Anybody here a non-drinker? (1 Viewer)

I don't drink and never have. I just really dislike the taste of alcohol, even in food.

ETA: doesn't bother me at all when others drink, although I don't care to be around drunks.

I quit for a couple of years when my kids were younger. I worked out everyday and was in great shape. I would go to events and parties and while everybody was laughing, dancing, telling stories and having fun I would just sit there drinking soda water. Then I thought..why work your ### off if you can`t look forward to a cold beer now and then??

So I started drinking beer again and have not looked back. During football playoff season I love drinking beer and watching football. I can drink without watching football, but I can`t watch football without drinking.

AcerFC is straight-edge, I believe. Maybe he'll check in here.
yeah. I made the decision at an early age to not drink or do drugs. That was without ever doing either. So it doesnt affect me when people drink. As the old sxe saying goes. I'm drug free but all my friends will take free drugs. I don't judge anyone. Personal decision
Do you allow alcohol into your home?
yup. I buy it for all of our parties and fantasy drafts
straight edge was the group that rose up out of the punk movement, right? I remember reading somewhere that a lot of them are vegan, too. Is that accurate?
correctThe vegan thing was secondary when it first started and picked up steam with NYHC bands like youth of today and then it went real extreme with Earth Crisis.

I am not and have never been vegan so they are not tied together
I just did some research and saw there is a pretty right-winged part of sxe and a pretty extreme leftist wing of sxe. Must be interesting when those two groups meet up.

I just read about that as well. Interesting

Reminds me a bit of the libertarian party.

I'm a non drinker on Monday, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and most Sundays.

Most of the time now though I just pour something i really enjoy the taste of and enjoy it for the quality of the drink. If I get a little buzz, great.. if not, no worries.

I simply have a tough time going "big" though these days... i'm so prone to blacking out and the recoveries are brutal.

After swearing that lite american beers were a total waste of money I've found myself going back to them because i know exactly where i stand after X number of Miller Lites or Michelob Lites.

For me I spent all of high school drunk. Just stupid drunk. So much that from the time I graduated and into my early 20's I didn't touch any alcohol, just lost interest in it.

Since then I like to have a few drinks socially, but I don't like getting drunk. I have a specific buzz zone that I target and don't like to go beyond when I do drink. But even then I may drink 1-2 nights a week if that, sometimes going several weeks between drinking.

So I don't know if that classifies me as a true drinker or not. I have friends that will take repeated shots, beers, etc all night long. To me they are the true drinkers.

In 2011, I quit for a New Year's resolution - indefinitely, though I figured a year. I ended up on a work assignment in London from April to September. By May, I realized it would be much more fun to be able to enjoy pints with friends at the pubs, and decided I'd limit quitting to 6 months. On July 1, I had one of the best beers of my life at an outdoor cafe in Budapest.

Since, I've had 3 or 4 benders. Slowly gravitated back to daily wine drinking - 6 or 7 days a week, averaging 3 glasses. Never more than a bottle, but that about 1 or two days a week.

I would classify myself ostensibly to be in good shape. Work out 6 days a week, good balance of cardio core and weights. Trim. But got my blood work back in November and cholesterol was 241. Blood sugar borderline (possibly because I'd had most of a bottle of wine the night prior and tested early AM.)

Regardless, I went on a strict low cholesterol diet, no sugar whatsoever and have been on it since the week before Thanksgiving. My biggest sins were red meat and barbecue, one of which I ate pretty much daily. None since the blood work.

Cut out booze as a New Year's resolution. For six months. As with the last time, it's been pretty easy although I'd prefer to drink at night. Wife has had a couple beers and drank sake when we went out to sushi last night. I find the trick is to have something I can pour in a wine glass, whether its a fruit smoothy, green tea, even club soda with a lemon. It's the ritual I

miss, the end of the day exhale, as much or more than the alcohol.

I'm sure I'll stay on the wagon to July 1 and may make the 6 months off annual. That way I get all the major holidays and summer to drink socially and can put the cabash on the inevitable habit that forms when it becomes a nightly comfort thing. I'll note that the idea of limiting to a glass a night or just weekends just doesn't fly with my personality. It's either no alcohol, and I have very little trouble with that discipline, or I can drink and judgement is only as good as my whims, which tend to become more whimsical in proportion with consumption.

Have not had a beer since October 10, two days before being beginning a 10 day stay in Mass General with heart problems. No caffeine, no salt, no alcohol, no working out...rug totally pulled out from under me, and it's not short term.

So yeah I'm a non-drinker and it ####### blows.

Sometimes the biggest victory comes from a simple surrender.
Sounds like a AA quote to me
Why? Have you been to AA or something?
FIL was a drunk that became a AA talking head. I heard more then my share of AA propaganda.
I'm sensing you aren't a fan of AA? Is that because you don't like its message or that you just have a deep, seething hatred for your ex-FIL?

Not a fan of AA and you sense right. I am happy it works for a lot of people but to me it is like a cult. He is not ex FIL just a dead one. Liked him better when he was a drunk though.
Understandable.

Just over two years ago i decided to not drink indefinitely. Wasnt a huge drinker but definitely had the big nights out and the recoveries started taking longer and longer. i could not do much athletically and huffed when i tried running down my street. Fast forward to today at almost 40, i have lost 40 pounds, ran two half ironman races and in november did a full ironman. Doing London Marathon in April.

I have no plans to start drinking again. Work, friendships, marriage, and family relationships are all better now than they were before.

Tried it in college and it didn't sit well with me. I don't like be any more off and fuzzy than I normally am so by choice, I don't drink period. NYE I'll have a sip of champagne with everyone but someone else finishes my glass. I also don't smoke and never have of any thing. My parents should never complain about me and my bro. We didn't get into any of this stuff and were "model" kids, well imo... :D We created chit in other ways to keep them on their toes!

Oh and should anyone bring alcohol to my place that's fine. Drink up, don't drive and take what's left with you.

Non-drinker here, no problem with anyone else drinking in my house. No moral issues with drinking, just too many alcohol issues in my bloodlines and with my personality ten drinks was never enough and one drink was too many. I miss it sometimes, but haven't had a drink in several years.

Lol at different factions of straight edge kids. I know two other people who are straight edge. There are not too many of us out there. I've met Karl from earth crisis. He didn't beat me up for wearing leather sneakers. There was a short time period where straight edge gangs were forming. But they were mostly teen hoodlums who happened to say they were sxe
According to YouTube, Minor Threat shows were hella crazy.

Have maybe 3-4 drinks per year, at the most. That's actually up from zero drinks per year until I was in my early 30s...as even the smell of beer/wine can make me gag. So when I do have a drink, I make sure to stick to the good stuff...rum, vodka, whiskey, etc.

My buddies and I had a good rule in college that I wish more people would use: When you wanted a drink, it had to be the good (expensive) stuff, and if you wanted to smoke, it had to be cigars. Partially because we believed in quality over quantity, but mostly because none of us could afford more than 1-2 drinks/cigars at a time, ever. So it was a way to make sure we never developed a habit (becoming an alcoholic, addicted to nicotine, etc.).

Anyway, compared to 90-95% of people here, I suppose the above makes me a non-drinker. I'm thankful I never developed a taste for "rent-a-pee," as I don't know how some of you guys can afford to make the mortgage payments from the sounds of how much alcohol you consume.
You sound like a hoot. Kind of a judgmental hoot, but a hoot none the less.

I'm kidding of course. I love hooters. ####, not the restaurant.
