anyone here into fishing? (3 Viewers)

I'm the opposite mostly high end rods with midrange reels.  However, its very technique specific flipping for bass all day I want the lightest, strongest combination of a heavy action rod.  All Loomis rods with a mix of reels.  My favorites are old school Shimano Castaic reels that I bought used off ebay cheap and upgraded to ceramic bearings.  Silky smooth...
I like high end rods now.For years and years you could hand me a Zebco and I would be good to go.Then I ordered a Grandts rod and that was all she wrote. Those things feel like they are an extension of you.I love them as long as I can afford them I will not own another.

I'm in the market for a new baitcaster.  Any recommendations?
Abu Garcia, Lews and Shimano are very popular brands.  My best baitcast reel right now is the Abu Garcia SX.  I really like it and notice a big difference compared to my other reels.

If you're look for good deals I suggest checking out http://www.ffo-tackle.com/ or http://stores.ebay.com/American-Legacy-Fishing-Co-LLC/Casting-Reels-/_i.html?_fsub=9578200018&_sid=340814088&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322   Both places have great deals and occasional discounts.

Sorry in advance f it's been posted somewhere in the 17 pages in this thread -

Anybody have any advice on traveling with a fishing pole?  We rented a bay house on Captiva Island Florida for June.  The house has a nice dock and apparently there's some decent fishing there.  When we were in Captiva last year, I rented a pole for the day and it cost me $20 or so.  This time, I want the rod for the whole week.  My options are:

1) Rent again, for the whole week (Can't imagine that being less than $50+, and the quality is likely questionable.)

2) Buy a cheap pole at Wal-Mart once we get there and then just throw it away/leave it when we leave

3) Buy a travel pole.

-Travel pole options welcome.  All I've seen are the Soulyugang and Pressio (SP? on both) collapsable poles on Amazon, or some option for mult-segment poles.  I'd love some thoughts if anyone has bought/used a travel pole before.

Thoughts?

I did this when I went pier fishing in Naples. Went to the local ACE Hardware and spent like $40 on a spinning rod and reel. Then maybe another $20 on some basic tackle. Worked fine.

Are you driving or flying there?

Are you driving or flying there?
Flying - I live in NJ.  Also traveling with wife and 2 small kids, so anything that would require an extra item to carry is basically impossible.  Anything I bring has to fit in my suitcase.

What are you fishing for?
Fish.  j/k...I have no idea.  Whatever lives in that bay.  From what I've seen (and caught last year in a totally different spot), some small bluefish, Sheepshead, looks like some folks catch red drum...I've never fished the bay side of Captiva.  Only the inlet up near South Seas Island Resort.  I'm guessing there could be some big stuff there, but since I'm limited to the shore from the dock, I wouldn't hold hope for huge fish.  I'm just catch-and-release, so whatever is fun.

I drive to Sanibel so I have the luxury of bringing my own gear but there is a good shop on Sanibel (Bait Box  or something like that) were you can buy bait and tackle.  I think last time I was there they were selling 2 piece poles all rigged and ready to go for $40-50.  I would think it would cheaper to buy one rather than shipping a rod tube on a plane.

Definitely some big snook caught in the causeway between the islands but it can get really crowded.  I prefer to sit on the beach with a cooler and' bait and wait'.  As long as the tides are decent I always end up with some nice fish.

I think I'd just buy a cheap combo at Walmart or some fishing outlet.  You can get all the gear you need for the week for $100.  When you're done maybe donate it to some place or give it to a kid.

I frequently travel with rods. Here's what I'd recommend on a shoestring budget...

  1. First, get a 4-piece 7' Travel Rod ($40 - this one is a spinning rod). It's faily heavy-duty, rated for 10-20lb line and will cast up to 1.5oz. I'd pair it with a 3000-4000 class reel w/ 15lb mono (or 20lb braid). You can cast lures/jigs/artificials/shrimp with this and it will handle any of your smaller fish.
  2. Second, get a 7' Hurricane Mako Telescopic Rod ($23). Pair it with a 5000-6000 rod w/ 20lb mono (or 30lb braid). Bomb it out there with 2-3oz of weight and a piece of fresh chunk bait or a live baitfish and wait. You wouldn't want to be casting this thing all day, but its sturdy enough to handle a mid-sized blacktip or whatever else might take your offering.
  3. Third, get a travel case ($26). This should hold both rods. I generally take a backpack as my carry-on when I fly, and this straps right to the side of it. Costs nothing extra and stores easily in the bins above.
Under $90 and now you're set for the next time.

