Anyone been to Cancun or Riviera Maya, Mexico lately? (1 Viewer)

yes, assume dollars.  There is no real reason to get pesos.

This level of tipping quoted is really high.  They don't expect that.
Maybe, but I build it into my budget and it's something I want to do.

There are many more Euro guests than US/Canadian, so you don't see a lot of tipping. I mention that because you won't stick out like a sore thumb if you choose not to tip all of the time (or ever).

I'm picturing Uruk-Hai as Al Czervik.  "here you are, kid, park by car, get my bags, and put on some weight, will you."

Interesting. Where I stay there a lot of Mexicans and they often treat the staff like garbage. It's kind of infuriating.

The Europeans tend to, also. Especially the Spaniards. There's definitely a caste system and the folks of Mayan descent are at the bottom of it.

I actually had a German dude tell me I was ruining it for everyone else by tipping.

Yeah, you can definitely get a feel for the peninsulare/creole, mestizo, etc. social structure that still exists from colonial days. Darker the skin and less Euro looking, the lower the respect. Wealthier pale skin, Euro looking Mexicans with money from Mexico City act like they are royalty.

It just occurred to me that I don't think I've ever seen a Mexican guest during my many trips to the Riviera Maya area.

I think the $1 a drink thing is going away.  I think the better way to handle this, if you just want to do the charity thing is on the last day bring an envelope to those that you know, not just a blanket make it rain deal.

I think the staff actually don't like the visible waving around of dollar bills.  I've also seen the euro guests get huffy about it when comparing service levels.  I get it that many people don't care what the euros and other tourists think, and perhaps feel guilty about dropping someone's yearly salary in a week for a trip.

And regardless of my idolization of Al Czervik, I don't do that either.

Where I stay most of the drinks and things are on my card, so I add gratuity when I sign the bill so that makes it discreet and simple. As for the bell boys, I tip them cash when they help him. It's discreet but no different than America, if someone carries your bags, you tip. For the maids, massuese, etc. there are tip envelopes to take care of them at the end of the stay, massage, etc.

Hell, you even see it among the work force, so the folks who own these places aren't immune. Management and most of guest services look like they came straight from Madrid. Bartenders, security, and the bellhops are kind of a middle-caste. Maintenance, pool boys, housecleaning, and buffet workers are all Mayan. There is a TINY bit of crossover, but very very little.

Best excursions in the area?  BIL wants to be a resort bum.  I want to take my family out and see the Coba Ruins and swim in some Cenotes.

What are some of your favorite places to go?  Xplor looks fun, but something about it tells me not to go.  Same with Xcaret.

Tulum is worth a trip. Can do the ruins if you'd like, Akumal for snorkeling/sea turtle swimming on the way back.

Do some checking on Akumal activities before locking in. There's been some kind of weird labor/gov't battle going on there and some things are either restricted or banned to certain groups.

I've heard both good and bad about Xplor. Same with Xcaret. Xcaret seems to have more positive reviews, in my experience.

Honestly, besides Tulum (go very early - it gets hotter than Halle Berry there after about 9 a.m.), I'd suggest going to Playa and catching the ferry to Cozumel over all of the rest. You can rent vehicles - cars, Jeeps, scooters - and screw around at your own pace.

I always enjoy taking the kids to Xcaret for the day.  They love the whole swimming with the sting rays and dolphins stuff.   A little pricey but I find it very nice.   There's a area along the ocean where they have hammocks which is just so chill at dusk.  They built these pools next to the rock wall there so you can just hang out and the kids can play in those looking for little sea creatures while the waves are rolling in.

Is Xcaret the one that also does the dinner/night show? I've heard that was awesome.

they do a show, but i didn't do it.  my parents and kids did so i can't speak for the quality but i think the big problem is that show runs pretty late.  we did it the first year, but skipped it this year.   i'd say from the vibe i got, it wasn't worth it.

You mentioned you're going with a group, check these guys out: https://www.h2ohcruises.com/

Private yacht for 5 hours with snorkeling, open bar, nice lunch, then they cruise back toward the harbor, drop anchor in a shallow protected area where you can swim for a while, drink, sunbathe, etc. It was $1600 but we had 8 couples so it was cheaper than the typical snorkel cruises with 60+ strangers. This was the best thing we did.

