Regardless of where San Fran finally finishes it's going to be a pick that will put this deal in the steal category. If it's not #2 it's going to still be top 10 at worse. I think BB/Pioli can live with that pick and Randy Moss for the #28 pick last year.
It's not going to be a steal if the player busts and chews up a lot of cap.
When is the last time the Patriots had a top pick bust?
Maroney
Nahhh. He's still got 3 years left on his contract, so he'll have plenty of chances to produce. But the Pats are 25-4 with Maroney as a RB, so its tough to say anyone on that team is a bust. But if you have several really nice cars in your garage, and you choose to keep some of them in the garage without driving them much, it doesnt mean the others arent nice cars. It just means some cars are more fun to drive than others.
Maroney is 38th in the NFL right now in rushing. He has almost nothing to do with the success of the Patriots this season.
This Patriots season is far from over. Im my eyes, the real season hasnt even started. And Ive been saying since the Dallas game when Sammy Morris went down, that NE was going to limit Maroney's role to keep him healthy for the playoffs. It doesnt matter to anyone but disspointed Maroney fantasy owners that he hasnt contributed much. The guy's playing RB on a team where the QB has 45 TD passes. His individual success is almost irrelevant to this point. Theyre still yet to lose.
If someone is a bust or not depends on how well they perform in the NFL, not how well the team around them does. I am not a Maroney owner, either, so I am not some frustrated guy #####ing about a player who has screwed me. Based on where he was picked, Maroney has been a bust. Yes, it is only his second season, but RBs almost always produce immediately, and despite being given many chances, Maroney just hasn't lived up to his draft status yet.

Guess its a bit early to call anyone a full out bust right now, but really, has Maroney done anything to make the Patriots a better team this year? I would assume they could have gotten something they needed more with players that where taken after him.

Is that hindsight limited to the Patriots? Keep it clean.
No, but no other poster asked when was their teams last first round bust?

I cant argue with you about Maroney's overall production being dissapointing. Thats a given. But we'd probably both agree that this has been a unique season for New England in a few ways. From the spygate situation, to the Moss, Welker and Stallworth acquistions leading to the nearly indefensible passing attack, to the pressure of being undefeated leading into the playoffs, to the other RB going down for the season. It all factors in to how NE has approached their use of Maroney. RBs need work to produce. Most need to get into a rythym just like a QB. Many backs, Willie Parker is an example, take alot of minimal runs before hitting a couple of big ones. Maroney imo is that type of back. He's not a grinder. He's more of a slasher that needs rushes to hit that occasional big play. So, as a highly drafted player and a fantasy player, I see his production as dissapointing. But again, bigger picture, he's playing a role and just doing what he's being asked to do. No way is he a bust in real football terms.

New England is 10th in the league in rushing attempts, so we cant blame the Pats passing all the time for his lack of production. Maybe, just maybe, he is not getting the work needed to be successful because he is not good enough to warrant getting the carries to do so.

As a team, theyre 10th. As a player, Maroney is 36th. He's had 126 carries. And Ive already acknowledged earlier in this thread that Maroney is probably the 5th or 6th best offensive skill player on this team. Moss, Stallworth and Watson were all 1st round picks. Obviously Brady is better. And Id have a hard time arguing Maroney is better than Welker, who was traded for multiple picks. There are many, many highly drafted players and highly skilled players besides Maroney to get the ball to. Maybe, just maybe, like Ive been saying for months, theyre saving the kid for the playoffs when the real season starts.

 So... the first time this year they decide they need to use him, and he goes 26/104/1 :P

 This is definitely much better for the Patriots. Now they don't really have to trade down and can draft a solid player (probably defense) that's more cap friendly. At the same time, it'll also be much, much easier to trade down now should they decide to do that.
