Any news on Kitna losing his job? (1 Viewer)

Someone in my 16 team league with small rosters just picked up McCown. Has there been news that McCown is going to be the starter here and I missed something?

Nothing to report as far as I know.

I picked up McCown a couple of weeks ago in my dynasty league on the chance that if Kitna were to get hurt that McCown might be able to step in and do about as well as Kitna. Perhaps someone in your had the same idea? I would think that backup QBs with some potential might be valuable in 16 team leagues.

Thanks. It's just an odd move. The guy is in 1st place and lost McNabb and has Garrard, Cutler and Campbell. He is a good owner who is usully on top of things and I thought I must have missed something.

It's not a keeper or a dynasty league. We start 8 guys and only have 14 roster spots. This guys is carrying 4 QBs. I don't get this move at all.

I think there have been rumblings in the detroit papers by columnists looking for them to shake things up, but nothing that says Martz/Marinelli are likely to do it, AFAIK.

For some time now FBG have recomended McCown as a deep insurance guy who could perform well if something happened to Kitna because he is (a) athletic and (b) in Martz's offense.

The guy could be speculating for either of these reasons.

Sounds like he's stockpiling waiver wire dark horses to find a replacement for McNabb, and hoping that 2-9 prompts DET to give the young guy a look.

He is picking him up just to piss you off. :bag: In all seriousness though, if he has the extra roster spot, he may be picking them up to keep someone else from grabbing him. I have no idea what the rest of his roster contains, or his tendancies/history to try and confirm this though. Just another thought to consider.

I have McCown in a dynasty league and am, sadly, a Lions fan and I would love to see him get a chance. However, Marinelli just said that he's not pulling Kitna.

i havent heard anything on kitna being benched either, but... as a lions fan and kitna owner i think we'll see mccown at some point. the lions arent good, kitna is not the QB of the future, why not see if mccown is. if he plays like crap the last few games of the year, they can draft a QB in the first few rounds a roll with kitna until the rook is ready. it just seems like the lions should see what the have in mccown. although, maybe they've seen enough in practice to know that he's no more than a backup. the lions fan in me wants to see josh play, the fantasy owner in me wants kitna play out the season.

Detroit

With a Thanksgiving loss to Joey Harrington at home last Thursday, the Lions’ season officially reached the point of no return, but we’re told there’s no indication of an imminent QB change from veteran Jon Kitna to younger backup Josh McCown. Without question, Kitna — who has thrown an interception in nine straight games — has held the ball too long and struggled to get it done in the clutch and in the red zone. However, he’s also one of the most respected leaders in the locker room and the one who most embodies the spirit that head coach Rod Marinelli demands from his players. Therefore, benching him could potentially have greater implications in the locker room and threaten to undermine Marinelli’s approach. Meanwhile, we hear that McCown was never signed to be Detroit’s quarterback of the future, but rather its backup of the present. Furthermore, we’re told that offensive coordinator Mike Martz would have to pare down his playbook for McCown, who hasn’t demonstrated Kitna’s ability to run the complex offense.

Past Detroit WWHI >

I don't know why they'd make the change

Since I discuss this in detail in the roundtable this week, I can only be brief here, but the team's been out of it for weeks and hasn;t made a change, they have tough pass Ds upcoming and need a vet back there, Martz has an interest in not changing horses right now, and a change is not beneficial to the team.

I agree that it wouldn't be beneficial to the team this year. However, it could be beneficial in the future. Why not take a look at McCown or even Orlovski. If they prove to be #1 material then you have your QB of the future. On the other side, if they both look like crap you loose nothing but a few games at the end of a crappy season and you get your QB in the off season, via free agency or draft. They would most likely have a top 2 pick. They have nothing to loose and potentially a lot to gain.

hutchins929, has it been the QB spot that has been responsible for the losses? Is there really a need to see what they have in the other QBs?

The team signed Kitna for more than just a year, right? Maybe their best bet for the future as well as this year is to see if Kitna can work out the kinks while this year suXor.

That way, he has a lot of experience in the Martz offense, he is embeded as the team leader, and there is a foundation of consistency (Kitna, Jones, ROY and Furrey) to build on for next year.

I'd rather see what Orlovsky can bring. We've already seen McCown in AZ, and while he did alright, we know he isn't the future. We also know Kitna isn't. We don't know about Orlovsky yet, but then, there's probably a reason they haven't given him a chance while a playoff contender does make the change to a rookie.

No, he isn't solely responsible for the losses. Their biggest weaknesses are the O-Line and the Secondary...IMO. However, They do need a QB for the future and a guy in his mid 30's isn't the savior! This is the third year for Orlovski, he knows the WR's. What have they got to loose?
