Anyone successfully quit coffee? (1 Viewer)

Earlier this year I quit caffeine cold turkey and I was miserable. It completely wrecked my life for a solid week. This last month I started drinking a cup here and there, and this last week I had a cup of coffee every day. I haven't had caffeine for 2 days and clearly going through withdrawals again. I surprised how quickly my body became addicted to caffeine again.

I kicked soda pretty easy. I don't even want to think about coffee as I'm pretty damned foggy and get a headache by 9AM if I don't drink it. If I tried, I'd probably switch over to hot tea and then gradually switch from the more caffeniated to the less caffeniated.

I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to do that.
I asked myself the same question as I suffered through that first week. I was up to 5+ cups a day of coffee and even 10 minutes off of schedule would give me a headache. I never made it through the night without getting up to piss. Once I was regulated, I slept well and was no longer high strung. However, the cravings remain and here I am addicted again. Also, I just really enjoy coffee. I am considering the compromise of just a single cup in the morning and nothing more.

I quit 20 years ago when I developed an inner ear disorder and it was recommended I cut out caffeine. I get a little tired later in the morning and sometimes in the afternoon, but not sleepy-tired. It's all OK, if I've gotten a good night's sleep.

Why in the #### would someone give up drinking black coffee? I gave up putting #### in it in the name of weight loss.

These days, all I drink is black coffee and water. And beer. And wine. And whiskey. And scotch. And vodka. And tequila. And gin. And rum. And champagne.

I haven't had coffee in ten years. I don't miss it either.

I pretty much quit a little over a year ago. I think quitting has improved my mental health. I have had coffee a few times post-quitting when I really needed to stay awake for something.

Working 12 hour nights, caffeine is pretty mandatory.

A few years ago I had a week off work and decided to quit caffeine. What a terrible waste of a week off of work that was.

I didn't start drinking coffee until a few years ago, my early thirties. I got to the point where I was drinking a cup in the morning and one in the afternoon.

I gave it up a little over a month ago and haven't missed it.

I do love coffee and agree with the others asking why you want to give it up?

That being said, if you feel like maybe you are drinking too much, you can't quit cold turkey. You'll need to taper off slowly or you'll get the headaches from caffeine withdrawal.

You could also use hot tea as a replacement....less caffeine.

I tried once during one of those cleanse things. God what s miserable couple of days that was. Felt awful.

I started thinking about it recently though. I had a period recently when I gave up booze and sugar and after getting through the first week I felt like a new man, such clarity of thought and I felt my brain working in a new gear. I was sharper than I had been in a long time. I want to do that again and try to stick with it--it's just so hard to give up booze since it is my favorite thing in the world. But I also got to wondering what if I gave up coffee too and for perfectly pure. I wonder if there are added benefits.

I guess that's the question others are asking--what's the upside of giving up coffee?

Coffee is one of the healthier drinks, no reason to completely give it up. Except that it apparently increases the chances that you'll sire a son instead of a daughter (according to some research anyway) so I may be quitting in a few months (god help me).

I gave up caffeine and found lots of benefits. My energy level is more consistent throughout the day and I sleep better. I've recently gone back to having an occasional coffee mostly because I've been traveling some god awful hours for work and been out boozing at night. It is easy to fall back into drinking coffee again but overall I liked it better when I had no caffeine dependency.

Why not just cut out coffee after noon?

I don't really want consistent energy levels, I'd rather be roaring in the morning and chilled at night.

I drink 1 cup 3-4 times a week. Am I gonna become addicted?
I drink 6-8 cups a day during the work week. I don't drink coffee on weekends. Taking a week vacation soon and won't be drinking any coffee during that time.

To each his own, I'm not advocating that others stop drinking coffee. I'm just relaying the benefits I found from cutting out caffeine all together. I would rather not have a caffeine addiction and found life was better without it. However, I don't think it is a big deal to drink coffee and have started to have it here and there lately.

But I Do like baloney sandwiches :)

The downsides of drinking coffee are pretty minimal (as long as you aren't loading up on sugar and cream).
Not only that, but there are many documented health benefits of coffee.

Agree about the sugar, but a tablespoon or two of heavy cream is fine.

This is my habit as well. About 12 ounces of quality strong coffee first thing and I'm done for the day.

Downsides of caffeine: psychological dependency, stained teeth w/ coffee, dehydration, anxiety, diuretic, higher blood pressure and increased risk of heart issues, sleep cycle is disrupted and less likely to achieve deep sleep.

Pros: energy on demand, bowel movements, enjoyable and euphoric, increased memory, possibly reduces risk of liver cancer.

There's an argument for either side so for me it's a matter of preference to normalize my sleep patterns and reduce anxiety. A fair compromise is no longer binging on coffee during crazy weeks and just limiting to once each morning as some have suggested.

Ive drank maybe 10 cups of coffee in my life. Never liked it. Gave up caffeine back in 1995. Before that I drank tons of soda (mainly Mt Dew). Every once in a while Ill have a Dew or Coke (maybe 2 a month), but other than that Im completely caffeine free. When I quit, I never had withdrawals and it was easy as hell. Just do it.

I drank a few cups daily for about 10 years then cut back to a cup every week or two. Now I just drink it when I'm in the mood (usually while reading). If you slowly taper off over a month or so it's not that hard to quit. Keep a close watch on your caffiene consumption and slowly cut back. Also drink a buttlord of water. I was drinking 100-110 ounces of water daily.

I don't need you to tell me how ####### good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping she buys ####. I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it. But you know what's on my mind right now? It AIN'T the coffee in my kitchen, it's the dead in my garage.

This morning it's French Truck, dark New Orleans roasted, iced. - Eta for Otis, in a pint glass, at home.

Nothing funnier to me than seeing grown men on their morning commute drinking their precious iced coffee out of a straw. Why not put a pink umbrella in it, maybe hold it in a doily?

I love the smell and taste of coffee but caffeine completely wrecks my digestive system. I have a cup every few years and have had probably a total of 25 cups in my life so I have no advice for anyone that wants to quit.

Nespresso single shots will change your life. One soon after waking, then one right before heading to work.

YEAH I'VE GOT YOUR ####### TPS REPORTS RIGHT HERE

You're the old fat guy with the personalized sneakers, right?

since we're all here talking about how much we like coffee, anybody have a favorite coffee they buy online (amazon etc). i'm not a huge fan of any of the stuff offered in the grocery stores. i've bought this before and it was solid.

in before Jack White recommends bulletproof coffee.
