Anyone been to Edinburgh? (1 Viewer)

:blackdot: High on my list of places to visit.
why is that?
Two friends went there a few years ago and said the mix of historical and modern was outstanding. They're not as into pubs and such so I don't know how much late-night atmosphere they soaked in, but they liked the food and said it was very lively. I'm also a sucker for places that are well-portrayed on TV shows, and "Case Histories" (Brit mystery series set there with Jason Isaacs) makes it look very pretty and diverse. Finally, I dig that sort of climate.

NiceWe're not late night people but just love great walking cities that have life to them. The whole historic part is a great draw for me. We went to Ireland a couple of years ago and were just blown away by it. We were thinking of going to London for the third time and doing some day trips but I think this is better.

I had a great time in Edinburgh. Took the train from London and stayed for a few days at the Sheraton Grand near the Edinburgh train station. Hotel was great. City was interesting especially the castle. Locals were very friendly. Would love to go back.

I enjoyed it but was only there two days. Big history buff so I had a great time. Friendly people. Weather was fine; we were there late August/early September, right after the tattoo.

Don't miss the Scotch Whiskey Museum. Nice tour and a great shop with hundreds of different brands (with taste-testing). Hint: don't ask for Cutty--they'll want to throw you out.

An ex went to grad school at University of Edinburgh. She loved it, but said there is a big junkie population and subsequent petty theft/robbery issue. She had never lived in a city before so that was probably overblown. That's all I got.

So is August a great time to visit for all of the festivals or is it crazy crowded and probably better in September? Sounds like a good time to go but I hate it when everything is overcrowded, long waits at restaurants, etc.

I went during the tattoo. I didn't think it was too crowded. I don't remember it being like NYC but we had a good time while there. Even though you don't golf, a trip to St Andrews is well worth it. You just get this magical feeling while you are there. They also have a nice mini golf course which was cool.

Definitely want to check out the Tattoo if possible (that said, I went 20 years ago). Right outside Edinburgh Castle, very cool show, and the lone bagpiper playing their ancient song (whatever it was) from the top of the castle tower was one of the most moving things I've ever seen. Bar scene was lively, city is beautiful. We stayed at a honest-to-god castle in Falkirk, just outside of town and rode the train in. Amazing place.I went with a couple guys and we posed as veterinarians the whole weekend. Everything went well until one girl asked me what she should do about her parrot that had broken its leg. "Bake it at 350 for 30 minutes and serve it with glazed carrots and a chilled chardonnay" was not what she wanted to hear.

I lived near Edinburgh for years.Beautiful place. The city is much more vibrant during the festivals, Fringe, Comedy, Film etc.Try to find one that appeals to your tastes best and find like minded people at the same place. The weather is the suck, but the history is marvellous. The city is beautifully layed out, but it is relatively a small city with less than 500,000 people. You had to force me to go to Glasgow, but Edinburgh was a pleasure.I'm not sure if the tram works are still going on. That is quite an eyesore. The idiot local council wanted a tram service to go around the entire city, which was a great idea, but they got fleeced by the mob they contracted and it will end up being a airport to the city tram at best after years of ruined businesses, blocked streets and so much money flushed from taxpayers into the hands of corrupt businessmen.

So we're not talking Mardi Gras/Oktoberfest crowded. Is it dead in September?

I agree with most of what other people said above having lived in Scotland for about six months and having visited several times.

Edinburgh is a great place to visit. The tour of the Edinburgh Castle is very cool and has great views overlooking the city. It is fun to walk down the old cobblestone pathway of the Royal Mile leading down from Edinburgh Castle. I recall there being a bunch of scotch whiskey bars and scotch whiskey tours along the Royal Mile where you could try all kinds of different scotch. There are plenty of cool pubs in Edinburgh to check out.

If you have a chance, I would also recommend heading up to St. Andrews, which is about an hour north of Edinburgh. You can walk along parts of the golf course, which is pretty amazing especially along the coast of the North Sea. As someone else mentioned, they have a cool putt putt course that you can play right by the 18th hole. St. Andrews also has some great castle ruins that the town is basically built around. St. Andrews is essentially a small college town centered around the golf course, which makes it a fun place to walk around and pub hop.

I've had a great time in Glasgow as well, but haven't done as much touristy stuff there. If you can catch a Celtic soccer game at Celtic Park, it is an amazing experience. I saw a Champions League game there, and it was probably the best spectator sporting event experience of my life being a part of over 60,000 fans swaying together while singing Irish rebel songs. Just be prepared to have a little more difficulty understanding people in Glasgow than in Edinburgh due to their thick Glaswegian accents.

I would also recommend chatting with some of the Scottish locals if you get a chance. They are generally some of my favorite people in the world. They are generally pretty friendly, hilarious, and serious drinkers. I still have lots of great friends over there.

Edinburgh is a great place to visit and reasonably fun. Glasgow, however, is more of a party town with less interesting historical stuff.

Visit the castle - very cool. And as others have said, if you can go when the days are long. I went in November and while I had a blast it sucked when it got dark at like 4:30.

Looking like I may be going in July. Stuck in Glasgow for some of those days, but will hit up Edinburgh for 3 at the start. Any other recommendations on places to hit?
