I haven't seen anything about how Chester Taylor is doing at Vikings camp. Anybody have any news?
http://www.kfan.com/pages/vikings/camp2006...ok/ctaylor.htmlChester Taylor Q&A
Q: First Question, the heat? Hot enough for you?
A: Yeah, it's much hotter than when I was at Baltimore, but I worked out in it so luckily I can adapt to it real quick. Just keep myself hydrated I'll be alright.
Q: Talk about the prognosticators, I guess they're not real high on this team?
A: I mean, pre-season works up to the regular season so we'll try to find ourselves during the pre-season and just get ready for the regular season. We start off tomorrow and hopefully we can get better every day while we're out here.
Q: How do you build chemistry in the first week? Is that even possible when you're first putting on the pads?
A: I believe chemistry started at our first mini-camp, working our way up to pre-season. We started off in mini-camp doing good and we just need to build during our pre-season right now.
Q: Have you been doing a little extra side work to get ready?
A: Yeah, starting off when I first learned the system back at our first mini-camp, I just try to keep going over plays so they stay in my mind, so I can always just go out and play instead of always thinking about it. So I can just go out there and execute.
Q: Talk about the last few weeks when you've been off. A lot of guys do extra conditioning in different places to get ready, what did you do?
A: I've been working out in Houston, you know it's hot down there too so I just tried to do that and get adjusted to the heat. I know it's gonna be hot out here, but I know it's a lot different working out with full pads on. Just gotta keep myself hydrated and just go out there and play.
Q: After backing up Jamal (Lewis) for so long, how does it feel this season knowing you're probably going to end up being the guy?
A: It's real exciting, I mean I'm real anxious and I can't wait for the season to start. I hope this pre-season goes real fast so the regular season can come. But I'm looking forward to a great season this year.
Q: How quickly can you lose pounds in heat like this?
A: That comes natural. Going out there and practicing every day, sweating, we just keep a lot of fluids in our system so we're gonna lose a lot of weight while we're out here.
Nothing much out there that I could find.Q: Can you talk about Chester Taylor and what your expectations are for him?
A: I've said I tracked him all the way back to when he played in the Mid-American Championship and they came back from 21 points down against a pretty good Marshall team. The coach said we're going to put the ball in your hands and win the game, and he did. That usually doesn't leave you. He was stuck behind a pretty good back (Jamal Lewis) with the Ravens. That's why guys usually move in free agency, so they can have an opportunity at another spot. He had this opportunity. He's a physical guy, a compact guy, he's got good eyes. They didn't feature him that much in the pass game, that wasn't their style, but he's got pretty good hands.
Q: Do you expect him to be your feature back?
A: We're going to feature a lot of different guys, but yeah, we brought him in here and signed him as a starter.
Q: What are you expectations of the running backs?
A: I think that will unfold itself too. I'm anxious to watch Chester (Taylor) with his pads on. Obviously we graded him and watched him as a free agent when he was with the Ravens, and it's always exciting to watch somebody be the lead guy. I'm interested as well in Mewelde (Moore), Ciatrick (Fason), Adimchinobe Echemandu and all of those guys. My expectations are that Chester Taylor will be a good player, and Mewelde will push, and Ciatrick will be a second-year player that is that much better.
Inching him down my mental listNothing much out there that I could find.Q: Do you expect him to be your feature back?
A: We're going to feature a lot of different guys, but yeah, we brought him in here and signed him as a starter.
I doubt that's really necessary. My take on that statement is just pure coach speak. He's going to see what the other guys can do in camp and pre-season, just like every other coach does, but Taylor is the starter. It's his gig to lose.Inching him down my mental listNothing much out there that I could find.Q: Do you expect him to be your feature back?

Taken in context with the question, I don't think it is coach speak. The question is in reference to the season, not camp or the preseason. When you have another RB that's fairly good (Moore) on the team, that isn't the type of statement you want to hear coming from a coach if your looking for workhorse back.I doubt that's really necessary. Vikings | Moore must prove himself to Childress
Sun, 30 Jul 2006 14:12:06 -0700
Sid Hartman, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress said RB Mewelde Moore will have to prove to him that he can stay healthy before he can count on the running back. "Moore is versatile, the question is whether he is durable," Childress said. "It's not about ability, as Bud Grant (former Vikings head coach) told me, it's not about ability, it's about durability. If you are going to show up for Game 1, not Game 2, Game 3, not Game 4."
...which he will.I doubt that's really necessary. My take on that statement is just pure coach speak. He's going to see what the other guys can do in camp and pre-season, just like every other coach does, but Taylor is the starter. It's his gig to lose.
Fixed. You bolded the wrong part of that quote.Inching him down my mental listNothing much out there that I could find.Q: Do you expect him to be your feature back?
A: We're going to feature a lot of different guys, but yeah, we brought him in here and signed him as a starter.
