Anyone been to Cancun or Riviera Maya, Mexico lately? (1 Viewer)

We're here and it's glorious beyond words. I love the Mexicans, they really know how to enjoy life. For example, I made myself a blood mary at the bloody mary bar, and then I made another one and then I made another one and then I made another one. Nobody gave me a hard time. I'm drunk at 10AM and it almost seems encouraged here. Now I just need to find some herb.
How are those vows coming?

If you go into Playa check out this little bar and taco stand next to Senor Frogs, They have 2 for 1 beers all day and the food is better that Frogs.  You can sit outside on the little deck drink beer, have a couple of tacos and people watch.

Yup. A few of us were trying to eat breakfast (noonish) last month and they kept bringing tequila shots. Literally five rounds of tequila shots during breakfast. We only asked for the first one. My friend's night ended when "security" showed up to advise him that he had had enough and they were there to escort him back to the room. They brought a wheelchair and wheeled him back. They are serious about the party there.

"Babe, wow, 10 years right? That just flew right by. I think you're ####### awesome, the juggs still look great and I'll totally stay married if you're still into it."

I'm screwed. She had a special dress made, wrote vows and said there are multiple other surprises coming. I bought her a new diamond wedding band and I guess I better get her a Luois Vuitton bag or something.

OK we get it...

I'm speaking to the kidnapper now- please state your demands clearly. Herb. Check. And?

Peso to dollar rate getting slaughtered.
I'm stunned by the prices here. I'm tempted to buy cases of stuff to ship home and flip on ebay. I need to find out how many bottles of booze they will let me put in our checked luggage. And we're definitely either shipping a box of souvenirs home or buying another suitcase to load up. Also going to buy the most obnoxious sombrero I can find to wear to the concerts and on the plane home.

I think 350 pesos is around $17usd?  heading to the ritz for 4 nites in November.  I am intrigued by the crab house menu, if anyone has been there.....

Current rate is 1 peso = $.049 so I've been dividing the peso prices by 20 to get the rough USD equivalent. I bought a nice pair of polarized sunglasses for 10 bucks. Handies are $18 and the chicks are pretty decent looking.

What souvenirs/crap could you possibly want to buy?

Beach guys are mostly scammers plus many of the nicer places run them off their beach. Even the police are starting to really crack down on the beach sales. There was a period where they were totally banned but they must have worked a deal out because they were back this winter.

With all of that booze flowing is weed worth the risk of getting arrested in a foreign country?
No, I don't even bother but assuming you are at a respectable place, it shouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't go smoking in downtown Cancun, but if you smoke on your balcony, it won't likely be an issue.

The day we went into Playa we were approached by a guy selling pot.  I don't smoke but even if I did there is no way I would have bought any from this guy or anyone else for that metter.

The last thing I want to do on vacation is get busted, especially outside of the USA.

The places don't want a reputation for it. I've never heard of anybody getting busted down there and for me that is remarkable. That said, now that I'm a little older I would stick to the concierge guys connections. More expensive, but definitely safer than some random dude on the beach. But really, they want you to have a good time there. Nobody wants to see you get busted. You have to really be a knucklehead to get busted.

This is also true.

I stayed there like 5 years ago and loved it.  Going in a couple weeks to  Iberostar Paraiso Lindo Resort .  I'll report back.
Thorn, my wife and I are headed to Iberostar Paraiso Lindo in a month, any recommendations on places to eat or any tips you can provide from your stay.

Thanks

She's into it!!  I hope the three of you have a good time.

Hope this is better clarification.

Let's see.  Might have been the best all-inclusive trip I've been to.  Pools are everywhere and huge.  Beach was a little crowded but not too bad.  Water was a little rough (wind and coral underfoot, but no seaweed).  The rooms were good not great.  Staff was great; never had to wait for anything, super friendly and helpful.  There's a concierge desk on the first floor of every building, so you don't have to walk out to main reception to arrange stuff.  They were awesome.  The nightly shows and the club were just okay.  Nightly shows were drowsy IMO, and the club was a little bit as well, and also pretty young.

The buffet/main restaurant was A+++.  By far the best buffet I've been to.  Each night was a theme (Japanese, Mexican, Italian, etc., all were good to great, I especially loved the Japanese night).  We went to two sit-down restaurants early in the week that were meh, and agreed to just hit the buffet from then on (plus it meant we didn't have to have reservations).