Thanks @E-Z Glider.  Great info.  For $23, I couldn't NOT try the Mako Telescopic.  It's cheaper than the Sougalyilang sets, and I considered just bringing my current reels anyway, so I don't really need the reels with the sets.  Even if I decide to not pack it and bring it, at that price, I'll keep it as a car rod or something.

I looked at these heavily - reviews on Amazon were good - reviews on youtube were hit-or-miss.  A lot of folks described it as a "noodle on a stick" because it only flexed on the top section.  How have your experiences been?  What length is your pole?  :bag:

   If I were only buying/taking one rod, I'd go with the 4-piece rather than the Mako. The Mako casts like #### (pretty much all telescoping rods do), but its fine for bait and wait and has the backbone to handle a bigger fish. The 4-piece will be much better for casting (but not heavy enough for big fish). I always figure if Im taking the case anyway, I might as well bring a couple of options. I usually put 3-4 rods in mine.

Good luck and check back in and let us know how you make out!

OK.  Good to know - question re. the case you linked...what are the dimensions?  Diameter and length?  Also, is it a hard tube case or soft?  I'm hoping it'll fit in my checked bag.  If it does, I may just buy your exact combo.

Honestly, I don't fish with enough finesse to tell the difference.  Most of my "real" fishing is bottom fishing the reefs or trolling with much bigger tackle. All I use this one for is dicking around on the dock with the nieces and nephews. It has hauled up plenty of Mangrove Snappers and Redfish.

hard case, 27"... strap it to your carry-on if not... I have used both of these rods and can vouch for them, the case is just the first one I saw on Amazon, so no first hand experience with it.

I got the 4-piece rod from Amazon yesterday.  Really nice rod.  Feels not too far off from what I use for 95% of my fishing here in NJ.  A little stiffer, but really well made.  Guides seem sturdy.  Connections are tight.

The 7' Telescopic arrives today weather permitting.  Excited to see that one too.

I haven't pulled the trigger on the case yet.  The lengths so far BARELY fit flat in my checked bag, so I'm considering just getting a length of PVC and cutting it down to make a rod holder that will fit in my bag perfectly.  I want to see how long the rods are first.

Was able to get out fishing Friday afternoon and final caught my first bass of the year.  It was tiny but I was still happy.  I didn't fish long because it was windy and cold so I headed to the brewery shortly after.

My brother in law just headed to Washington for drill and is renting a cabin on a lake.  Looks gorgeous.  He talked to the owner and the guy is going to let him borrow some fishing gear.  I'm looking forward to hear how he does.

So Ive taken my Kayak out twice in the past 2 weeks...the first trip a week ago I didnt catch anything due to the fact that I was really focusing on launching, how to maneuver in the wind/current, anchoring, etc...being my first time on a kayak I was a little nervous, so I didnt really fish as much as I would have liked to, and I didnt wanna go too far form the launch.

Took it out yesterday to some flats on Tampa Bay...I caught a couple of Ladyfish but there were no Reds or Trout in the area...Im already feeling much more comfortable/confident and Im planning my 3rd (and hopefully most productive) trip so far a week from next Monday.

One things for sure, its an absolute BLAST fishing from it. I just need to get to areas that are holding fish. Both trips I was able to anchor near some mangroves in the shade and just enjoy the solitude for a while, have a snack, and feel like I was a million miles from civilization. Next week Im gonna be near Weedon Island preserve, which is probably the most popular spot in Tampa Bay for flats fishing. Lucky for me, Im able to fish weekdays so Ill avoid the crazy weekend crowd. Stay tuned for a good report (fingers crossed)

What kind of kayak did you get?  If you are fishing shallow water I suggest using a stake out pole to stay in place instead of a traditional anchor.

Emotion Stealth 11 Angler. Water depth varies from about a foot to 20 feet or so. I've added an anchor trolley and it makes anchoring way easier than I thought it would be. I may check out a pole at some point but for now anchoring is a breeze.

I use an anchor trolley and have a stake out pole.  I know this shows it's not available anymore but this stake pole what I bought last year and was really cheap.  I run through the ring on my anchor trolley.  I'll also recommend a fish gripper, not only for hanging on to fish but you can clip on to a branch or something and hold your kayak in place if there happens to be something around.  I was fishing a flooded valley that was deep but still had trees sticking out of the water in the middle.  It was too deep to use my anchor usefully so I just clipped on to one of the branches to hold in place.  Wind is such a pain on a kayak.

