Any plumbers here? (1 Viewer)

So my in-laws got new kitchen cabinets. I helped remove all the old stuff, the cabinets are installed and I’m trying to get their kitchen useable. They had a 2-bowl sink and went to a sink bowl. I have the garbage disposal hooked up and the sink is useable but I’m not sure how to do the dishwasher and vent. I think I can just run the dishwasher drain into the pvc that was the 2nd sink bowl, using a “high loop” arrangement. Just wondering how I do the vent. My sink at home is single bowl and I have a separate vent under the sink but I don’t think there old construction has this vent to the outside. I told them they might just have to hire a plumber for this....

If that waste line is tied into the main stack (main waste line,) that exits the roof of the house you can do the "high loop" as you describe it. (You're creating a trap as well as giving the proper gravity to allow the water to drain downwards.

It's unlikely that the kitchen drain isn't part of the main stack but if it isnt you have two options:

How to install vent under sink Install AAV air admittance valve

You can install a sink top "air gap" like the ones at your grandmothers house that overflowed with water if the line was clogged

Lot of videos on Youtube about this high loop ye speak of.

If you need a nudge though and just want to get into your weekend, tell them to hire a plumber.

I would ask how this has become your problem but it did say "in-laws" in all fairness so I do understand why you are doing this.

Youtube has been a savior many times for home projects. Not saying they will have exactly what you need but I am not handy at all. Over time I have learned a lot of basics just simply watching the video how it is done a few times until you are comfortable.

Good Luck

Yeah. Youtube has saved me thousands and thousands of dollars over the years.

You can hook the dishwasher drain to the garbage disposal. Just make sure you pop out the plastic stopper in the garbage disposal.

As far as the vent, what vent are you talking about? Does the sink drain down into the basement or into the wall?

Thanks, how do you tell this? The house was built in the late 70s early 80s. I’ll try to get a picture of it in the nexy day or 2

Into wall. The old set up had one of those vents on top of the counter tops. My set up at home the vent is under counters. There is no hole in the new counter tops to run the old style vent

Im tripping. You kinda threw me off with the whole wondering if the house was vented properly....

You can just hook up the dishwasher with he high loop like you said. You don't need that air gap anymore.

When I first got divorced, I wasn't using the dishwasher but I noticed that water was building up in the bottom.   Now I know why.   I just have my drain hose running below the disposal before connecting to it.   Need to do this high loop thingy.

What do you mean by vent? Can you take a pic?

When I think of vent I think of a waste vent that vents through the roof for sewer gases. So if their plumbing drains into a wall, that vent should already be attached to your drain pipe, but it goes up through the roof.

When your drain pipe goes into the wall, it goes into a plumbing Y.

Drain pipe in from your sink, drain pipe down to the main line, and vent pipe up through the roof.

Yeah I’m probably using wrong term, think I should be saying air gap instead of vent
