play, Ben get hit from the front first, then a few tenths of a second later get hit from the back. In addition to the actual contact made by the second player, this second hit prevented Ben's head from continuing to recoil back from the first hit and caused his head to absorb more of the energy of the first hit.Sometimes the worst blows are the ones absorbed by the head. Think about Dale Earnhardt Sr. when he hit the wall at Daytona. Crash didn't look remarkable in any way. However, in slow-motion you can see the shockwave pass through the entire car when it hits. The car almost ripples for lack of a better word. This obviously killed senior and I don't think Ben took anything close to that much force, just trying to illustrate that the worst hits are not necessarily the ones that are featured on "Jacked UP!"
Okay. I only saw it a couple times. Roethlisberger doesn't appear to have a severe injury, could play Sunday
Tuesday, October 24, 2006
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
ATLANTA -- Big Ben may be Lucky Ben again after it appears he came through another head injury with only mild distress and could play Sunday for the Steelers in Oakland.
Ben Roethlisberger was to visit a neurosurgeon yesterday afternoon to follow up on tests that were conducted Sunday in Atlanta after he left the game in the third quarter after a blow to his head that left him with a concussion.
Ryan Tollner, Roethlisberger's agent, spoke to his client twice Sunday night -- once after the game, before the quarterback joined his teammates for the flight home, and again after he arrived home in Pittsburgh. Tollner said while he did not know the extent of the injury, he heard nothing to lead him to believe that Roethlisberger had a severe concussion.
"He was very coherent and had no ill effects in his thinking," Tollner said. "He was aware of everything that occurred."
The Steelers would have kept Roethlisberger in Atlanta for observation had it been a severe concussion.
The team, through a spokesman, said it would have no information on Roethlisberger's condition yesterday. Coach Bill Cowher usually updates injuries to his players at his weekly news conference, scheduled for noon today. Cowher did not call the injury a concussion when he spoke to the meida after the game but did say, "Ben is sore."
Tollner would not speculate on whether Roethlisberger will play Sunday.
Roethlisberger had an appointment yesterday afternoon with Joseph Maroon, the Steelers' UPMC neurosurgeon who is vice chairman of the department of neurological surgery at Pitt's School of Medicine.
The fact the team waited nearly 24 hours before scheduling Roethlisberger to visit Maroon also was an indication the injury was not severe.
"My feeling was I was happy just to see Ben get up," Tollner said. "When he was laying motionless, it was a frightening sight. It was good to see him get up, walk off the field and return to the sideline."
Tollner also was happy to see Roethlisberger get on the charter flight back to Pittsburgh Sunday night.
"We've had other cases with clients where that individual stays in a hospital in that city overnight," Tollner said.
Roethlisberger's agent said that while he believes the quarterback will be OK, he welcomed the precautionary stance the Steelers took with him after the blow on Sunday.
"When you're talking about concussions and injuries to the brain and cerebral functions, that's far more concerning than physical injuries to the rest of the body," Tollner said. "We are intent on taking every precaution with Ben or any client we have to make sure he's never rushed back too soon, that every test and scan under consideration is exhausted."
Roethlisberger sustained what was described at the time as a mild concussion when he was injured in a motorcycle accident June 12.
But even then, injury to his brain was minimized because his face absorbed most of the blow from the car's windshield.
"Even after the motorcycle accident, Ben was functioning mentally very, very well," said Tollner, who talked to Roethlisberger the night of the accident. "It just seemed like they deemed it a concussion.
"Even after the accident he was very clear. He obviously was in a lot of pain and discomfort, but I never thought for one moment that his mind wasn't working right. He didn't have a loss of memory or the inability to put together coherent sentences or understand what people were saying.
"My point is that I've seen a lot of other scenarios with concussions, and for a few days, he might seem dazed and hazy. I never experienced that with Ben since I've known him.
"There are signs initially on impact that a person has a concussion, with dilated pupils and different things. I know some people suffer the effect of memory loss and a hazy effect. Even after the motorcycle accident when I spoke to Ben, he was clear and coherent."
Roethlisberger left Sunday's game midway through the third quarter when he was smacked to the ground by Falcons defensive end Chauncey Davis on what appeared to be an illegal helmet-to-helmet hit.
In threes
It's said bad things happen in threes, a fact Ben Roethlisberger might attest to.
June 12: Is involved in an accident on Second Avenue and 10th Street, which breaks his jaw, nose and orbital bone and chips some teeth. He recovers in time for training camp.
Sept. 3: Has an emergency appendectomy and misses the season opener against the Miami Dolphins.
Oct. 22: Knocked out of game by apparent helmet-to-helmet hit by Atlanta's Chauncey Davis.Inside
Because football is a contact sport, concussions aren't uncommon, but team doctors are doing a better job of recognizing the problem and intervening before more harm is done.