I actually have that exact gripper...fishing tackle/gear isnt something Im lacking in, although I still never think I have enough lol. I also take along a 40 or so foot length of paracord with carabiners on either end for tying off, tethering, or towing.

Ive been finding a ton of spots lately to launch and fish all over Tampa Bay...Ive got a list of about 6 spots/areas right now that Im dying to fish, my biggest problem right now is I can only get out about one day a week, and deciding if I wanna fish canal docks, grass flats, or mangroves. The struggle is real.

Time is always a big problem.  Deciding on locations is a great problem to have.  If I want to fish for big bass I have to drive to the Mississippi River, which isn't far, or over two hours to the good lakes.  Everything else around me is private or doesn't have big bass.  NE Iowa isn't really known for great bass fishing but it does have great trout streams.

My brother in law and I spend way too much on fishing gear, especially late winter when we're itching to get out from winter.  Tackle sales are always a killer for me.  I think I have 9 different rod and reel setups right now and bring 6 with me on the kayak.  I'm always interested in more but know I don't need it.

So the GF got me a fishing trip for my bday with a friend of mine who's a local inshore captain in Crystal River FL...we left the marina at 8am this morning and fished the flats, mangroves, and jetties in the area. The bite was nonexistent til about noon, then it really lit up. Over the next 2.5 hours we caught Redfish, Black Drum, a Jack Crevalle, a few Spanish Macks, a big Bonnethead Shark, and a crap ton of gator trout...it was awesome. Mostly overcast and between 68 and 75 degrees all day with some wind but overall a nice day on the water. We ended filling the box with our 3 man limit of trout (15 total, all between 17 and 21 inches), 2 Spanish mackerel (one biggun), and a nice Black Drum. All fish were caught on live shrimp on 1/2 oz jigheads. I couldn' have asked for a better time.

That Is one nice sea trout.Crystal river is my favorite. We go several times a year I use Don Chance as a guide he is great. We stay at MacRae's sometimes when we want to make a weekend out of it. MacRae's  is on the water where we put in. Nice atmosphere and plenty of drinking possibilities so if you do have a bad day fishing you can always catch a buzz.

Buddy and I went kayak fishing for smallies on a local (Central PA) creek Saturday. It was the first nice day of the year and the water was still pretty cold, so we had modest expectations. My buddy was using a 5.5' ultralight rod with 6lb test and was throwing a 1/16 jig with a twister. Now, this is a creek that I have fished hundreds of times in my life, so I know it pretty well. I knew there were some big fish in this creek, but its not like fishing up North where people are catching muskie on a regular basis. Around here, they are truly a "fish of 10,000 casts" and most guys consider it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to land one. I've only ever caught one (not in this creek) and my buddy had never landed a muskie before. Anyway, we're just floating along enjoying the day when he uttered those 8 magical words that are the start to every good fishing story.... "Hey, I think I've got something big here...."  He thought for sure he was going to lose it the entire time and the hook literally fell out of its mouth the second I grabbed it. What a start to the season!

I love stories like that.  It's one of the things that makes fishing so great.  I haven't been on my kayak yet this year and was going to Friday since it was suppose to be in the 50s.  It ended up being in the low 40's with 30 mph winds then it snowed the last two days.  I hate this Spring.  I think I had been out on my kayak about 5 times at this point last year.

Fished my first kayak bass fishing tourney Saturday and managed to finish 8th out or 39 people.  I was pretty happy with how I did and had such an awesome experience.  I can't wait to do it again.

Two Canada trips coming up in June. Conditions on Lake of the Woods should be peaking with late ice-out and warm weather lately. Then an island cabin on the Canadian side of Rainy Lake.

Super pumped having not fished since October. Two new spinning rods and reels to try. I find myself thinking about fishing all the time. Good luck to all you fishermen this year!

I'm jealous.  Hope everything goes well and the fishing is great.

My captain buddy up there is Marrio Castello (Tall Tales Charters). Im pretty sure he knows Don.