This quote says it all. Chester is the lead guy. Moore will push for playing time. Fason is #3. Nothing to suggest RBBC.Q: What are you expectations of the running backs?
A: I think that will unfold itself too. I'm anxious to watch Chester (Taylor) with his pads on. Obviously we graded him and watched him as a free agent when he was with the Ravens, and it's always exciting to watch somebody be the lead guy. I think you might be underestimating Taylor a bit. Maybe someone can correct me here, since I only get to see Taylor play about twice a year (can you guess which 2 games?) but in every game I've seen, he has looked to me like a better back than Lewis. Quicker, more versatile, yet still able to run with power. If I were the Ravens, I'd have ditched Jamal and re-signed Taylor for less than waht Lewis costs....which he will.I doubt that's really necessary. My take on that statement is just pure coach speak. He's going to see what the other guys can do in camp and pre-season, just like every other coach does, but Taylor is the starter. It's his gig to lose.
I'll guess the Browns, due to the intrigue surrounding Modell moving the team?Long story short, I think CT's attitude stinks, he's too fragile and MMoore will take his job.Maybe someone can correct me here, since I only get to see Taylor play about twice a year (can you guess which 2 games?)

Oh, I see, so you can write off Taylor because of his fragility but then discount Moore's fragility when annointing him the starter. 1) Yes, I am allowed to do this....just ask Joe Bryant.2) Just because MMoore has been hurt in the past, doesn't mean CT is more durable this season.mnesvig said:Oh, I see, so you can write off Taylor because of his fragility but then discount Moore's fragility when annointing him the starter. Just because I have more issues than Reader's Digest doesn't mean Taylor won't be awful, either.Just because CT has been hurt in the past, doesn't mean MMoore is more durable this season.
I see that, I just don't see one being more or less injury prone than the other. I get the feeling you just plain don't like the guy. I'm a little more open minded at this point as they both seem to have some pluses and minuses.Just because I have more issues than Reader's Digest doesn't mean Taylor won't be awful, either.Just because CT has been hurt in the past, doesn't mean MMoore is more durable this season.
Correct. I loathe him in ways that are not measurable by modern science.I get the feeling you just plain don't like the guy.
I don't think you can accuratly assess the context of the question because none was given. He wasn't asked specifically about the regular season so you can draw a conclusion that he could have been talking about pre-season as well as regular season. Childress has also stated that Chester will be receiving 25 carries a game. How do you judge what's really going on in his head? Hence, the coach speak. He even states that Chester wil be the starter and Moore will push. I think his context for the words 'feature' and 'push' are open to a lot of conjecture at this point. That's just the way I see it. You make valid points though and it could easily go the other way. Reg's last news quote is also indicative of Chester being the guy. I think the only reason we're having this discussion is because Chester first appeared in Minny a little on the chunky side. The media got a hold of it and ran it into the ground. Chester has since improved his conditioning and what happened? Childress said his job isn't in danger. Seems pretty cut and dry.HK, did Chester burn you big time in some way? I too have a visceral dislike for some NFL players (Joey Harrington) and was just curious what prompted your feelings.Football Menace said:Taken in context with the question, I don't think it is coach speak. Yes and no. Last year I had him on one of my FF teams and he had had a chance to earn significant playing time with Baltimore, but he threw a hissy fit and skipped a few practices in Week 10. As a result, he never emerged as a viable RB3 on my roster. The playoffs rolled around and I was left with a hole at RB for the title game because the Colts had the top seed locked up and nobody knew how long Edge would play. While I still won the championship by starting Rhodes, it caused me great (and undue) distress knowing that Taylor could have been a viable option for me to start that week, but he wasted his opportunity. Most people would be happy with this scenario, but not me. This made me angry, and I will forever hold a grudge against him for putting me through so much angst in week 16 of last year trying to decide if I should start Edge or Rhodes. He let me down in my time of need, and that is an unforgivable offense, regardless of the outcome. Aren't you glad you asked?HK, did Chester burn you big time in some way? I like Taylor about as much as H.K. loathes Taaylor, and not in my wildest fantasies do I see Taylor getting 400 touches this year. (Nor do I see many RB getting that many.)Bottom line for those looking at drafting Taylor, IMO, he's going for a fair market price. There's no denying that he's in a far better situation yet his track record is mostly unproven. Therefore, he goes to the back of the bus in the RB draft carousel but ahead of guys fighting for spots on mediocre offenses and ahead of guys that are in clear RBBC.So your thought processes should be that you either think Taylor will keep the job or you don't. If he DOES keep the job all year, you got a steal taking him in the RB 20s. If he DOESN'T keep the job, you invested a 3rd to 5th round pick on a guy that didn't pan out. However, how many other RBs taken after the first dozen will we be saying that about? My stock answer is that Taylor 2006 = Duce Staley 1999 or 2002There are a lot of reasons why that is a decent example (of which no one has yet to poke holes in) but I don't have time to go into detail right now.Taylor could be in for a 400-touch season.
