Hasn't been much Mitchell talk since the season ended, he wasn't even mentioned in the mini-camp reports. Which doesn't mean much either. His hamstring injury cost him most of last summer, but he wound up, later in the season, seeing time in nickel packages. I took that as a good sign. Even with being way behind, and missing most of TC, he wasn't buried, he got on the field. I'm not a big fan of Mitchell's either, but then again, raise your hand if you watched Ohio U two years ago. All anyone knew was that he was a reach, and he ran fast, so he was an Al Davis toy. Well, so was Tyvon Branch and Nnamdi Asomougha. I know very little about Mitchell, but I find it hard to believe that he is much better than Branch, who is an emerging star, IMO. But, if the Raiders decide that Branch can handle the deep middle (and he has the speed for it), there is an outside shot they might decide to get their best two safeties on the field. That's a longshot at best, and I think it more likely that it'll be Huff/Branch to start the season. If Mitchell played for almost any other team, I don't think he'd warrant consideration. But the fact that he has an outside shot at SS for OAK, you have to at least think about him. That position has been an IDP gold mine for years. Even saying that, there are usually starting DBs on the waiver wire, so why bother risking a roster spot for a backup S, behind a very good player? The only two scenarios that I think he is rosterable is in very deep leagues, with slim pickings at S, or in the case that I have him: We have expanded rosters during the offseason, and I own Branch. It's worth it for me to hang onto Mitchell and lock up the Raiders SS, and i can make a decision on the roster spot after training camp.