Stupid rain washed out my planned fishing trip today. After taking the kayak to a few different places and not having much luck other than a few small snapper, last week took it to Bishop Harbor and hooked into 3 Snook (only landed one of them). The first was on topwater at daybreak, it was a biggun, but it broke me off about 5 feet from my yak...looked around 30 inches. I landed the second one, it was pretty small, maybe 14 inches (didnt measure), and the 3rd one broke me off before I could see how big it was, but it made a few nice jumps a little ways away before he cut thru my leader. Tried to take a pic of the one I landed but the screen glare was bad and I missed the shot. Other than that I didnt see any other action, but I did see some Redfish and had a bonnethead shark, maybe 4 feet, swim right underneath me in about 3 feet of water. I threw a soft plastic in front of him but he wasnt interested. It never gets old seeing small sharks cruising the flats when the water is gin clear.

So, Bishop Harbor is the pace Im gonna stick with and learn the area...lots of mangroves, oyster bars, grass flats, and the mouth opens into Tampa Bay. Just a great fishy area. Was gonna go today but the damn rain just wont quit. Weve got almost 20 inches this month, which is the wettest May on record for Lakeland. Just ridiculous. Hopefully Ill be able to get out one day next week.

We'll be on LOTW the third week in June.

:hifive:

I actually have that exact gripper...fishing tackle/gear isnt something Im lacking in, although I still never think I have enough lol. I also take along a 40 or so foot length of paracord with carabiners on either end for tying off, tethering, or towing.

Ive been finding a ton of spots lately to launch and fish all over Tampa Bay...Ive got a list of about 6 spots/areas right now that Im dying to fish, my biggest problem right now is I can only get out about one day a week, and deciding if I wanna fish canal docks, grass flats, or mangroves. The struggle is real.

:fishy:
If you ever get the opportunity to kayak the Haulover canal you should definitely give it a try.So many different species of fish Black drum to Crevalle Jacks. Some huge yachts go through there so that might present a problem but they go through real slow the whole canal is a no wake zone because of the Manatees. It would be worth the drive probably about 3.5 hrs from you.Take the girlfriend you could go to Playlinda beach visit the space center make a weekend out of it.Oh and if you do make it there and visit Playlinda beach if you have delicate sensibilities don't go to far south on the beach lots of skin showing as in all skin lol.

Just noticed it says youre in Eustis under your avater. I pass through there every month while working, I service a Pizza Hut there on 441 that burned down a few months ago.

3.5 hours is pretty far to haul the yak when there are a plethora of places between Dunedin and Bradenton on the west coast, all about an hour drive...once I move to Brandon later this year Ill be within 30 minutes from most of those spots. I really want to fish on the east coast down around Stuart where you can catch Sailfish and Mahi a couple of miles from the beach where you can still see land. Next spring is probably when I wanna put together a trip. If anyone is interested, lets make it happen!

I am one week away from going here.

Been coming here for about 35 years. Same week every year. My son is actually the kid on one of the front slides holding that pike he caught at 4 years old.

Ten quiet days - can't wait.

On a side note, the same son has a fishing tournament up there every year for the family. We have about 30 family members meet us there every year. The tournament lasts 2 hours on a Thursday, and the only bait you can use are the lures that he and I make every year. So far we have made:

1. Small crankbait

2. Large Spinners

3. Spoons

4. Hand carved pike baits (this years creation)

It's a blast and yes, there is money and pride involved.   We finally got all the lures done yesterday for this year, so I will try and post a pic in the next few days.

I will probably never make it up there(because its North of Ocala)but it sure looks beautiful.Always wanted to catch some of those monsters that are in those lakes up there.I will have to live vicariously through you.Be sure to post pics.

Absolute newbie here. I didnt plan on fishing when we decided on a Florida trip this year, but rain and stuff dictated a new adventure. Fished a bit when i was a kid at a neighborhood pond, but never really got into it as an adult.

30 years later and my son is almost ten. We’re here with my in-laws in the center of Florida with not much going on. Its kinda nice. I got out to golf a couple times and beat the rain. Yesterday we decided to try fishing in the lake behind our little condo. Borrow some poles from the office and my dad had one in his garage that didnt sell at his last garage sale. So, its safe to say we arent using good equipment and i have no idea what I’m doing.

There is a dock behind the condo, and we just go out to the end and start casting. A couple hours in we havent had so much as a nibble. I go inside to eat a grilled cheese and pull up a couple youtube videos.  We go back out after lunch. Its raining off and on all day, some of it pretty hard. Had to stop a couple times because i saw a little lightning in the distance. Still, it was a lazy day and not much else to do so we are determined.