Looking at a place to go for family (3 kids 11, 14, 15) for Xmas. We are RCI members, and are looking at Hacienda Tres Rios. Anyone ever been or heard of it?
Went there 2 years ago.    Maybe it was just the week we went but it seems catered more towards people looking for a really quiet vacation.  Its pretty small with almost no entertainment.  You're also not getting that part of cancun with the nice beach.

Just curious, what time of year did you go? We are looking at Dec 22-29, so we'd be there for Christmas Day, I wonder if that might affect the people there and the activities. Also my CPA-wife will be looking for a little bit of peace and quiet while she prepares herself for Busy Season! Ho

Were the activities in the Nature Park any good? I think my kids would like the snorkeling and kayaking.

Were the restaurants good? We'd be doing the all-inclusive.

TIA!

We went in June.    I'm just not sure what there would be for your kids to do compared to some other places that I've stayed.   There's really nothing going on at night other than a small show a few nights.   There's no teen club or hang out area for older kids.  They have a cenote which is neat for one kayak ride and you can kayak a little in the ocean but that's really only going to kill a few hours.    I'm not sure the actual nature park activities.  The beach is pretty weak considered where the hotel is located along the coast.  Unlike the hotel district, you're going to have the more typical Caribbean blue ocean with waves.  There's a lot of lemurs (kuwaitas) that I've literally seen steal a whole pizza that was right next to a guy by the pool and iguanas of various sizes which are neat.    I'd say the restaurants are pretty standard.   I'm not really a big fan of all-inclusive restaurants in general so I'm a poor judge but that seems what you get at most of those resorts..   I personally prefer a bigger resort b/c you're just going to have more options.    The buffets will be bigger, menus seem to be bigger and the variety of restaurants is greater.

I went to the Moon Palace the last 2 years during when you're going and I like that place a lot more.

Our kids' spring break this week falls during the week before Easter. FML, rates are about 30 to 50% more that week. Thanks Jesus!

Things could always be worse.  You could be in disney that week.   Now I love disney, but that's just a sea of humanity there during that time.

I love my kids. That's why I wouldn't take them to Disney that week.

Actually we found a better deal going to PV for spring break so doing that this year. Just highlighting the price difference in case anyone else is considering Mexico end of March. Puerto Vallarta is also pricier  that week but our deal is good enough for our purposes.

I posted this in the other thread...

The ruins are boring. Here are 4 awesome things to do in the area.

1. Tulum Bar Crawl - There is a 3 mile section of the beach here with some of the most funky, laid-back, awesome beach bars in the world. Choices range from bar-food and cheap beer to 5-star cuisine and $25 margaritas. Bonus - young and beautiful women walk up and down the beach topless.

2. Snorkeling in Yal Ku Lagoon. The last lagoon on the coast not turned into a mega-resort (its a state-park with minimal entry fee). Its a protected lagoon, so its always very calm and clear even on windy days. Reserve a palapa for an extra $20, its worth it.

3. Temple of Doom Cenote - Awesome swimming hole that will only cost you about $7 to get in and you'll likely have the whole pace to yourself. May seem a little sketchy paying some dude to walk into his backyard, but its really cool and a great photo-opp.

4. Fishing at Boca Pailla - Take a 7' travel rod and fish for monster jack cravelle in the surf or chase bonefish on the flats. Rent a guide if you must, or be adventurous and DIY.

PS - both Xplor and Xcaret looked awesome, but both are fairly expensive and are full day excursions.

@McGarnicle

Stayed there for my honeymoon about four years ago. It was pretty nice. I wasn't as good as the place I stayed down there more recently (Paradisus Playa del Carmen La Perla), but it was better than the Iberostar property that I stayed at on Mexico's West Coast.

The grounds of the property are gorgeous and the pool and beach were great. The rooms are comfortable and nice, but were a little dated. More from a style standpoint than in terms of wear and tear. But that was 4 years ago. I found the service very friendly.

The food, varied in quality quite a bit. The big breakfast buffet was good quality and a couple of the restaurants were very good. But a couple of them were also pretty mediocre.
The Valentin turned out to be a home run. We had a swim-up suite, so mornings consisted of breakfast at the buffet, back to the room to coat ourselves in sunscreen, then out to the patio to lay on our chaises and then float in the pool. Waiters were coming by constantly to keep our glasses full and bring food. Maid service was top notch, twice a day.