There are three resorts.  Think of them as gold-silver-bronze levels.  If you are facing the water, bronze is to the left, silver in the center (the one we were at) and gold to the right.  You have the right to use your level and the ones below.  So we had silver, we could go to silver and bronze, but not gold.  They will try to offer you a free breakfast at the gold one where someone will show you around. DO NOT GO IT IS A SALES PITCH.  Not quite as high pressure as a time share thing, but close. They try to get you to be a member of their club, which is similar to a time share thing, for $10,000 to $100,000.  Waste of time and the breakfast wasn't even that good.  The bronze one has some cool wildlife exhibits, so that's worth a walk over, have a drink and see it.

Any other questions lemme know.

Thanks for the insight.  We are staying at the silver resort from your example.  Looking forward to the nice weather.

Thanks again

Sad commentary on all-inclusive experiences if this has been the best.

They are definitely not my bag, but the gf wanted that experience.  Weather, staff, pools/activities, food (once we figured it out), were all A+.

A Cancun AI is a pretty good value if you just want to get on a beach, drink, and bang your wife.

The total spend per couple all in can be easily under 400 bucks a day. Depending on time of year closes in on cruise prices.

Its better to compare it to a cruise experience rather than a normal hotel.

Great info.  I am heading here July 16-22nd with my fiancé for her families yearly vacation.  First time they are doing it out of the states and doing an all inclusive.  Her family and extended family all booked months ago and did the same one you did (Lindo).  We weren't originally able to go, and Lindo was sold out by the time we were able to, so we are stay at the Gold one since it was all that was left.  Unfortunate since we will basically do everything with her family, but I guess it will be nice to go somewhere that they cant go if we want to be away from them!

I have been to three all-inclusives in Mexico, two on the Riviera Maya and one at Punta Mita (near Puerto Vallarta). I had a great time at all three and all three packages were purchased at steep discounts, but the difference in the quality between the three of them was remarkably noticeable, particularly when it came to food and beverages.

The Paradisus Playa del Carmen was by far the best one. Our room was awesome and the food and drinks were generally of very high quality. It is the only one of the three where I actually looked forward to eating at the on-site restaurants. It was also, not surprisingly, the highest price point property of the ones I have visited, though we found an incredible deal on it.

We enjoyed our visit to the Iberostar Playa Mita too. The rooms were nice enough and the location is unbelievable, but the difference in quality of food from the Paradisus was striking. Iberostar is a more budget-priced chain.

In other words, you generally get what you pay for, and deeply discounted specials are your friend.

(Shocking take away, I know)

Going to royal playacar in Playa June 12th. Looking forward to it.

Wife wants to go to chichen itza for a day trip but I am thinking tulum instead. Anyone have strong opinions on either?

Are you going on your own or with a tour?  I had a pretty bad chichen itza experience because of the tour we chose.  No AC on the bus and we got serious montezuma's revenge from the lunch spot the tour stopped at.  It also made multiple stops along the way so that villagers could sell #### to the rich American tourists.

I was at an AI south of Playa Del Carmen two weeks ago. I traveled by myself and so paid a single-occupancy premium.

7 nights cost me $1510, so about $215/night.

I booked the flight separate and flew up front so it was about $750, but you can fly coach non-stop from Dulles to Cancun (about 3 hours in the air) for under $400.

I then booked a private transport round trip to-and-from the airport for like $120, complete with a cooler of beer and no one else in the van but me.

So, in total it was about $340/night. I can't go to OC, MD for that with food/booze included

I have never been to Chichen Itza because it is such long trip. Tulum is very cool and an easy trip and the Coba pyramids are also pretty cool and they are maybe a half an hour from Tulum.

I'd have to check- but fairly certain we do our non-AI trips for those prices or less. I'm really not a fan of AI and would only go if "forced" by family (inlaws). I much prefer to do my own thing in places of of my choice.

major caveat- we don't drink a lot, so booze and all.

If you can make a full day out of it, do Tulum and take advantage of some of the shockingly amazing restaurants on the beach. I spent a week there and was blown away with how good some of the food was.

Yeah, there's the kicker. Food & booze would cost me what I spent on just the room per day. I like this AI - been there 9 times.

we do nice with our food on trips- combo of eating out and in... and usually buy a bottle each of wine and booze with some beer. but we're not daily drinking ourselves into liking each other or anything. plus the kids.

Ok that's good to know.  Haven't booked anything yet and don't really want to stop at every podunk village on the way back.  Tulum seems like the easier trip.

Not planning on renting a car so will maybe look on TripAdvisor for tour recommendations.

This sounds like a good plan. Just need to sell it to the old lady.

We took a private tour to Chichen Itza and Ek Balam with this company and it was a little pricey but fantastic.   Definitely the highlight of the trip.  Not only do you see the ruins but you get a feel for Mexico and how the people live.