Dude, that puts you in "prison cell mate" territory, you may want to reword that post.I like Taylor about as much as H.K. loathes Taylor

Yikes. You should post this in your sig so at least readers will know that you're nowhere near being objective when you make predictions regarding Chester. True.Even if Fason/Moore take some of his touches, it's no concern to me. Behind that line, in that offense, Taylor is money in any receptions league.
What about non PPR leagues? I like Taylor. I've actually got him ranked with D. Davis and Brian Westbrook. I know it sounds crazy, but, if I had to draft today, I'd take him with my 2.1 pick. They've got a great line in Minny. Minny can throw the ball, which will obviously open up the running lanes. They will be playing both the Packers and the Lions 2 times. The Vikings also play Buffalo, San Fran, Arizona and the Jets. Weeks 14, 15 and 16 are against Detroit, NY Jets and Green Bay. Minnesota also plays the Rams, but, not until week 17. If Taylor is healthy, he will provide excellent numbers through the fantasy playoffs.Even if Fason/Moore take some of his touches, it's no concern to me. Behind that line, in that offense, Taylor is money in any receptions league.
Absolutely agree- I got to see him a lot via the NFL package last year and he was far and away more productive thatn Lewis. He was especially good catching the ball out of the backfield. i'd peg him as a second to early third rounder. he should do well.I think you might be underestimating Taylor a bit. Maybe someone can correct me here, since I only get to see Taylor play about twice a year (can you guess which 2 games?) but in every game I've seen, he has looked to me like a better back than Lewis. The Vikings have too much built-in risk. For one, Brad Johnson is 37, and I don't see him playing as many as 13 games. There isn't a decent abckup on the roster either. Second, I'm not so clear about what there is to like in the passing game. Koren Robinson could start drinking tomorrow (or just keep dropping the ball like he did in Seattle), Travis Taylor has sucked except when Jeff Blake was throwing him the ball, Marcus Robinson is pretty old, and Troy Williamson hasn't shown much. It's a collection of meh WRs, and no premiere TE on board either.I liek Taylor, but this team is in serious flux. They will benefit from a good line, but I don't want Taylor at 2.01 - that's crazy talk. What about non PPR leagues? I like Taylor. I've actually got him ranked with D. Davis and Brian Westbrook. Didn’t Jamal Lewis almost break the single season rushing record with the rookie Kyle Boller and a collection of equally as bad if not worse wide outs? Ok, they had Heap. In 2003, Baltimore did have awesome D and a good O-line? Minnesota should be solid in those areas as well. It might be against the odds but it definitely not crazy to have a Minny RB among the top 20 rushers in 2006.The Vikings have too much built-in risk. While the perfomrance of the offense was solid, the big news was that barring a break out performance by someone, Mewelde Moore will be the starting punt returner. "Mewelde, as of right now today, is our punt returner," said special teams coach Paul Ferraro. "He certainly did a good job and was at a high level a year ago with that. But we're working some different people back there. Darren Sharper is taking some, Travis Taylor has taken some, we have some rookies in camp that will be in the pre-season games getting an opportunity. So Mewelde is our number one guy."
INJURY BUMP!Vikings RB Taylor injury is to left legJust because MMoore has been hurt in the past, doesn't mean CT is more durable this season.
I don't think it was a "simular" boat. For starters Jordan had no real competition for carries. Second, he had one of the best WRs around on board. Third, he had a QB in Collins who while hardly perfect is a much better option than Johnson (FF wise anyway)...........etc........Remember it was a year ago when LaMont was in a simular boat.
Yeah me too. Just not sure how much. And lmao @ 400 carries. Be impressed if he gets 300.Lets not get his bust ready for Canton just yet, but I am interested.
It seems that a lot of people want to point out how much Moore is going to take away from Chester's value. There aren't that many backs in the NFL that don't have a 3rd down back that comes in for them. All backs have someone who comes in to spell them from time to time. If any back took all the carries for their team in a year they would break down. Moore is talented but has proven he can't hold up under to many carries.Taken in context with the question, I don't think it is coach speak. The question is in reference to the season, not camp or the preseason. A: We're going to feature a lot of different guys, but yeah, we brought him in here and signed him as a starter.
I'm not sure what K. Collins' fantasy football value has to do with his effect on L. Jordan's fantasy football value. B. Johnson is more than capable of keeping defenses honest--his style may be more of the accurate, move-the-chains stuff, but it's sort of hard to reconcile why (if Collins is superior) Johnson is starting in this league and Collins can't even find a job.Minnesota got a new regime this year. New owner, new coaches. They looked at the RBs on the roster. And promptly went out and signed Chester Taylor. That's all that I need to know--he will at least get his shot to prove that he's the guy that they thought he was (so long as he can stay healthy, of course)I don't think it was a "simular" boat. For starters Jordan had no real competition for carries. Second, he had one of the best WRs around on board.