We also spent a couple days at the beach and the big main pool, renting those private thatched roof palapas. Again, great service and nice amenities all around. At the pool they did a lunch buffet of tacos, rice & beans; delicious.

We did four restaurants for dinner, French, Mexican, Italian and steak. All very good, with the French being on par with any top local place I'd pick for a special occasion. We decided to eat there twice even though it meant skipping the Japanese & Indian/Malaysian places. At the steak house we both had "Kobe" steaks which were excellent but not any better than the Costco ribeyes I grill at home. I was all excited to try Kobe for the first time, so that was a slight letdown.

One thing that surprised us was the caliber of some of the guests. I try not to be a snob by any means and it's not like we had altercations or anything crazy like that, but we were perplexed. The place was a major step up from the Barcelo where we spent the first half of our trip, both in quality and price, yet some of the clientele was downright trashy. We didn't let it affect our good time at all, it was just surprising.

Leaving Wed. morning.  Still not sure what we’re booking off site.  Maybe Isla Mujeres, definitely Xplor, maybe Akumal, definitely Coba.  I don’t want to go off too much, but there is a lot to see.  Either way we are excited.

Any my thoughts on Isla Mujeres vs. Cozumel?

both awesome.

isla mujeres with less US tourists (at least the time I went) than cozumel. much smaller too IIRC.

Assume Cancun proper (Hyatt Zava) is as safe as you can get?  Booking everything through travel agent (airport straight to hotel transfer to Hyatt)...never leaving the resort?

are you genuinely limiting yourself to cancun proper and that resort because you're concerned for your safety? if so, maybe just go to florida? they have beaches and warm water and you can still get mexican food.

it's all safe. and IMO, the water, resorts, sights, people, food, everything is better outside of Cancun.

You will probably not find isla all that interesting.  There's not just a ton to do there. You rent a golf cart and doot around and shop a bit. See some tourist trap type stuff and take some photos.

Also isla gets more rain.

Cozy still has some really good diving and snorkel options. Its also overrun with cruise Zombies.

No....we're going with a big group to an all inclusive.  Some are taking the "Travel Advisory" very literal....even though Cancun is way down the priority on the advisory.

ah- a group.

I prefer anywhere but cancun proper- lots of places that will have car/buses taking you straight from the airport to the resort... pretty much describes all of riviera maya... where you can then hide out in the resort without ever leaving. and the water and beach will be better.

I've stayed in the house that this picture was taken from (Casa del Sol). Loved snorkeling in the lagoon. Went in about three times a day while we were there.

it's been almost 15 years since going to cozumel.  thinking about akumal, playa, puerto morelos, and puerto aventuras.  for those of you who have done all inclusive, which ones included diving?

just leveraged my ritz carlton rewards credit card into a deal;

heading back to ritz cancun again (without vegan friends),  paying 438 per night for 2 nights for the club level, then used 2 free night certificates and 70,000 points for 2 more club level nights.  so, 4 nights, club level for about 896- pre tax.  we enjoyed our last stay and without those vegan folks bogging us down, we should have much more fun.

just about....it was brutal.  only so many lentils and beans one can have.

yeah.  i am happy for them.

live your life your way, but if we are going to be together for more than 2 days, there needs to be common ground.  i know i'll be wanting mexican seafood and carne asada.

we generally never travel with people, but this was a gift for friends who did us a huge favour.  meals were a nightmare.  they are eating salad and I am looking for short rib tacos, lobster, stone crabs, etc.  I shouldn't have cared, but I felt a bit uncomfortable eating real food as they were grazing on the lawn.

there are times i like traveling with others, and times i just want family trips.  yucatan is a great opportunity for fun with friends.  did you get the bonus vegan lectures with your meals?

damn... so it was intentional? and they find more? yikes.... I just started a thread about Tampa area, but wife would prefer to go back to Cozumel. your link is legit scary ####.

Its crazy Ive been researching vacations for weeks and FINALLY settled on Barcelo Maya Palace in July. Was about to book and was doing some final research and stumbled on that advisory. I think I'll just stick to the Bahamas. I dont want to worry about this. Its supposed to be my vacation.

If you're staying on the resort, you'll be fine in Riviera Maya.
