Anyone ever been to Austria before? (1 Viewer)

 Klimt museum was cool.

Couple of palaces converted to museums too.

Vienna was expensive when I was there. I liked it but it wasn't cheap.

Austria is great, wife and I want to move there someday. Vienna is a great city to live in, but for a vacation I think Budapest and Prague are better.  That said, Vienna is really clean but pricey. It's high end, thr the good stuff is very cultural (opera, symphonies, art). You have to get coffee (melange is what you want to order). Pastries and deserts are world class.

I really liked the small towns like Durnstein. The Abbey at Melk is amazing.

all very true based on my travels there.

Went with the Wife and her family about 4 years ago.  Really awesome place.  Public transportation is awesome there.  We saw Schonbrunn Palace and a few other "touristy" things.  They were fine, but I honestly just liked walking around.  We had a nice dinner at a vinyard just outside of the city.  Food and wine was awesome, but I can't remember the name to save my life...

Good post here. Just walking around, eating and drinking is the way to go in almost any European country. I know a lot of people like to go "schedule heavy" and "pack it all in". I am more on the opposite end. Just enjoy the city, wander around, eat and drink. It's a great place. Public transportation is clean and efficient and wonderful. Also, the music. I am a nut for classical music and it's beautiful to be surrounded by it and it's history.

My daughter went there last summer.  She says:

  • Schonbrunn palace/museum - make sure to visit the hedge maze in the gardens
  • Stefansdom cathedral - usually some gorgeous classical music group in there
  • Hotel Sacher - for the restaurant, as well as the architecture
Are you going to any other Austrian cities?

Salzburg is really pretty. The city is built around two cottage industries - The Sound of Music and Mozart - which makes it a little tedious if you're not into either. That said, I had a good time. I remember hooking up with some girl from Beloit College while I was there and having crazy monkey sex with her while I was there.

####, you know Kerstin? Why didn't you say!

Sacher is nice, good pastries and coffee but expensive and nothing too different than a bunch of other places.

Both my parents born in Austria.

I have lived there and went to first grade there - have also visited family 3-4 times. Brought my wife & 3 kids there about a year ago - had a blast

As others have said -Vienna is expensive. Beautiful city, really clean. Tons of museums and stuff to see

What time of year you going?

If you are a skiier, there are some good areas - Zauberberg is nearby, or if you go a bit further west you get into the glacier areas where the season is much longer. I am not a big fan of Vienna, but it is a beautiful city. Bratislava is very close and a cool place where you can still get a feeling for what it meant to be part of the Soviet Block for 40 years.

Possibly visiting Salzburg for a few days afterwards. I like anything cultural or historical. I'm looking to go next April or May.

No reason to make that a few days IMO.  I'm a nut for classical music but the real history of that is in Vienna. Salzburg is cool but I think it's a bit touristy with all the Mozart, Sound of Music stuff.

I've been to Linz as well. Pretty cool, birth place of the Fuhrer and all. It has some awesome Hitler themed tourist attractions. If you are into Adolf, it's a must. Provides a nice alternative to the schmaltz of Salzburg.