We are just using live worms for bait. I dont even know how far to have the cork up the line or how to tie a hook. I’m showing my son the little that i do know, but he keeps tangling up the line. My FIL, dad, and myself take turns getting that mess sorted out. Finally about 3pm or so, i see my cork go under and head the other way.  I hook my little fish and reel him in. Only using 6lb tess, so not expecting anything big. Its a little Crappie about 6 inches or so.  I didnt care, we were so excited to cattch something besides a little clam i had snagged earlier.  Cast again to same spot and almost immediately see the cork go under. Reel in another of the same size.

Had to stop for a rainfall and then my son and i went back out. I keep casting to the same spot, and finally get one on the line again.  I give the rod to my son so he can reel this one in ( should have done that the second time).  It was the smallest yet, but my son loved it.

Is this how it starts?  We really had a nice time and my son and FIL are back out there already this morning. So, we only have today and tomorrow left, but I’m thinking about picking up something a little better.

We do have access to a rowboat if we want to go out on the lake.  Saw some guys come back with some nice fish, but they knew what they were doing.

TL;DR. First time fishing  in about 30 years.  My son and i really enjoyed it. Thinking this is where addiction begins. Recommendations for inexpensive starter equipment or a good lure for lake fishing in Florida?

Headed down to my favorite place in the world, Jupiter Inlet tonight.  Hoping to get out before daylight in the AM, and if I'm feeling froggy maybe a 4:30 am start to try for some Muttons.  Hoping after daybreak to maybe score a blackfin or Mahi.  Will update Saturday!

That’s awesome! Well done. That’s how it begins. The look on your son’s face tells it all. Make sure to take a few pics. Action shots are fun too.

So here are the lures that my son and I made for the fishing tournament I talked about a few posts up.

We hand carved and painted every one of these. We started off with stock pieces of basswood. Basically this (the long version).

All the parts (basswood blanks, hooks, split rings, eyes, etc) we got from lurepartsonline.com. We started carving these back in January and just got them done for our fishing trip this next week.

Once we carved them, I sanded them with my orbital sander and then started painting. We used high gloss spray paint, and we would start with a base layer and then start layering on top of that. The scale patterns on some of them are courtesy of a piece of small hole netting that we would drape over the top and then spray over that. We also used vinyl lure paint to paint some of the other patterns or designs that you see.

My ten year old and I worked on these together most of the way through. I did a lot of the spray painting, and he did all the design work. He also did a fair amount of the carving as well. Once the painting was done I did 3-4 coats of marine type polyurethane over the top.

It was fun. Now we will see if they catch fish.

I also carved one for one of my brothers who turns 50 this year. See if you can figure out which one it is.

Jupiter FL

HIt the water about 7a Got $40 worth of pilchards from Matt in the inlet and headed offshore to a confused sea, but conditions were good at 2' or less. In 90' there was a pretty thick weedline with activity so I figured I'd at least give it a quick look dead out from the pier. A couple bonita and 1 blue runner later decided to head out to 120.  Dropped down a live pilchard on 5oz weight and within 10 minutes in ~130' up comes a 20" Mutton. Proceeded to make a number of drifts throughout the day from 100'to150' and it is clear the Mutton bite was best from 120 to 140.

Best advice I can give is if you are fishing the same water the commercial boats keep circling the Mutton are hanging below whatever they are catching (I only saw them pull in Bonita). Total keeper count was 3 Muttons (two on llve pilchard) at 20"19.5"18" and one keeper Yellowtail.  Caught at least 10 mutton total with at least 3-4 more over 17 but not 18". I also used frozen sardines and at that depth had no issues with junk fish that I could speak of, it was pretty much straight Muttons, unless a bonita happened to pick it up.  Water temp 79'.

I tried trolling in the afternoon and ventured out to 700' trolling a cedar plug but didn't really see much of anything that looked good. Drift current ranged from about 3.4 to 5.3 MPH. The 5+MPH current was almost directly in front of the pier in 120.  It was ripping there and made bottom drifting a lot of work.  Went up to 8oz but even with that it would only give you about 3 to 4 minutes before needing to real in and start again.  I did get my **** kicked three times on the bottom and it did not feel like a second bite (ie, easy then sharked). One in particular smoked me.  As always, will never know.  On the way back in I stopped in front of the green roofs.  Water was very dirty and I didn't see anything that looked like there was bait. Headed home after an 18 hour day to clean the boat.
